Operation Delta 29
We now begin a new thread on subjects such as building, modding, overclocking and such. I thought we might close it down but as there is interest in the above subjects, we shall see where it goes. Those of you wanting to build can do so here. It seems as though this has bome a virtual workbench for projects large and small. If you have questions, comments, or whatever they are welcome here. From newbie to expert, we all learn regardless of which level we are at at any particular time. So - welcome to Operation Delta 29. (Dedicated to Excellence and Long Term Acheivement)

greenegoose, can you explain to me what Overclocking is exactly. I read about it all the time. Thanks....

Please remember to let us know if it worked or not...JJ

Dodge
Ain't goose, but here goes.
Overclocking is adjusting various settings to make the cpu [ sometimes the motherboard] run faster than the factory setting. In other words you have a Intel 866 and overclock it to make it run at 904MHZ. Hope this helps. By the way you can underclock also. Say your mobo/cpu is unstable you can underclock to stablize them. A lot of computer manufactors have been known to do this.

Hi Dodge, This comes from a favorites of mine.
Overclocking refers to the process of running a processor at a higher speed than it is marked. In other words, because processors are "overdesigned", they can run at a higher speed than their rated MHz. Thus, it is possible to operate a Celeron 300a CPU at 450MHz, a Pentium II 266MHz at 350MHz, an Athlon 700MHz at 800MHz, etc., and many CPU's can be overclocked by simply altering motherboard jumper or BIOS Setup settings
Dodge, sometimes you can find a processer that is higher rated than what it says on the box, then you're really in luck.

It would appear that the DELTA threads, like a black hole, have drawn me in. I require the input from you builders of infernal machines. Mine is starting to show some ominous signs so I want another. Not quite ready to build, but lets say I am wanting to spend no more than $1000 US for a whole new system. I already have the following:
30GB 7200rpm WD HDD
speakers
printer
32MB stick pc100 RAM
mouse
Here's the catch...I want a 1ghz, fully upgradable mid-tower and a 17 inch monitor. The real kicker is I have NO operating system to install. I have fading hopes to get win98, but will accept winME. Can this be done without using junky stuff. It doesn't have to be top-of-the-line either. What do you guys think? Can it be done or do I have champaigne tastes on a beer budget? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
PS: Dumb it down guys...I don't know hardware too well and I just started my third beer. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Hi maxx, yes I believe it can be done and yes you can bring one in for less that a $1000. You have a good start. Maybe An Inwin S500 ATX case/300w ps ($47.00), a Abit 133 Raid mobo etc. Bistro and Train will add some I'm sure. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Dodge, Try this.

maxx: Suggested laundry list: (Intel-based; someone else can advise on an Athlon-based system)--
InWin S500 mid-tower case
PIII 1 ghz CPU (Jury is still out on P4's)
128 PC-133 RAM
Abit BX-133 board (BX Chipset) OR (for a little more) the Abit SA6R (Intel 850 chipset)
Any of the Soundblaster Live! sound cards
A GeForce 2 MX or GTS vid card
For the BX board; get an ISA modem--
PCI controller-less modem for the SA6R
I'm partial to Sony monitors--but recommend looking around at a computer fair; can pick up a 17" pretty cheap--the monitor is where you will spend the bulk of your budget--try for quality if you have enough left over.

greengoose1,
That motherboard that you posted. Is that for an AMD or Intel? Also can you get a motherboard with the processor, heatsink, fan, etc. already installed? Looking to make this as easy as possible.

Greengoose posted for intel as does bistro.
I am the one running AMD.

Bistro and train,
Thanks for lists. I posted in win98 awhile back for a place to get win98 full install. I do have a disk from MS for the second edition updates. They charged me about $24.00 for it. You guys know where 98 is still available. I really don't want to go to the on-line auctions. Just can't bring myself to trust them.
