When away from home :-
VNC and PuTTY
and when at home
CYGWIN, which give you so much good stuff :- VIM, WGET, FTP, TELNET and SSH (servers and clients)
One of my very favorite programs is called Atmosphere Deluxe. I really can't live without it now. It generates all types of ambient soundscapes to listen to while you are chilling out or record to CD to listen to later. I tried many other sound generators and always come back to this.
http://www.relaxingsoftware.com
Another of my can't live without is a program called circle virtual CD. It's freeware and works as well as any of the pay virtual CD programs. It's an absolute must if you have a rubbish battery for your laptop like I have, no more power drain when I want to listen to some music or play a game!

Great stuff!
At work we have Symantec Anti Virus Corporate Edition. I love this program! I can see if everyone in the company has a virus or not, I can update everyone! Before we got this I had to go around to 9 differant buildings (250 computers) constantly to do updates!
that's it whitphil...you da man!!!
Thanks
Glad to have helped.
And I'll add a neat one that was pointed out to me.
TreePad Lite for Windows

I may have mentioned this before, if not I just found out they have an XP version.
Whisper 32 Version 1.15
Check the website, I believe it works for all versions of Windows, but Version 1.15 was only tested with XP.
It's a website/userid/password program great for remembering all that stuff you usually forget.
Glad this is still going...I think I posted last about a year ago.... ;)
Oh yeah, almost forgot, it's freeware.
Just a quick Question, especially for those of us with an always open connection to the internet (like cable modem). How secure can that be in a situation like this? Seems like hackers could get into your passwords and get your info. I do forget some of my passwords and would be great if was truely secure.
Hi!
>>It's a website/userid/password program great for remembering all that stuff you usually forget.
>...for those of us with an always open connection to the internet ... How secure can that be ...
My personal view is that this type of programme creates the weakest link in your chain of security. It becomes analogous to a "single point of failure". Of course with a decent firewall and properly configured computer it should not be a problem but all the same...
I also prefer to type in usernames and passwords manually all the time anyway, simply as it ensures they are committed to memory and I don't need to worry about not remembering them and thus being locked out of my accounts if I format my harddrive or have some other hardware disaster.
Best wishes,
Andrew
Hey guys, just thought I'd add another couple programs I've come across recently that are great.
1st is Mozzlia Firebird, which you can get from here. It's a browser developed by Mozzila (who originally helped develop Netscape). It's faster than I've found either Netscape or IE to be and it has a built-in pop-up killer.
Next is GordianKnot which is a great program that combines a lot of other programs to rip dvds and encode them with DivX and other Codecs. It works wonderfully and cuts out a lot of the work, since it opens each seperate program itself. You can get it (along with a guide on how to use it) here .
DAMN.......................HOW LONG IS THIS POST GONNA GO?????????????
After trying mozilla ,opera and a handful of other browsers I always go back to IE6 untill now, I have my Default browser set to, SlimBrowser, by FlashPeak. Give it a try I personally like it , no its not faster than IE6 since it is based on IE6, but the extra features are nice and it is a tabbed browser if you want that option,.
The folks on there forum have answered suggestions I have made and they add options regularly . give it a try it is only 1/4 the size of IE6 and has many more features.
SlimBrowser
this is still a great topic post hope it goes on forever since new products are always a click away, this may go into the Guinness book of records for the longest post reply wise and staying power wise, Virtual Dr rocks ;)
I think this post is no doubt very popular guys! :D
And the list goes on and on...
Is someone keeping track of all these suggested programs? I think it would be cool to have some database or list of these programs.
I dunno luke. hows about you go through all 23 pages and pull out all the links and create a database for it so we can all have our own access rights and privledges too it and add things to it on a daily basis :D:D
True Launch Bar Looks Cool, Haven't tried it yet. I like the popup menus from the quick launch buttons! Very Sheik!! :D
I love this thread, since reading it, I've downloaded about another dozen proggies to try.
I didn't remember seeing these.
How about:
Atom Time for syncing your clock "Atomically"
Also, I call it "Icon Lock", but I couldn't find a link. Here's the directions: Lock Desktop Icons
Courtesy of Jorge Walker posted on Axcel's Windows tips site.
"In Windows 95/98/ME you can lock down the position of the Desktop icons, using a couple of files from the MS Windows NT 4.0 Resource Kit. Place Layout.dll in C:\Windows\System and then double-click on Layout.reg. From now on, whenever you right-click on the "Recycle Bin" or "My Computer" icons, you can see a new option: "Save [or Restore] Desktop Icon Layout".
And:
Image Resizer for reducing the size of 1 to many Pictures.
Great tool for reducing lots of pictures to upload to a website or send as email attachments.
AND:
BootVis for improving Boot performance (I like this one!)
Keep it up! :D
I know that there are probably a thousand of this type of program out there but one I have used since my alarm clock broke is located here .
It's simply called Alarm Clock 1.0 and it has a different alarm sound for every day of the week, or you can use your own sound or song.
It's gotten me up every day since I've been using it.
MP Tech:
I have Lock Desktop Icons program downloaded to my work folder and if you, or others want or need it, PM me with your address and I'll gladly email it to you. It is only about 14KBs. I have never used it!!
buf, thanks for the offer, but I've got it loaded and backed up in so many locations, I'll never lose it.
After the wife, kids, in-laws, nieces, nephews, parents, etc, etc have re-arranged & accidentally sorted my desktop icons so many times (sorry, I'm just anal about where they should be), the Icon Lock makes me happy! :D
I load it on every computer I build / touch!
Try it, you'll like it!
Have just scanned through this entire thread and didn't see what I need. I have a laptop the takes 2 minutes to boot to the desktop running XP Pro. When I was running XP home, it booted up in 45 seconds or so.
I have tried several tweak programs but none have done any good. Is there a tweak program out there that really works?? If so please pass it along.
Thanks, mac
Have tried to read all posts. May have missed these
System Security Suite
Nice cleaner for cleaning cookies, temp. files., autocomplete, most recent documents etc.

RegSupreme 1.1
Registry Cleaner from author of JV16 Power Tools. Very fast. Three choices for depth of cleaning. 30 day free trial. $12.00 to buy. Have read if you uninstall trial version and then try to reinstall another trial version you can run into computer problems.

SpywareGuard
Nice complimentary antispyware software to SpywareBlaster.
http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareguard.html
Ridgerunr is actually the one who gave me the link for this program in another thread, but I used it to copy everything from my old hard drive to a new one I had purchased (operating system, files, registry entries, everything) without having to spend $30 or more to purchase a program to do it.
The program can also do a lot of other things as well. It's basically a hard drive setup tool made by Maxtor called MaxBlast III.
WOW, A guy could sit here for days checking out all the links in this thread.
Now we need some kind of free app that will pick out all the links in this thread and let us paste them into another document. I know it can be done one at a time, is there anyway to do it all at once?
I have to go to work today, the Boss called and said I have used up all my off time reading and clicking in this thread. He said something it being a New Year and I need to get my butt into work.
Hi gmcbreadtrk,
Try going just past the last thread and select "Printable version" then when that page opens, select "Show all threads on same page" from the upper right side of the page..........
Hope this helps...........
I am currently trying Clipmate but have just read about 'Yankee Clipper' in this post. I would be grateful if anyone can advise if this one is better than Clipmate and is it OK regarding spyware etc considering it is a free program?Quote:

Hopefully someone will be able to help as I would like a clip type program but am not sure which one is the best. I have only found clipmate recently therefore have not used all the tools yet and am still researching to see which is the best to install and use all of the time. Thanks in advance.
RegistryProt (DiamondCS) alerts you to any changes to the registry keys. Very useful if anything tries to write to the registry when you know you are not installing anything as it could be a trojan. RegProt

Do you have a dynamic IP and wish you had a static one? Try http://www.no-ip.com/. This is great if you want to setup a web server with an ISP that only offers a dynamic IP. Or use it for apps like pcAnywhere, VNC, etc. It works great! It allows you to have a static like IP and not have to worry about your dynamic IP changing. It has a free version and other versions with more advanced features.
Enjoy,
Jody Wood
