I think GParted would be easier for you. You didn't say which version of UBCD, but GParted has been on there for a while.
All you need to do is delete all partitions on the drive. Then you can allow Windows7 to create a new partition during setup. It's like having a drive fresh out of the box.

i'm not sure i can follow all they're talking about. can't i just format the drive in dos?
Not really. You're not trying to format the drive, plus you'd need to use NTFS.
Look at Task 3: Delete partition on the link I posted earlier. All you do is select the partitions on the drive, and then delete them. Reboot the system with the Win7 DVD and try the install again.

sorry, i can't find gparted on myUBCD. i see a "parted magic" and other stuff. it's certainly not on the main menu. i've searched a few of the other menus but can't find it anywhere.
running parted magic now but it looks nothing like the gparted webpage.
please understand i've never done this before and am pretty much lost as to how to find the software you're suggesting i use.

i will have to install xp mode on this machine too. we have need from time to time to print piggyback labels which is done on this machine. i may or may not be back with vmxp questions.
i hope "not be back" is the operative phrase.

the reason for it on this machine is that we need to print piggy-back labels - available only with sprocket holes on the side for old dot matrix printers.
on windows 7 on this machine i have a hp laserjet p2035 installed as default (same as the first machine). i also have an epson lx-300 installed. windows 7 can see both printers and can print to both.
the laserjet is not marked shared. the dot matrix IS.
when i launch the xmsp, on the USB drop down menu, i can see the laserjet but not the dot matrix. integration features are enabled.
more importantly, xp cannot see anything on the network.
i changed tcp/ip properties ip address to:
10.1.10.200
255.255.255.0
10.1.10.1
(the host 7 has 10.1.10.116 ... etc)
but still can't see the network.
what did i miss?
found it.
under tools in the xp there is a networking setting. it was set to shared networking (nat). changed it to broadcom ..
network is visible to vmxp.
now to work on the lpt1 printer.

was looking in the 7 network windows. 7 can see the xpvm but can't connect to it. xpvm still can't see any network connections.
when i do launch the xpvm, it says "network cable is unplugged" ??
mmm... xpvm can see everything under "workgroup" but not "network". going to use that to try to install the lpt1 printer in xpvm
