Belarc (freeware) -- I've just discovered this program and it is great.
Great for referring to when you format and re-install.
Like I'm doin' now.
Linda's note regarding software which messes too much with other things, is a good idea. Maybe a new thread???????????

And perhaps Winamp was already listed by someone (seems like I remember it in here somewhere), but along with Winamp, my favorite plug-in is Geiss which is at version 4.23 right now. It has some amazing visual effects (the best I've seen of any Winamp visual plug-ins and I've gone through a ton of them).Quote:

The author Ryan Geiss makes some excellent plug-ins. He's recently made another good one called MilkDrop which is great also, but I still like Geiss a little better.
Anyway, if you really want some cool visual plug-ins for Winamp check those two out. I also like the ones by Wild Tangent with the characters that dance to the music. They're just so cool.
By the way Moonrover, I always thought the saying was:
Winamp...
It really licks the parana's bass.
Thanks MAHMUD603 for suggesting Mailwasher. Works fine except---My only problem with the program is that some of the incoming mail will go into Mailwasher while some will go into OE. Been happening all week. How can I get all the mail to go into Mailwasher?
Thanks

Only have mailwasher open on toolbar anytime you have OE open mail will go there first even if mailwasher is open, 90 % of the time I only have mailwasher running and sometimes while i am reading my mail with OE open incomming mail will go directly to OE , so only leave mailwaher running, and OE when you are reading or sending mail ,(close OE after that.)If you leave OE open the mail will go there and bypass mailwasher..
Untick the check for messages in th options menu of OE to stop it downloading automatically.
There is another circumstance, which accounts for this even when you have unchecked the d/l messages on O/E.
Let's say that I only have MailWasher open (O/E has not been opened on my desktop), and I click on the check messages button. After I have determined which messages that I want to d/l and which I want to delete or blacklist, I then click "Process Messages". This command opens O/E and starts d/l the messages from the email server.
However, if your email server receives a messages during this "Process Messages" process, then it will also be downloaded. I have had this occur several times and I don't know anyway to prevent this. After all, how would MailWasher know which messages you have OKed for d/l and which you have not.
Typically, only one or two messages get d/l this way, if you are only d/l 8 - 15 messages. Obviously, if you are downloading hundreds of messages over a dial-up, then there could be more.
I am going to send a message to the MailWasher Support team to see if there is a fix for this problem.
Cheers,
Linda

I've been lurking in this thread for a while without replying - you've given some great suggestions here guys
My faves are:
System Maintenance:
SiSoft Sandra
Aida32
Belarc
JV16 Power Tools
Spybot S & D
Memtest86
If anyone has an Intel chipset this is a must - it really makes a huge performance improvement:
Intel Application Accelerator
This is a nice freeware bootloader for anyone interested in multibooting:
XOSL
The best Java Virtual Machine:
Sun JVM
For Windows XP users:
MS Powertoys for XP
I also love Partition Magic, but for people who can't afford it here's an excellent freeware partition manager:
Ranish
For anyone using the NTFS file system:
NTFSDOS
(unfortunately, this freeware version only allows reading of files - the expensive paid for version is required if you need to do more than that).
And last, but definitely not least, I'd like to give Nero Burning Rom a big plug. I bought version 5.0 back in late 2000 (and it wasn't expensive - about £30 I think), and since then it's been upgraded 7 or 8 times. They've made every single upgrade available free from their website, where other companies charge an arm and a leg for a point release that's little more than a bug fix. I call that outstanding customer service, and I think they should be applauded. Not only that, but it's the best burning software there is anyway. It's available as a 30 day demo:
Nero Burning Rom
Have to agree on Nero one of the better written applications these days.
As to mailwasher I find it needs more work by the designers i.e. the mail time out can`t be turned off so half way through writing to a forum you find an error message on the screen has erased all my hard work [no touch typist here more like a two finger typist!] and it keeps trying to add mail to its bounce list from my requested weekly updates, most annoying.
And, of course, I forgot the most important program of all - the one that's saved my life on more than one occasion - Norton Ghost. I tried Drive Image, as a sort of belt & braces approach, but I had real problems with it. Ghost, on the other hand, has never let me down once since 1998, when I first started using it.

This is the longest thread to date I believe. 144 That is for this forum. :D
INCREDIMAIL - couldn't/wouldn't be without it. It's such a pleasure to do all my daily emails with this programme.

Anyway, I'm not worried about breaking any records or anything really. It's nice to see such a great response to this thread, and I really hope people will get a lot of great info from it.
This thread has been in the vdr newsletter for the last 2 weeks.
Did you get yours?
And Yes, I think folks are getting stuff they need.
