Hi Jaak, "coercing", I'm devastated that you would think such a thing. I drafted you as I recall. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ We have learned from you also. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

It's where I spoke my first words in Arizonese.
Jeesh, first time I went on holidays in East Anglia (around 1977) I still had the "twaang".
All these years have passed, and I still haven't mastered English.
Haven't mastered much of anything, really.
YES, It's caused by my Flemishness!

Believe me, you've mastered it better than some Americans I know... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Jaak, I forgot you speak more than one language in addition to everything else you can do. And English isn't your first one. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

My computer has been running fine for a long time. I have a Microstar K7 with an Athlon 700 processor. When I turn on my system, nothing comes up on the monitor while my computer hangs with the busy light on until I just have to shut it down again. I was thinking maybe it was the hard drive but when I unplugged that, I got the same problem so I'm thinking its the motherboard or the bios. Any suggestions on what I should do? The mobo and processor are only a year old and I can't even boot from a floppy so I can't even get into my system at all. Maybe it is the temperature in the computer as I know the Athlons are big workhorses and heat up fast and I did used to keep my computer on for 9-10 hours straight everyday but it was powered off for a while and then I tried turning it on and I'm having this problem now that I have no idea what is going on. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

Welcome to VirDr Pratik97. First, please start a new thread on your problem. You do that by clicking on "Post New Topic" and enter your user name, password, and then a title such as "Computer Won't Start" and give your symptoms.
Now while your doing that do you see anything on the monitor after you turn power on, specifically up at the top of the page? Post that also.

So let me get all this straight; you're supposed to open up your computer and go in and dust it out? YUCK! Also, when you guys talk about front intake fans, do you mean those giant things that fit into a 5.25" bay?
-
Hi,
I'm surprised to see this thread come up again.
those things that are mounted in front of 5 1/4" bays are generally called hard drive coolers, because they are meant to cool the drive in that bay.
and yuck!?
yes, when the PC has been in service for a while you can find a lot of dust build-up in the case.
When it's being used in a bedroom that time is much MUCH shorter, same goes when it stands on the floor, or where dogs and cats live...as has been mentioned.
One can be really surprised by the quantity of dirt found in there.
so, since eyeballing can do little harm, I'd suggest one at least takes a look.
(and repeats it every few months.)

For those of you who scroll all the way to here- when you have time, thoroughly clean your PC- take out the floppy drive sometime after one year, and check the dustbunnies- wow- same for around all drives! Then, if you have a slot type processor- unclip it carefully, it takes some coordination- gently wiggle it loose, get it out of the machine (being careful of static before all this, during, etc) and shine a good light down through the finsI could hardly see anything after a year in my Athlon 700 mhz- took a lot of air to get it all out. All the times before when I cleaned house, I didnt do the drives and processor- but I sure will more often... performance booster and a half with hotter chips/ busy rooms, etc. "Dust is normal in computers" I read somewhere online- so now I dont feel like a real idiot. Then, there was the machine I worked on for a friend at his stone company- thick fine stone dust all through the machine- burnt his processor- had to loan him my spare machine and put his hard drive in that, reconfigure all the hardware in Windows, enough to save his accounting data and let the tally girl use software to figure prices on pallets of stone bought and sold- while I was there on two days, she had to do all that with a desk calculator and pencils, all this in a room reaching 90 degrees in afternoon! No, the owner doesnt know anything about computers, matter of fact, when Windows started adding wrong and misspelling simple words in the POST screens, he thought it was the girl's fault and that she had downloaded a virus! That and not being able to save info was the first symptoms, then they let that go for a few more days, until they had no bootup- took me awhile (and a few posts to VrDr) to learn enough about bad processors, ordered one (those Cyrix 266's cant take it) and got them going with their hard drive in my backup. Guess Ill be cleaning that in my spare time later this week... at least its a socket type, very easy to work in. New chip should get things back for them, but for how long- they had this used computer in that room for only two months, and we had a week of over 90 degree weather; more to come, too. He cant afford newer machine, can see his point, just go on ebay and buy all the Cyrixes for $2.00 each and call me!!

Can someone post info on how to measure the size of the fan ie, 80mmx120mm how can i convert this?
-
here is an easy solution.....there are 10mm in each cm..or centimeter......and 2.54 centimeters in an inch...so 80mm is roughly 3 inches......and 120mm is roughly 4.5 inches...

Have to say I am surprised to find metric measurements in here. How wide spread is it in USA?

I know I'm late, but...
Don't block the vent on the side of the case!
You'd think it's letting precious cooling air out, but don't count on it.
Mine is acting as an additional intake.
It's the Bernoulli effect. The faster the air, the lower the pressure.
My intake fan is just in front of the vent, and the fast moving, low pressure air sucks additional air in through the vent, like an airbrush.
Check your vent and see if it's sucking or blowing.
On another note:
James Watt invented the stationary steam engine.
Richard Trevithick invented the steam locomotive.
