"Delta" and Stuff (Maintenence & Backups)

Hey realize I am a bit late here, but here goes:

Zone Alarm 4.0 146 as my firewall, best I've used and is really easy to use and control

SB Search and Destroy + Adware 6.181 at least 4 times weekly to keep me nice and clean

Grisoft AV runs + updates automatically, catches email virus's and d/n's autochecked

Defrag about every 3 months

Thats about it for maintenance, although I have noticed a strange effect. One would logically think that the more 'junk' you clean out the more efficeient the pc would run. Apparently not.

If I use SB, Adaware, ZA Cache Cleaner, IOIO System Mechanic, all within close time proximity, my pc actually tends to slow down and get a bit 'rusty'. So now I just stick with SB and Adaware, which cleans out most stuff anyway, and my AV keeps me viral clean.

Oh, one last point, I do have Kazaa-lite on my pc, but lucky me, no infections yet!

As for backups... well all my important stuff is burnt onto CD, otherstuff is 'at risk'. Just laziness really.

[edit] I also went to Black Viperspage and disabled any unused services, although I have not noticed a system performance increase, it must've done some good as it certainly aint done no bad!

Good point. I've noticed over the years with tweaking programs that you often reach the point of diminishing returns and can even decrease performance if you have too many running (read: "conflicting"). Best to find one or two compatible ones and stick with them.
Gotta watch those scheduled programs. I do...very carefully: I turned them off. Just got into the habit of running them manually every few days.

Hi gizandpop, Thanks for your input on what you do. I will have to agree with Bistro that you can overdo it. Believe it or not if and when you try to do to many things at once your computer will act up. I may download more than a program a day, but only install one in a days time. One other thing - overload the ram and you can have some interesting things happen up to and including windows freeze/a full crash. No fun - No Joy.

Now for your question on what is going to happen with the Delta Threads. With the inputs and reactions from all that have viewed and/or posted we will in all probabability continue. As long as there is a need. We have a ways to go in the present thread - how tos and creating a generic model for all to reference. It will be the best all of us together can come up with. Then thare has been some thought of going to hard drives again and catch up on them. We would want to get in depth on them so the following thread will be more understandable. And that thread will be on Multibooting. From the simple multiboots to the complex. This will be another biggy and will require seatbelts I'm sure. :D D

Soooo, that is the tentative plan. Got better ideas or thoughts, please post them. We can use all the help we can get. Most all the original Delta Crew is present and accounted for and I want to wish all of you a big heartfelt thanks. All of us, each and everyone who has posted helps to make this the best it can be. So to all, keep it up, we are doin' good. :) :)

By the time I read all of them I will be old and grey and we will flying around in spaceships!

In regards to my comment on running too much...I think I mis-explained it. I meant that I am not neccesaryily running all these at once (i rarely run more then 1 of these at the smae time). Even if I run one after the other, or even one each day in consecutive days I will still xperience a slow down or crash.

So is it possible to 'overclean'?

Nevertheless, it isnt a major problem. Just one od those wondeful Microsoft Mysteries. I bet someone could write a book or two on those!

A Thread on HDD will be very intersting, and very knowledgeable as well i think. As for Multibooting, I cant wait for that coz there are a ot of ppl out there that have heard of it and want to try it, but just keep putting it off for the simple rreason that they feel that they aren't educated in it...so dashing te confidence to go ahead. I'm one of them.

Well, lets see what we have from here. As long as I can keep posting (supersparks knows what I am going on about) then I shall be regularly giving my input. I have learnt a lot from this forum, so i want to feel I can give something back to the world!

Good to see these threads back again :-D
I just thought I'd share one quick point on the system maintenance subject that's not been said by someone else already.

I backup my "SystemState" data every night and then keep the most recent 3. Having access to those has quickly got me out of problems that other repair options such as booting with "Last Known Good Configuration" have not helped with.

How to save the thread
Should you wish to save or print the thread in totallity instead of the various pages, drop down to the bottom of the page and in the middle is a box with "Show Printable Version" as one listing.
Click that line of words.

When the next page opens up, note in the upper RIGHT corner is a page listing. Well under the listing is a line saying "Show all xxx posts from this thread" {xxx is replaced by the actual number}.
Select that line.

Now you have all the post on one page.
If you wish to print it, do so.

But if you want to save it to your hdd, then go to File and select Save As:
Select where you want to save it in the applet that opens
Then drop down to File name and you can change it if you wish.
Save AS Type - I select "Web archieve, single file (*.mht) which downloads everything and does not require a internet access when you open it.

Last besure to click the save button.
The page will be download and saved on your hdd.

How to Use Command Line Parameters With the "Ntbackup" Command

Switch: systemstate
Description: Specifies that you want to back up the system state data. When you back up the system state data, all of the system state data is backed up, so the /s switch does not apply. Also, the backup type is forced to normal or copy.



I do believe that is what is being refered to.
