What "little" program could you simply not do without?

This isn't exactly a "must have" for maintenance or security etc., but "i" sure wouldn't be without it. ;) I don't use screensavers they don't "save" anything as far as the monitor is concerned. And to me it's just fluff. But i "do" like to change my desktop wallpaper regularly to pics of my choice.

The best prog i've found to do this is Phyll's Wallpaper Switcher:

Just use setup by right clicking the tray icon and choose how often you want it to change to another pic(in the designated folder)and it does this and also changes to new one when you reboot.If you get bored with current pic,just click the tray icon and it will switch to another. All you need do is create a pic folder wherever you want(i put mine in Program Files>Plus! on my Win9X machines). Then browse to it from setup and click it then ok out. No nags,no spyware and it's completely free. Phillippe Bedard is a French Canadian IT consultant and just made this and other free programs for people to enjoy...:)

List-FC is a right click menu option that lists a folder's contents to a folder.txt file on the desktop and opens it in Notepad.
The List-FC package contains a setup and uninstall file.

It gives both the dos and windows names. Nice program, I use it to make lists of what are on cds or in certain folders.
Of coarse he has some other programs listed there also. ALL FREE TOO!

HI philovance, I dont know about drive image but norton ghost and especially acronis true image can do this. My 13 GB of used hard disk is stored as a 4 GB image.

This type of imaging (whichever tool you use) is MUCH MORE than system restore. You can get closer to this style of backup by using the system restore AND the "File and transfer wizard" together but it is painful. System restore in windows only saves windows system info (including registry etc) nothing to do with apps or configuration.

My Acronis true image (which makes an image without booting and all that [*-deleted word-*]...takes a compressed image from within XP directly!) saves my OS exactly as it was on a certain day...

Driveimage is an exact duplicate of the drive being backed-up.

Default setting is high compression which in my case squeezes about 1.5 gigs down to less than 700 megs. You can choose to use less compression if you like but I've never done so.

It depends on what you have on the drive you're duplicating. If you have lots of media like jpgs or films then they won't be compressed much or at all since they are typically already as compressed as they can be. If you have mostly programs and documents then you will see a significant amount of space saved at max compression.

I save all my media on another drive or on CD to keep my main partition as small as possible.

Talking of Acronis true image if you live in the UK the pro version is free on this months PC PLUS DVD .

also i guess youve never compressed a folder tree (also ... just click on the extract button and it will uncompress the whole file ... but i guess thats just stupid)

I use Treepad Lite which is an information collector. Great for keeping stuff you otherwise would forget (links, stuff about software, etc.). I guess if you have to classify it, it's a database.

The company has many paid versions, but Treepad Lite is free. I supposed the paid versions have lots more nice things, but the free version is sufficient for my purposes.

Otto's Print Screen (freeware)

... a very basic, yet highly useful tool to take quick snapshots of your screen or sections thereof and quickly print them, without loads of settings to make (puts two successive pics on one page by default...makes my office life soo much easier.

Mail Wiper.com is an app. that supposedly removes spam--if you can believe what the maker says. It isn't free but is "guaranteed".
A friend emailed me about this and I had to tell him I was doubtful but have any of you tried it?
I'll pass on him any comments I get. TIA
