https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ I believe the 5th state was formed between each chip---these chips are quite small and are set in a line. That's the next hurdle--to stabilize that 5th state ("suprapositioning").
Uh....what was the topic? Oh yeah....BIOS....Boogeyman In the Operating System...

I'mmmmmm back. To continue, now where was I, oh yes. When I came to these VirDr forums, I knew next to nothing about modern computers and my computer up to this time had suffered at my hands because of my ignorance.
The one to influence me the most in getting started was Mosaic who spent alot of her time with me for a solid week or so and continuing on for a spell after that. Then came my mentors, Train and Bistro and along with the Queen of Hearts, Operation Delta was born. When I attempted to close down Operation Delta there was resistence and the Weekly Subject threads came into being. Along the way I have met a terrific bunch of people who all have their individual strengths. And out of those people came the core of individuals that appear regularly on the Weekly Subject as contributors.
We have made a collective effort to create something that will help people and we get better at it all the time. Each of us that contribute spend quite a bit of time every day that we could be doing something else. The people reading us have the collective knowledge and experince of us at their fingertips. They know they can ask questions if they want to. They are finding out we are a stable resource. Think of this. Every word we write can be saved by someone until they need it.
Then there is the interaction between us who do the writing. That's a big plus to look forward to everyday.
We are here when someone needs us. That is enough. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Can't say I've noticed any increase in the hardware forum. The posts there had been increasing for a while before these threads. But I will take your word for it that all is well in weekly-threadvile. It still kinda baffles me as to the lack of participation (in one form or another, frequent or infrequent) given all the people around this board. Oh well, guess I shall remained baffled.

DrMDJ, Yep, Train brought that to my attention.
Ahhh, a quantum computer brimming over with subatomic particles each of which are capable of 4 or 5 (forget which) simultaneous actions. Of course the US Government wants a piece of that so maybe Orwell 1984 can be reenacted.
Me thinks we need to close this thread and start Chipsets and Controllers.
This thread is closed.

Closing it? But I had the sense Bistro was just on the virge of major posting. Oh well.

Parting Shots
don't forget that other Orwellian little masterpiece, Animal Farm.

CPU and Motherboard cannot power up to get to work without a Basic Input Output System.
It all interacts...
A modern motherboard has other components like Chipset and Controller built in.
This weekly subject is closed.
It offers plenty food for thought, and leaves room for many more questions about particular things.
BIOS was just one of them, so there we go...
We continue with (Honest, I had NO clue.)
Chipsets and Controllers
kind regards.

I think I know what you meant Jaak, but a minor correction on what you just said.
The CPU and motherboard (to a point) both power up before the bios comes in to play. As I said in one of my previous posts, when power is first turned on:
- There is a communication between the power supply and the MB to establish that there is proper power to certain components (including the cpu).
- A (what's known as) "reset" signal is sent to the CPU saying "have at it".
- The CPU then looks at a specific location in memory, which happens to be in the bios memory area, an begins execution of the code there (the bios code).
Now my (quick) final two cents...
As was established in this thread, there are differences between the bioses by different vendors, implemented on different boards. Some of the differences are somewhat meaningless (for all practical purposes). But some can be meaningful. Some bioses give a person access to (more) settings that may be of value in tweaking, etc. In addition, some boards make use of the SoftMenu scheme (mentioned in an earlier post), which is bart of the bios, for CPU setup. SoftMenus offer greater control over cpu set up, which may be of value to those interested in overclocking. The point of all this is simply when looking at motherboards, look at various reviews and see what they say about the bios setup capabilities of a board. For some people there may be some bios pros and cons that are of interest on one board or another.

Hi
just found this page.
it's about ERROR CODES http://www.bioscentral.com/misc/ibmdiag.htm
DrMDJ, thx for the clarification.

Hi Jaak, That is a rather complete site. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
