RESTORE TO FACTORY SETTINGS??

Things are looking better as I've now isolated the updates for the 3 Conexant devices in Windows Update, Optional. If they work, even though I plan to disable the PCI modem, maybe I'll be without any yellow question marks for the first time!

I never found any HP drivers disc, but did try to use the CD I burned with the other Conexant driver package. The path I attempted to make to get the Found New Hardware installer to use the .exe file I placed on the Desktop did not work. But like I say, I have new hope now that the Updates Options downloads might solve the riddle once installed.

You're supposed to just run the .exe. You were trying to install the driver manually, but you would need the extracted .inf files to do that. Pointing to the .exe won't work. I mentioned this in post #59.

I realized almost after the fact while I was away from the laptop after it asked for restart that I had heard the Windows shutdown sound! Then the startup sound...woohoo, almost all of it worked. I decided to cancel a .NET framework install after it had downloaded in favor of getting all the hardware optionals handled first...now it shows as failed : / Could that end up being a big deal?

Here's what cancelled (failed):

Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile for Windows XP x86 (KB 982670)

Can I get that one back for download and install if it's necessary? I figure that since it wasn't in the high-priority update category, it might not be a big deal, but I felt queasy cancelling the install...

Sound never "sounded" so good!! And there are no yellow question marks in the Device Manager!!

Thank you! (now for all the rest of the updates, save for Bing Bar and Windows Search.

.NET framework is not required unless you have applications that need it. You can always get it later.

One day after completing most of the updates, installing MSE and running a quick scan, I do notice a considerable slowness in my laptop. In and of itself I don't consider it a big deal, but one thing I do want to mention is the appearance of 1) an AVG SafeGuard toolbar which I never knowingly installed. I wouldl ike to get rid of it as soon as possible...is there an uninstaller? It's especially troubling because, even after 2 reformats, I noticed a tendency to see an AVG webpage load as the default IE6 "homepage" before I was able to install IE8 and begin the drivers/update/virus install process. Not sure if, after 2 reformats, that could still happen unless there is/was a deeper infection problem...like a rootkit or something?

Also, whenever I reboot/start up, a "Device Driver Installation complete" window is the first thing I see. No results listed, and I all I have to do is click the OK button and the window goes away -- until next time.

Last question...on this type of HP CTO laptop running XP SP3, is there a way to "print screen?" Typically all I meed to do is tap the PrtScn SysRq button and I can paste what's been put in temporary memory into, say, Paint. When I've tried that simple procedure with this laptop, however, nothing is pasted. Is there an alternate means of doing this?

RE Windows Search

I may have unwittingly installed Windows Search even though I was told to avoid it...it probably happened while 132 updates were "self-installing" as I slept last night.

Is there a way to disable/uninstall Search?

In line with my above post, I'm also receiving a prompt in the area of the systray that "your drivers did not instal correctly and the program may not perform properly." They're not the exact words, but close enough. I wonder why I'm receiving these prompts, as I figured I was finally out of those woods?!

In other news...))

I uninstalled my HP Bluetooth and it's left a yellow question mark in the DevMgr...do I have to have it installed??

Speaking of installations, I still see a window on start or reboot asking if I'd like to install new hardware -- this before the HP Bluetooth uninstall. I think it's a leftover from all the times I unsuccessfully attempted to install the multimedia audio controller driver until I was finally able to get to IE8 and Win Update. When I click cancel in the window,I get a prompt in the systray telling me that driver installation was unsuccessful and my hardware might not work properly.

Unless you use blue tooth, just go into DevMgr, R-clcik it and disable it.

Then reboot and see if the pop up reappears.

I use a USB blue tooth stick to get pictures off of a couple phones is all.

Followed your instructions to the letter and now the yellow question mark has a red x through it!

I might as well reinstall it because at least my DevMgr will be clean : )

You can if you want to. I have been known to leave the red X and not worry about it.

Once you figure out what are the correct drivers, burn them to a cd against future need.

Sorry. I was out of town for the weekend. Glad to see that things got sorted.

If the BT is built-in, you could go into the bios and disable it there. Then it wouldn't show up in Device Manager anymore.

Thanks for the message, and I think I'll leave it alone for now. I decided to reinstall the Softpaq software for it if only to get rid of the yellow question mark!

I'm also still seeing the "phantom" window (jpeg taken by my Android phone, attached) about successful installation of device drivers. I get it after every boot or restart, but now I can at least rule out the Bluetooth reinstall because the same window was appearing even after I had disabled the Bluetooth in the DevMgr per Train's post. So I'm suspecting it's related to the trouble I had for so long getting the multimedia audio controller installed, but why is it still appearing? Thus the name "ANNOYING" I've saved as the jpeg : / Any remedy for this?

I'm also wondering if I can take a picture of what's on my screen by tapping the Insert/Prt Sc button. I would have used that method to save the "phantom" window in Paint as I typically do, but the Paste function yields nothing, though I typically use that method to save images in temp memory for attachment purposes. Is that function not available in XP Home?
