i was not able to install a printer using "\\ZESZUT\ZESZUTLASERJET". windows could not find it. however, i DID install one by browsing the network. i found it that way.

i wasn't sure what printer to install here, so installed another laserjet and called it "QB Printer". it installed fine and is using the LPT1 port. i then ran the NET USE command. everything looks fine.

except when i run one of the qb programs, nothing prints. and i don't see any print job in any of the printers.

3. While you still have that Notepad window above open, what happens if press [Ctrl][P] and send it to that same printer?

3) nothing happens if i try to print it to the "QP printer". it will print to the default (laser jet) printer fine.

Where are your printers, especially your Shared printer?

For example, here's what I see here:

The top is what's im my XPMode's "Printers and Faxes", (click Start > Run, type in control printers and press [Enter]), and the bottom is what I see when I type net share at a command prompt, (click Start > Run, type in cmd and press [Enter]. At the CMD prompt, type in net share and press [Enter]).

Can you post a screenshot of your XPMode's "Printers and Faxes"?

Oh, can you also post a screenshot of your XPmode's Computer name? (To get to that window, click Start, right-click My Computer, select Properties and then click the Computer Name tab).

also, i keep getting copies of the laser jet printer in both 7 and xp. don't know why.

You would install the same model as the shared printer on the Win7Host. The main thing is to set it to print to LPT1.

Why is your VM in the OEMWorkgroup workgroup? I thought we established that the workgroup name is "workgroup".

no, oemworkgroup is the common workgroup here.

Let's try this:

1. In XPMode's "Printers and Faxes":
   
   
   1. right-click the "Hp LaserJet P2035 (from ZESZUT)" (the second one down in your screenshot)
   2. click "Sharing..."
   3. click the "Sharing" tab
   4. select the "Share this Printer" option
   5. in the "Share name:" box, type in P2035
   6. click the "General" tab
   7. in the "Comment:" box, type in Share name: P2035
   8. then click OK.
   
   
2. At a XPMode command prompt,
   
   
   1. type the following three commands, pressing [Enter] after each:
      
      
      net use lpt1: /d /y
      net use lpt1: \\virtual_xp\p2035 /persistent:yes
      net view \\virtual_xp
      
      and you should see P2035 under the "Share name" column with LPT1 in the "Used as" column to the right of that.
   
   
3. If you do, try printing something in your QBASIC program.

success!

i was able to run two programs and get output printed to the laserjet.

Nice. I thought I mentioned creating a local share and redirecting another printer to that local share before, but SpywareDr's instructions are more explicit :)

ya, a BIIIIIIG thanks to the two of you. i'm not closing this thread just yet. i'm still working out how to work with two operating systems at the same time.

You're more than welcome. As far as figuring out how to works with two Operating Systems, it's much easier with two (or more) monitors. :)

i'd LOVE to have two monitors, doc. but this pc has an onboard graphics card with only one output. *sigh*
