Nothing in the hijackthis log but a little cleaning.
Can you please do the following.
===============
Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - AutorunsDisabled - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - AutorunsDisabled - (no file)
O18 - Protocol: AutorunsDisabled - (no CLSID) - (no file)
Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".
===============
Awaiting your MBA-M log.

Thanks Crunchie! Will follow your directions for Hijack This steps in a few minutes. Meanwhile ere's my mbam log:

Crunchie,
does my mba-m log look ok? I cleaned a couple of things it found.
computer is still pretty slow at shutting down, still doing that roughly two minute delay between when I do start > shut down and when it gives me the shutdown options.
thanks!
Tenney
-
Sorry, I never got notification of your reply.
When was the last time the pc was reformatted? A lot of things can happen that will cause slow-downs and there is nothing like a fresh start :).
If the pc works ok in between startup and shutdown, I would not worry.
-
Thanks Crunchie.
The laptop is not quite two years old and I've avoided burning it down to the ground and starting over so far, though the motherboard expired last summer and the tech guys in my dept put in a new one (but the slowdown I've described is very recent).
I think I like your "finally, oh well" approach to it: it's not worth re-doing the whole installation to make it start up and shut down faster. So I guess I'll not worry about it and fiddle occasionally--reducing startups seemed to help for a couple days, anyway.
Will probably bother you w more major stuff in awhile--have 4 kid computers where I generally DO just reformat and start over, but maybe I can avoid that with a workaround sometimes.
Have a good week,
Tenney

If you are having problems other than the slow startup/shutdown, let me know and I will try something else.
-
thanks Crunchie.
Malwarebytes just found and supposedly removed two rootkits that didn't show up in the earlier scan. What do you think?
And do you like Sophos Anti-Rootkit and/or Unhackme (which I installed then uninstalled a few months ago but am thinking about re-installing.
best,
Tenney

Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE- You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
- Physically disconnect from the internet.
- Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
- Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
- When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
- Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..
Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Run Combofix ONCE only!!
-
Thanks Crunchie! I ran ComboFix and will post in next post in a moment. It seems to have found a couple of things.
One thing I messed up on, hope it's ok: I disabled NAV and also UnHackMe, which I'd reinstalled last night, and on reboot UnHackMe launched while ComboFix was preparing its log. But the log finished its work.
Also: UnHackMe still claims to be finding a registry key that is "invisible or recently deleted." I'll try to get that info out of the program and post it here if I can. But here's the ComboFix log.
thanks again,
Tenney

I need to post the ComboFix log in two posts as it's so long that it's not letting me post the whole thing. so here it comes.
