I don't know how long it USED to take... but I posted a "New Thread" message over 30 minutes ago, and if I search for my own user name, it still hasn't shown up.
Is this normal?
shiva_42--As far as I am concerned, and think I reported a reasonably long time ago with no response, left-clicking New Posts or Search never gives an accurate result.

The speed issue is being worked on. I plan to do some database maintenance which may help. The search functions are native to the software.

I have had a dial-up connection to the internet since about 1994. Up until 2002, I was always able to connect with my 56K modem at 44 - 46K. Suddenly, overnight I was connecting at 24 - 26K. My sister lives a couple of blocks from me and the same thing happened to her dialup connection.
I started checking with some of the telecom experts, who are members of the North Texas PC Users Group and discovered that SBC had contracted to have software written to split the bandwidth on dialup connections. They cut the bandwidth in half but they continued to charge the full rate for their dialup service unless a customer protested, then they would reduce your rate.
In the drive for bigger and bigger profits, the major ISPs are cutting corners in terms of bandwidth and the hardware resources needed for the internet's backbone. This includes sufficient routers and servers to handle the traffic. Just think how much email traffic has grown over the same timeframe. 80% of the email traffic that I receive now is SPAM. That SPAM eats up a lot of bandwidth and server resources.
Combine that email & SPAM growth with demand for bigger and bigger profits, then it is not hard to imagine that there are bottlenecks in terms of both routers and servers. It is also true that these "turds" that fill our inboxes are constantly changing which servers or series of servers are sending out these millions and millions pieces of SPAM. So a router that is a bottleneck at 3 AM today may not be the bottleneck at 4 AM today.
The major internet providers may also be operating with insufficient hardware resources to support the growth of internet traffic for their portion of the internet backbone. Who is to say that there are more of these games being played on all of us? It takes time to build a case for this.
This may or may not be a problem that VDR can solve.

A nice post Linda, and I keep forgetting about the spam problem and how much volume there is. The VirDr delay is a steady constant problem though. And if it were QWest I would have thought JM would have resolved it by now with them.

What happens if the problem is QWest, SBC and virtually all of the major ISPs? I think that the real reason that so many of the ISPs started using SPAM filters is because the overwhelming increase in SPAM was driving their internet backbone hardware costs to unbelievable levels.
How would VDR or anyone solve a problem, if the problem is caused by an internet backbone, which does not have sufficient hardware resources to handle the current traffic loads?

You welcome. At least we would know the cause even if VirDr could not do anything about it. This is an issue that will not go away. The problem if too big for might just be able to be solved by all participants. If they are in denial because they don't want there customers to lose confidence the players only delay a solution.
Those that follow the WWWeb were aware many moons ago that this was a potential web threatening problem. We now see more and more sporadic slow downs randomly in different sections of the country.
People need to be aware of this so complaints can be voiced and directed where they need to be.
I believe that 80% or more of computer users are 100 % vulnerable to the fall out from these goings on.
This is a vast and complex issue encompassing us all. And by that I mean anyone connected to the web- be it vendor or user. Computers have become so powerful and widespread that those few wishing to harm the majority can and will.
I've found that bookmarking www.discussions.virtualdr.com and bypassing the start page speeds things up for me. The start page takes exactly 18 seconds to load for me. Almost as if it's on a timer of some kind. The ads load first(a few seconds)then everything sits for the remainder of the 18 seconds.
