I seem to recall reading somewhere that XP does not have DOS and does not use it. Why, I wouldn't know. Perhaps someone will be along shortly to confirm this.
Thanks for your earlier remarks.

You are not mislead. It is based on NT, but there are a few dos type programs and commands that do work.
Chkdsk, defrag and a few others will run from the command line.
Fact is go start, commandline, [type in] chkdsk /? and hit enter
A dos box will open up and give you the help files on checkdisk.
This question(s)involve more unknown territory to me.:p
It appears that I now have a good usable burn of my HDD and/or "that" partition on my hard drive. How do I go about making my hard drive ready to be restored before using my Drive Image burned CDs? Should I fdisk and then partition the hard drive into just one large partition? The HDD is only 13.2 GBs but I see no immediate need to have a partition and I just want to restore it to what is was before running DI the first time when the partition was created---if it was indeed created. The longer I wait to do this, the older my burned info becomes because of my ongoing use of the computer. I don't really know--and can't readily see a way to know--that I have burned the partition or what was on my hard drive before I first used Drive Image.
I hope I have asked the correct question and hope that you have an answer/directions for me. TIA Again and Again and Again.
I think you did. :DQuote:

But, you can do as you wish, but do fdisk it and make it all primary dos if you just want 1 partition The HDD is only 13.2 GBs but I see no immediate need to have a partition and I just want to restore it to what is was before running DI the first time when the partition was created---if it was indeed created. But first let us see if there is a 2nd partition.
Boot to a Startup [boot ] floppy.
Select 2 and hit enter when Questioned on the cdrom support.
at the A:\ [type in] fdisk
A:|fdisk
and hit enter
At the enable large disk support select Y and hit enter
Select 4. Display Partition Information
Note what it says and post that information.
Like partition 1, Status A, Pri Dos, Mbytes
Then the next line if there is one, etc
Let us see if it is there yet. Before we go further.
To get out of fdisk, hit ESC, hit Esc
At the A:\ do a Ctrl-Alt-Del
When it starts to reboot, remove boot floppy and you will reboot to window.
Post what you find please.
BOY, that DOS screen is as black as it was dark last night for Halloween. I get all nervous when in DOS but Smarty you knew I didn't have that partition any more, if I ever had it!! Here are the findings:
Current Fixed Drive:1
Partition:C\
Status:A
Type:PRI DOS
Mbytes:7326
System:FAT32
Usage:59%
Total disk space is 12425 Mbytes(1MB=1048576 bytes
I suspect that I haven't shown you anything you didn't already expect to be found there. That being true then this is confirmation
for you.
I am listening for your reasons as to why I should partition my HDD. And if so, what size should I choose. My "logic" in not partitioning was because if I lose the hard drive--without a backup, I lose everything anyway. However, outside of adding software, Favorites and Docs; etc. I don't tend to save many things on this PC. If it is downloaded software or other large items, I could just burn those to CDR. I don't save music. I am only saying these things just so you will know But I am MOST definitely listening to and open to your suggestions.
What next now Coach??
If I should forget, hope you have a nice weekend--like the last one :D
Just remembered that if you partition it, You would have to do a clean install of everything, Cluster size you know.
Yes, I'd say you had that hidden partition. But, you did remove it.
Now, let me know what you want to try/do and we will go from there.
21.7F last night. Will be staying close to home.
Now go get the 2nd hdd is what I recommend and I will Order me a new set of ear plugs. Figure that I have about 2 days after you get it before you scream with joy and never mind who you will be fussing out. ;)

A couple of excerpts from your last reply:
Now, let me know what you want to try/do and we will go from there.
I don't really know what to do. I am trying to listen to my peer but I guess I have some reservations about this and then maybe FUD(fear, uncertainty and doubt) is playing havoc with my mind.
Now go get the 2nd hdd is what I recommend
I will check out the sales tomorrow when the newspapers come with a view to perhaps buying one. I as best that I can tell, my present 13GB is an EIDE AT(128 kb Cache) ULTA 33 MB per second. It is a Maxtor 5400. Anything else needed to help me decide what I should buy and I suppose a 30-40GB size would be enough. Of course, for just a few bucks more, another 20-30GB can be bought. I am totally open for any suggestions. Hey, you have brought me this far and I trust your knowledge/wisdom :D
And, if you need those ear plugs--I'll buy 'em for ya.
Get some rest!!
Is there a combatibility question involved in buying a HD that will co-exist with what I have. And, you are there and I am here and you have the "know how" to do all of this and I don't. Hand holding while walking me through this may be tedious for you and nerve recking for me but I may be game!!
This may sound a bit off to some, but I have always enjoyed helping folks to learn something new. But, do not lose sight of the fact we have all had to start somewhere and that sure seems like awful shakey grounds when we first look at it. Scarey in fact. Just a bit of personal history there :DQuote:

Now that is very normal. Been there myslf, as has everyone else who has upgraded their computer

40GB will be more than adaquate. And you will be wanting to make 3 partitions on it. As a 40GB hdd has about 38GB of space on it the partitions will about 12+GB each. And with that done you can clone your c drive to D drive. And with the cds you have a double backup.
Now for another goody. If you want to all you would need to do is make D: bootable, then change the new hdd to master [or master with slave, depends on make there] and the old one to slave and when you boot, you will boot to the new hdd. It will be C: and the old one will be D:

Just might be tempted to take you up on that LOL. Just turn my hearing aides off is what I'll do. ;)

I have been looking at Best Buy. Saw a Maxtor 7200 40GB with 100 MB transfer(max) for $100--$60 after rebate of $40. With mine being 5400, I suspect I will have more heat. I have never had a heat problem and yet I only have two fans!
This clean install here and partition there and fdisk there talk kinda have me going in circles;) but I'll try to stay with this to the end. Your willingness to help me is most evident already and besides, I have seen your replies all over this board. Just as you said, you enjoy helping others and that is my philosophy also. I do get satisfaction knowing that I have given help to someone who appreciates that help. Especially someone whom I don't even know and have never seen and probably never will. But help is help where ever given and to whomever.
Strange, but I kinda thought you might recommend that I transfer everything from my present HDD to a new HDD and keep my old HDD as Master and the new drive as Slave. How would I know which is best and the easiest for me---WITH YOUR HELP is how!!
BTW, the nearest Best Best is 40 miles away so I may just wait 'til tomorrow to see what other sales there might be. Best Buy sales end today and begin a new week tomorrow. Staples is the only store in my town.
7200rpm hdds do bootup a bit faster. And I doubt if you will have a heat problem.
Best run over to staples and make a price check. Take tha ad with you and see what you can negociate. They have been known to do just that. A bit under match infact. Byt, not all of the stores. Seems it is up to the manager from what I hear.
$60 dallors for a 7200 rpm 40GB is a good price. Darn good infact. Now if that is a instore rebate :D
Thought I'd best report in--don't want you getting lonely over there. :D
Well, I missed Staples by 21 minutes. They close locally at 7PM on Saturdays; not 9PM as I suspected. I could have been there before 7 had I known. Gotta study your proposals some more anyway. And, or course, your directions.
Tomorrow a new week of sales in the computer stores start all over and I'll see what is available.
We do make those type of mistakes. :D
Guess I will pickup the local scandal sheets and see what is in there myself in the morning.
You will get it. ;)
Train:
Just hope you have been resting cause I now have a second hard drive soooo I'll be looking for ya.
Picked up a 30GB Maxtor 7200 RPM today at Office Depot for a net $50 after an in store $10 instant cash rebate, mail-in rebates of $10 and $20 each. The best bargain I could find and I think the size is acceptable and when I install it tomorrow; I'll have a 13 and 30GB. Before installing, I'll re-read what you have put here for me but at last reading I think you said to install the new HDD as Master and my old HDD as Slave and I would then be ready to copy from my old to my new what is now on my old HDD. Or was this Master/Slave thing the other way around? Or am I to use those burned DI CDs to copy them to the new HDD? Gotta read that part with greater interest and with my mind in the
memorizing mode. (Been reading too many items about this since I became interested in having 2 HDDs. Believe I need to concentrate on just yours and ignore all others :D )
Are you ready for this? ;)

Not bad at all.
1st. Disconnect old hdd and hook the new one in by itself.
2nd. Fdisk and make 50% primary and 50% extended , remember extended need to be made 100% logical.
You should wind up with 14+GB partitions.
Let's get that done first.
Then when that is done, hook the old one back in [should be master on primary ide] and make the new one slave and hook it to the secondary ide.
That is for a starter.
