Hi Caeser, Will look at the AMD you mentioned. Train went that way too - AMD, part of it was price.
Let me ask all of you something. Why the big difference in price between AMD and Intel?

Caeser
That was cheese residue you sent. Like you find on PIZZA, who can stand that stuff. Give me jalapenos and pickled fish any day. Yum YUM.
See we knew someone had not read his homework, or he would have known about that little glitze. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Goose,
I think AMD is selling cheap to gain a larger chunk of the cpu market. They probably have less overhead considering they are not the industy standard as Intel once was. Intel for many years had been the only legitimate chip maker and I guess they got fat as the US auto makers did in the 1970s. Now the cost Intel has making chips is much higher than there competition. Thats just my opinion I could be wrong

GG1,
In terms of your case... I know you are looking for the InWin S500, a fine case. If you choose to stick with the InWin line, a couple things (though you may already know them) worth keeping in mind in your quest.
The S500 is really the same case as the S506, S508, S600, S700, and S800 models. The only difference is the front cover design/look. The internals are the same, including the placement of things (like the PS). So if you can find one of these, but not the S500...
Whether buying locally or online, confirm that the PS is the 300 watt variety you want. These cases come with 235, 250 watt supplies also. In addition, InWin uses good quality PSes (PowerMan or equivalent). So ideally you want the case with the "factory" PS in it. Some shops swap power supplies for cheaper ones to enable lower pricing of the unit. Similarly, if selecting a 300watt upgrade to an "advertised" case from some place be sure they are giving a quality name PS for the upgrade.

And talking about cases, here's a link a friend just sent me concerning hard drives... (a sneaky way to drop in a different subject, eh?) Sorry.... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
DrMDJ mentioned something interesting there. A local shop here was having a sale on InWin cases, so I checked it out. (The ad didn't mention the model). Turns out they were A500's (with the ps installed vertically--yuuuch!) AND they were NOT the factory installed ps's (very low wattage). No wonder they were so cheap. Gotta watch it.

Good Morning All,
Philgo, I chose the P-3 over the P-4 from the standpoint of dependability and proven performance at the time. November last.
T-Bolt, checked out the link. Thanks. And where are you at on building.
DrMDJ, thanks for the comments on the Inwin cases.
Thanks Bistro. The case will be an Inwin ATX S-500 series/300W PS. Probably order that tonight. With the time and expense to run over to the metroplex, I think I am farther ahead money wise to order off the net and there have been enough goods links from you all to accomplish that and get a good price to boot.

Bistro,
You had a negative reaction to the p/s being installed verticallly instead of horizontally what is your reasoning behind this....is it an airflow issue or that vertical p/s takes up more room for the hands to get in?? curious
-
Like I said, even the S-500 can have different or non-factory installed PSes. It never hurts to check.

Not to speak for ole Bistro, but the discussion of the cons of the A-500 is in this thread.

On that particular case (A500 with the vertical ps), the ps was right over the CPU with barely enough room to put a standard heatsink/fan. If one was overclocking and wanted a slightly larger cooler, no joy. True, the ps intake pulled air off the CPU area, but not really enough to make much difference. Just gets in the way of doing much work around the CPU area---cuts down on air flow. I see no advantage whatsoever with a vertical mount ps. He-he, for once the lawmakers would be spending time on something useful.. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
On the other hand it gives one the oportunity to test some power tools moving that PS.... I don't mind a vertically placed PS - BUT NOT WHERE I'M SUPPOSED TO WORK.

I'd like to see that. Just got home and going to save the threads and go to bed. Computer crash at work yesterday afternoon. Not fun. Put in 13hrs. today.
But one question. Which plug will come on the power supply. One for the board or what? Or is that configured properly by knowing the type such as ATX. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Hi GG1
if you change plan and go for P4, you need a case with the extra connector for P4 motherboards.
today Raymond told me about a site, after I asked him where one could get case with USB connectors in front, like so many barebone systems have...
he showed me http://colorcases.com

ATX mobo>then ATX case>then ATX power supply. Gotta match them up. If the ps comes with the case, you're OK. If ordering it separately, match it up. The ps will have the right power connector.
