Thanks bistro. I was over to pricewatch and saw some great prices for what I need. Just wasn't sure about the vendors. I'll assume that Pricewatch uses reputable websites and pick something out.

This is going to be the emachine ressurection project. maxx, Oh Oh !! Got an idea. For those of us that need backup (that's everybody), and don't have the big bucks, find a used computer that you could save "stuff" on and also be able to get on the internet to communicate with in case your primary computer goes down. Many possibilites in this scenario.

Where we are going with this is that when we are finished you will be able to picture in your mind the mobo and what is plugged in or attached to it. And this will help you in troubleshooting, modding, asking questions and the like. How many times have you asked yourself when reading a question on these forums, "I wonder where that is". Now you will know. You could even copy and paste one of these mobos into a file on your computer for reference or print it and make notes on it. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

As you can see after discussing general troubleshooting all we have left to go into will be the plugins to the board. These are various cards that plug in and other periphials that are plugged in through cables.

Been lurkin' and have gathered some great info. from this thread. The few times i've thought of something to add, the quickies have beat me to it. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Would like to add just one hint tho'. Maxx mentioned "Pricewatch" as a good place to find bargains and i agree. But, i've heard tales of horror from people who just went with the best price and didn't check the company out. I would suggest that when you find the best "good" deal there, you immediately go over to www.resellerratings.com and check them out. Granted, they may not be perfect in their evaluations(cause low-life resellers can also post "good" stuff there as B.S.),but after reading a few reviews you can pretty much pin down the phoney balonie's.
Some will say "Bizrate" can be used to check, but have read comments that they are not always honest about company's and their rating system is very hard to follow at times.

And which of these cards need to be installed for barbones operation. (With an eye towards troubleshooting.)

Oh....I dunno....."Kwan Fong's Cantonese Take-Out and Refurbished PC's" have been pretty good to me. Good prices on parts and the food's not bad either.....

Greengoose: I was working with the Medium Frustration version.....haven't played with it for a couple of weeks. Thinking about dropping it for Visual Basic (Kindergarten Version).

Well, cards....hmmm, Jack of Spades would fit nicely into that black slot, and the Queen of He....hrrrmmmppphhh, never mind....

There's really no end to what kind of cards you can put into your motherboard, it all depends on your interests and needs.
For a stripped system to run you only need a graphics card (AGP or PCI) if not build into the mainboard already.

The next thing you'll probably want is a "sound" sound card. For simple, unsophisticated sound operation a moderately priced card can be had for maybe $20-50 (I'm not that well informed on prices in the US...).

In case you want to run some of the more advanced peripherials you may need a SCSI host adaptor with internal/external connectors. They come in a lot of price ranges.

Video editing will often require a card for capturing of video sequences (if not build into your existing graphics card).

Alternate drive controllers may include ATA 100 (if your mainboard isn't equipped with this) or RAID (for added data storage security or more speed).

And a lot of other highly specialized cards that I'm too lazy to mention or completely unaware of...

yes, you can design [if you will] or configure your computer pretty much when it comes to adding pci cards. Me, I just have a netcard in pci and my video is agp. Do not need anymore cards. For a barebones system, if it has onboard video then ya don't need any cards to at least do the initial checkout. If no onboard sound then you obviously need either an AGP or PCI graphics card. For the system to "function" all one really needs is video. But of course we all want/need more.

Probably most people will want/need a video and a sound card, even if they have one or both onboard. Network cards are quite common today (home networks, DSL or cable internet). Some people still prefer modem cards to external modems for dialup. Add on controller cards often find their way in to a system eventually, but usually not right off the bat. And with the rise in dvd, mpeg decoder cards are not uncommon. Some people may find need for an add-on firewire card at some point. The "average" person probably has no need for scsi, few will ever need or want them (IMHO).

For many people 5 or 6 PCI slots is more than they'll ever need. In number that is. But it's nice to have them. It allows for spacing of cards. This can be a benefit in terms of cooling, and sometimes it can be a benefit because putting two particular cards right next to each other can be a problem (not enough space).

So a person then has alot of expansion capabitity for different things that could be done with a computer. And this list will continue to grow such as the video camera capabilities. As old as I am, I continue to be amazed at the leaps and bounds of our technology over the past, say, fity years or so. And this is probably just the tip of what will happen in the future.

Kallikru started and should we try and list as many cards and their functions as we can to give everyone a hint of what their computer is capable really capable of? From what I have seen so far I don't know what there is out there to "enhance your computing experience".

I might be inclined to treat cards under some sort of seperate topic. Cards and their function seems outside the scope of motherboards and cpus. Just my opinion...
