VBulletin 3 - Suggestions, queries, changes?... post them here

By the way, this lousy format makes it a nightmare to read HijackThis logs. Have a look at this:

I don't have the problem at all with FireFox 1.0.1. My posts stretch all the way across the screen... :confused:

Shiva, I just used the Adblock extension for FF to get rid of the advertisement and it works great. You may be doing the same thing.

...effectively doubling the size of the post. With some HJT logs, one post could end up taking a whole page. Not good. :( I help with HJT logs on another forum and I would find that irritating.

FF comes to the rescue once again :cool:

It just seems to me that while users can each possibly find ways of offsetting the undesirable effects of what they are complaining about by adjusting resolutions, using add blockers, switching browsers, etc that this should not need to be the default case.

Amen. I don't mind seeing an ad on a main page, but when I get down to the business of reading posts, I don't need a semi-truck blocking my path and keep changing lanes when I do (now I'm waxing metaphorically).

Let me put it more bluntly: I am not in the least interested with an advertiser and his product that screws up my view of a site (ads that are too large, "floaters" that block my view, popups, etc.). It is intrusive and not commensurate with the purpose of the site. The advertiser is sponsoring the site, not the other way around.

good, probably my ad-blocker in IE helping me also... it's built into the DogPile toolbar, but probably the google toolbar or equivalent would work also...

It still bears discussion however... I'd hate to think I'd HAVE to run an ad-blocker just to get my VD pages to format correctly...

I agree with the last 3 posts. There are many instances when I am not at home and will visit VDr on someone else's computer using IE. I would not want to be in this situation. Ever.

When doing a search, why can't I write the username I am looking for and a key word at the same time? This used to be possible.

EDIT: There seems to be a general problem with the search. Try searching for the word computer. You will get all of todays posts that have the word computer, and then it jumps to 12-13-2004. :confused:

By tonight sometime the search will be working fine. The the entire DB has to be indexed after the upgrade. Takes the better part of a day to do, and I started it around 5 am NYC time, this morn.

I'm late in posting but wanted to say "Great Job" on the changes thus far. The empty 1/3 right side of the screen is a tad annoying but it's okay. I also love the new CP.
Kudos to all staff and members who make a difference in being here and doing what they do. Keep it up, VDR!
P.S. On the main page, the "Never" ones - IT Management and Java, i.e. - will they 'never' be actual threads or has nobody ever posted there, yet? Just curious as to what "Never" meant.

You can view posts since your last visit, by clicking new posts. What you see there must be a modification someone made to the software, because it's not even mentioned on the vbulletin website.

VirtualDr runs much slower on my computer as it loads different web pages now. Any one else experiencing this?

Just read most of this thread with that big white space staring me in the face ... and now I have a throbbing headache. Not sure how much I'll be hanging out here in the days to come. I don't think we should be expected to adjust res or switch browsers or magnify the screen ... just to do a little reading. I respect the need for adverts ... but this is just painful.

Yes!!!....pages have slowed down for me in both IE and FFox. :(

Hmm, I suppose it could be related to the indexing required to get the search feature working. That just about doubles the database size. Or, the indexing may not be quite done yet, and that is a VERY server intensive operation. That could also explain it.

I noticed it was slower last night at home and in FF the little bar indicated it was almost done but still waiting for one itme and sory to sya it seemed to be the ad at the top of the white space.

Hongman, what purpose does knowing the number of posts serve ?

Creative's european site also tells you that info when you login, but if it tells me that there have been 1,250 posts say, it's not like i'm going to go and track them all down to read ?

I noticed the slowness last night also but did not take time to time it out. Here it seems to be taking 2X the amount of time over what we had. The other sites I use have not been affected. (Use on average 5 to 7 multiple windows simaltaneously)

Nix: I thought it would be handy more for the mods and people that are here very often, but JP is right in saying clicking 'New Posts' does exactly the same thing.

JP, I have to admit I too noticed a slowdown starting yesterday after the upgrade. Not always, but... And the thing is I think it is something happening at the browser rather than the board (per se) level as I notice that with a VDR window open other non-VDR open windows suffer the slowness too. Not all the time I don't think, but it is there. I ddin't bring it up cause I though maybe it was something esle (and hadn't really focused on it). But since other users here are mentioning it...

Possibly somehow directly or indirectly ad related (something in the particular ads or such)?

JP, am I correct in saying that nothing will be done with the ads? I thought that FF would block them all, but it doesn't. Its not something that I can tolerate. Unless you tell us something is being done, I will cut down my time on VDr drastically.

I really hope this ad/layout stuff can be something there is room for negotiation/reevaluation on.

I'm not in a position to say. This is what I was told to create. All I can do is relay the responses and suggestions, when it comes to things like ad placement. Other adjustments and features I may or may not be able to institute on my own, depending on how large they are

I know Joe probably feels like the sky is falling on him, but I have to ask/revive a question/issue. It was mentioned on the first page of this thread but I did not find an answer anywhere within this thread.

It relates to the issue of (say) opening attachment in the thread, the fact that it opens it in the same window, and/but gives no viable way to get back to the thread/page you started from. Is there a way around this (sorry if I missed it here)? Can anything be done about this?

Yes, there's something I can do about it, but it requires editing the templates, so I think we'd better find out what the majority would like. For me the back button brings me right back to the thread the attachment was in.

I'd go for opening attachments in a new window so it's easier to read about the problem and then quickly look at the illustration and back again etc.. it's much faster hitting the browser/taskbar tabs than moving back and forth between pages.

I'm gonna poll it.

Yes, hitting the back button isn't the problem when if I am already logged in. But if not logged in but viewing threads and then open an attachement (which forces the login) it gets a lot funkier to get back to the thread. And the point fink raised is also was something (that was) nice to have.

Just raising the issue. The majority can rule. :D

By the way, it's nice to see that Jupiter has provided a nice support structure behind ya to step forward in a pinch. (is there an echo when you say "hey guys, any one want to lend a hand?"). :D No comment expected back by the way.

This is part of my job. Part of what I'm supposed to be doing. :)

The ads are a Jupitermedia decision, there is nothing that Joe can do about that. You can rest assured that we will let everyone's displeasure be known to the powers that be, though. I very much hope that it doesn't stop anybody from visiting - this is still a great site for getting computer help after all.

I don't think anyone is arguing whether there should be ads or not. I didn't mind a bit in V2, and I don't mind in V3. I DO mind however, where it is placed. If it screws with the format of the forums, then thats too much for me. If its on top, bottom or wherever and it leaves the forums to their original lengths, then thats fine by me. I never cared to have to scroll down a bit. I just don't understand why someone would decide to do something so ridiculous. What were they thinking (besides revenue)?????
