Morning.
Not a full version. Upgrade.Yes I do have the product key code.
We installed it on Texas Angel's Computer this morning.
Just booted up with the disk I made from her computer using my CD and it did boot just fine. Did the fdisk and rebooted (after esc) and was fixing to do the format. I looked one more time to see the disply in fdisk and it's still says SYSTEM UNKNOWN.
The menu is just a little different than the one I did last night. But basic stuff looks the same other than that.
I have not gone any further. Not tryed to type the format c: /s yet.
After seeing the SYSTEM Unknown.
I also made a bootdisk at bootdisk.com while there. Haven't tried that one yet.

Deleted again to try once more.
Under #4 it says;
Display Partition Information
Current fixed disk drive: 1
No partitions defined
Press Esc to continue

OK...was that the partition you made last nigh that you just deleted? Or was it one you just made that gave you "System Unknown"?
If the former, go back in and try to create a partition again--follwing the directions (enable l. d. support, etc.). Exit, power down, reboot, and view the partition. Post back what it says.

This is in the help file

Windows 98 Start up Problems
Using the tools available on Start Up disk.

Yes...that's wonderful... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Did you create a new partition (and what's the info on it)? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
We're trying the disk you have first---then try going straight to that upgrade CD and see if by some trick of the book we can get it to prep your hd; lastly we'll try using the ultimate boot disk you have to do so (hesitant to use that; don't have it in front of me so won't be able to guide you).

I started out by deleting the one last night then re did it. Then looked again and that is what it said. I just deleted again and started over and it says the same thing System Unknown. I can't look at the end without hitting esc when it gets finished so I have to reboot and type fdisk again to get to the menu.
I am back at no partitions again. Looking at the help file.

OK....I assume you now have a partition that has 19+ gigabytes showing, but still has System Unknown? Great https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ That's OK for now. Let's see if it will format and then show up as FAT 32. Go back into FDISK, NO Cd-Rom support, and at the A: prompt type:
format<space>c:<space>/s
Post back. If it "takes" you should see a warning that all data will be wiped out ---THAT'S GOOD---say Yes! and the formatting will start.
-
Hey, you say that's the Upgrade version. Do you have a Win 95 version CD? 98 will ask to "see" it...
-
Yes I have the 95 CD.

I am defying bistro https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
It says on the sheet to go watch tv, it'll take a while. YEAH RIGHT!
-
TRA-LA-LA-LA-LA!!!!!! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ GREAT! We be cookin"!
Now, after it's all done, answer the questions it asks, and reboot, NO CD-ROM support, go into FDISK and select 'view the partition' then post back for everyone's peace of mind that the System is now....(drum roll please...) FAT 32!!!!!!
Then exit out, reboot, but this time say YES to CD-ROM support (have your Win 98 CD in).
-
Correction: shut down completely after formatting--much better. The n do the stuff above.
-
No can do....I was disconnected and couldn't get back. It's installing the Windows 98 as I type.
I followed the sheet. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ It's detecting hardware.
still want me to ype fdisk???
