Just double checked to be sure the HDD and CD-R are jumpered as Master--they are. Also while in the case, I reversed the cables or ribbons and each is now back on the drive where it was originally. The first time I did this was scary but doing it now is OK.
BTW, I reported earlier that I had not loaded the burning software that came with the new burner. I just checked and I did install the software--NTI CD-Maker 2000 Plus.

Suggest disabling the auto fix in scandisk. Set it to prompt you if it finds errors. It maybe hidding something that can be straightened out.
I have more than one thing out that was goofing things up. And scandisk told me exactly where it was. A bad file, whatever. Removed it, or fixed it.

Ok, I have disabled "fix it" in scandisk, re-ran it and happy to report nothing was found. Almost wish something was reported and then it was fixable then maybe I could get on to burning a HDD backup :( Right now, I don't know what to try next. I have umpteen blank CDs wasted and a few hours involved while wasting them but I don't mind either of these. Just want a full workable backup! I still kinda think that phantom partition that DI created is the culprit. How could I delete the partition IF you think I should try to do that? If that can be done, then maybe I would try another burn of my HDD and see what would happen.
What could I lose IF I can delete the "partition" :eek:

Don't remember who uses Drive Image 2002(or version 6.0--same software)but I need some thoughts on something that I have just looked at.
Open Drive Image>Create Image>Disk Operations. There is listed my one hard drive with the "phantom" partition. I can right click on the partition and I have the choice of either Delete or Label or Unhide the partition. (Could possibly even give it a drive name) What MIGHT happen if I chose to Delete? Any guesses? Is it possible that the partition(and my burning problems)will really be deleted like it never existed? I can't burn CDs to back up my hard drive so I am between a rock and a hard place here. What are my chances of success here?

Unhide it and let it be picked up by windows. Seems safe enough. Actually all the options are safee as far as I can see.
The error message of could not open image file 1810, deal with the hidden partition I believe, so Yes, I would select to delete that hidden partition. DI knows that there is suppost to be a image in it and can not find it thus giving you the error message.
Anyway rereading the error list, that is what I understand what the problem is.
Hi. I have read through this post with interest. I have frequently used Drive Image to create backups both to other partitions (hidden and not) and to CDR. The way I do it which works for me is as follows:
1) Purge the temp directory in Windows and other *.tmp files
2) Run Scandisk on the disk I wish to back up (Say C:)
3) Run Windows defragmenter or Norton Speed Disk on the the same disk
4) Run Drive Image using the Drive Image DOS rescue disks. I find that more reliable than from within Windows and anyway Drive Image has to boot to DOS to image the main system partition.
5) In Drive Image select the partition I wish to back up. I back up one partition at a time if I wish to back up more than one partition. Also, if one selects the drive one can get rather more than one has bargined for. i.e. hidden and other partitions being included and sometimes problems like the ones you have described.
6) Always opt for maximum compression.
7) Lastly, the last screen of Drive Image before it goes and does its stuff displays what it is copying and to where it is copying. In your case make sure that it is listing C: only as that which it is copying. The number of times I have reached that point and realised that I have selected the whole disk of normal and hidden partitions instead of just the one I want!
Finally, good luck. Keep at it and it will work.
As Train says, take it slow. I am always extra slow and careful when playing with disks and partitions.
I have used both Drive Image Pro and Ghost for some years now.
Both are essentially easy to use.
You should know that Drive Image Pro itself will not non-destructively re-partition your drives as mentioned in earlier posting. Partition Magic is the application from PowerQuest that will perform this magic. It will come in the package if you purchase Drive Image Pro. But don't expect to get it if you just have someone make you a disk with the imaging software on it.
Running tests on a couple machines to look at imaging time and image file size, both software packages again are very similar.
If you're looking for an all-around nice software package for multiple uses, go with Drive Image Pro so you get Partition Magic also.
Hookie, Drive Image PRO is geared to letting you use network drives unlike the basic Drive Image package. Drive Image 2002 however does have some of Partition Magic's function within it unlike earlier versions of Drive Image.
Hallelujah!!! This "could" be among the last threads to this long post. I know you just can't wait to hear the "rest of the story" so here goes my not so good explanation.
I deleted the partition that I referred to above. I didn't think it would really delete it from my hard drive and think I was right because the overall total of MBs(7,326)shown under properties for my C: drive remains the same since I let DI create that partition on my only HDD. After doing this, I removed the software through Control Pane and then reinstalled it--rebooting where I thought necessary--then successfully burned 5 CDs that I hope is my hard drive. On CD disks 1 thru 4 there are 592MBs and on the final disk there are 442MBs shown as properties for each disk. The total of these is 2,810 MBs. On each CD, the following shows when I click on properties: IMAGES, BOOTCAT BIN and then BOOTIMG BIN . Some other bits of info is also shown, I think. So Train, looking back at one of your earlier threads, I found the above file names and I should have a burned backup of my hard drive--I hope!
For some reason I kinda think that I have a backup of the partition even though I checked Drive C: before I started the burn but how can I know. A good backup of either should be okay because the partition is a copy of my HDD at the time it was made by DI--RIGHT?? And if that is true, I "should" be able to use "whatever backup I have" to restore my HDD. If if this is true, I should now be able to wipe clean my HDD and use my newly acquired backup burn to reinstall my HDD contents. I ask of you folks if I am interrupting these scenarios correctly.
I genuinely thank each of you for your input in helping to create this epistle and hopefully we have found a solution. And perhaps others have learned a thing or two here. I probably ain't through with you yet so don't run away :D :p ;)
Yes, you have a backup of the hhd for that point in time.
Now remember, that the stuff on those cds is compressed. So, what windows says that ae on them and the acual amount are going to be different.
Want to see what is on them, then use image explorer and take a peek :D
Now for the test, take the 2nd hdd, I think you mentioned one, fdisk it, format it. Just make sure the first partition is the same size. The clone C to it. Then reinstall the cds. Bet it works.
The clone is you just incase backup. ;)

Can't pass the acid test though. I only told about my one time plans to install a second hard drive but then CHANGED my mind. I only have one hard drive :( What now Coach? I would have had to ask for further assistance with understand this c/p of your last thread if I did have a 2nd hard drive: "Now for the test, take the 2nd hdd, I think you mentioned one, fdisk it, format it. Just make sure the first partition is the same size. The clone C to it. Then reinstall the cds. Bet it works." I wouldn't know how to make sure the first partition is the same size. Same size as what?
You don't owe me any kind of thanks but instead it I who owes you and the others who have sought to help me with this situation. Suddenly my problem is resolved. And I have to say that I never seem to have simple problems or simple solutions with my PCs.

EDIT: I guess it was only fitting that my 300th thread occured on a successful note! Forget the size of partition. I checked the properties of my C: drive on the first disk and it showed the Primary/Logical to be PRIMARY and the Partition Size as 7.15GB and the Used Space in Partition as 3.65GB and Unused Space in Partition as 3.51GB. The total of the these equals 7.16GB; close enough to the 7.15GB figure.:D

Well let us Just say 12GB for fun.
Now if you were to have, say a 60GB as a 2nd.
We would need to take the cluster size into consideration.
They are:
512 MB - 8,191 MB clusters are 4 KB
8,192 MB - 16,383 MB clusters are 8 KB
16,384 MB - 32,767 MB clusters are 16 KB
32,768 MB and above clusters are 32 KB
So seeing that the 12 has 8KB cluster sizes we could go up to 16,383 MB [16GB] for that partition without running into problems when we clone. But normally, I make it the same size, but that is just me.
Now if you clone say a 4KB cluster into 8KB cluster, well the only ways to fix that is to use Partition Magic and change the partition size, Ranish [free I believe doesit also] or Fdisk and start over.

I take it that I could now clean my hard drive and then restore?! I could then wipe away that phantom partition from my HDD IF it is still there. Right now I don't know if it is or not since I "deleted" it using Disk Operations as earlier described. If so, I believe it would be better to do that now since I have a recent backup.
BTW way, my hard drive is 13.2GB
