Could try Rain 2.0. Runs in the background. Be sure to use the 2.0 not the 1.0.
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Told you....the chant works. (especially if sung to the tune of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow").

I downloaded cpu idle and am going to let the machine run all day while I am at work....will post back later tonight on any changes I make....It seems to be fine since I changed the agp rate and set the cas latency to 3 instead of 2...will keep you all updated.
-
bios has hardware monitoring on it and I can check cpu temps there but I have downloaded motherboard monitor and sisoft sandra and neither show cpu or system temps. No big deal but things like this make me ask questions...

As I recall it, THIS is the chant :

I was sworn never to reveal the Secret Techie Chant back in the Monastery of the Sacred Ram Chip...if I were to reveal it or it's Mystic Powers over computers, The Initiated Ones would be obligated to seek me out to delete and fragment me...However, one of the "Lesser Chants" that was written in The Lost Annals of Techiedom, written in 1245 P.C., has NOT been forbidden. It goes like this:
"WhatInTheSamHillIsGoingOnWithThisGodForsakenComputer?C'monNowYouRottenPieceOfCrap!Work!"
To be chanted in 4/4 time and with much grimacing
-
Its the 4/4 time thing it doesnt really matter what you say its how you say it that counts....kinda like with babies you can be saying anything at all as long as you have that "comforting" tone all is well.....you have to make the machine really believe that if it does not work you will throw it out....kinda like a jedi mind trick or vulcan mind meld.....or something like that its a bistroism WAIT just a minute here what has come over me....now I am quoting star wars and star trek....better download the latest version of pc-cillin and knock out this virus before it does anymore harm....j/k

hey sarrkazztic,
When you tried MBM did you go through the setup routine, where the program detects possible temp sensors? I thought it didn't work at first when I tried it, then I read the directions https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

"I'm not a real doctor, I just play one on VDr!"
-
yeah dickster.....it usually has a setup screen that lets you choose what sensors are to be monitored...but in that pull down menu all this board shows is Custom....no choices of motherboard sensors.....I have seen this before under acpi in windows 2000 but I am running win98se so this should work kinda confused.

Ok, found some more on the BOMID.
Q: After installing a new hard drive on my Compaq, I tried to use the Quickrestore system CD that came with the PC to do a clean reinstall. But I keep getting to a part of the installation procedure where my screen asks me for a number related to a BOMID file. When I call Compaq, they won’t give me this number. What can I do?
A: When you installed your new hard drive, you lost a file called BOMID that contains info the software uses to verify what model your Compaq is (and to install itself correctly). This may also be a safeguard to ensure people don’t use Compaq’s Quickrestore CD with other companies’ PCs.
Sometimes there’s a reasonably quick way to retrieve your BOMID number: When the procedure asks for the number (or directly after you fail to give it one), the installer should offer you the option to continue. If you select continue, it should send you to a DOS prompt. Type uiabomwr bom id number at the prompt and press ENTER, and you may get the information you seek.
This trick may not work on some older Compaq models. If it doesn’t, you can always temporarily reinstall and boot the old drive to get your PC’s ID information from its BOMID file, and then reinstall the new drive and proceed with your installation. To get your BOMID info off the old hard drive, boot your PC with the Compaq boot diskette, but when your PC demands the BOMID number, cancel the procedure. That should get you to a DOS prompt. There should be a drive partition called N: which you normally don’t see or deal with. Type n: and press ENTER to get to this prompt; then type cd map and press ENTER (on some systems you may need to type cd tools instead of cd map). Next, type type bomid.txt and press ENTER a final time.
This should display some text with a line that includes “uiabomwr_201” (or something similar). The number (201, for our example) is what you need. Now reinstall the new hard drive, load your Quickrestore CD, and enter the number you got when it prompts you for your BOMID number. Visit Compaq’s Web site ( http://web14.compaq.com/falco/detail.asp?FAQnum=FAQ461 ) for more information regarding this method.

What sarrkazztic had there was technically a "lesser" version of one of the Lesser Chants--an abbreviated form. Just have to grit your teeth a little harder....The Master didn't really approve of the lesser-Lesser's, but we'd do them from time to time just to tease him...would get him so mad he'd start throwing bad RAM sticks at us.

So, this BOMID - is this something all preinstalled Compac machines are (still) factory equipped with, even my Pressario? And does this mean I can finally haul the QRCD out the window for good (frisbeeeeee - if it wasn't for the drivers on it..), since I wiped the drive after 4 months and reinstalled W98 manually?
Well, at least they had the decency of leaving the installation files visible in the options\cabs folder.. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

The BOMID is how Compaq Branded the CD to the Harddisk to install a particular profile of windows and drivers for a certain model.
Browsed mine and found three different profiles each a different Model of Computer.
Also so people would install on other machines. Fail safe you know.

Here is another piece of info.
the compaq i used to have gave me the same problem when replacing the drive. Finally found out that a new drive required a BOMID to be flashed to the harddive before it would be accepted by the compaq. BOMID was obtained from Cpmpaq site , where i provided my comaq model, etc. and obtained the BOMID install info. The BOMID is installed by using a floppy disk, and involves using parts of your serial number if I recall correctly...
Good Luck. It was very easy to install once I knew what to do, but it was a pain figuring out the Compaq website navigation

someone mention PC-cillin?
the readme mentions it won't properly scan on RAID arrays?
wtf? and this is a version which comes with a RAID capable mobo!
sometime in a dim past, a wise mountainman told me to ALWAYS read the readme, and this has led to many a unconfusiuorisation session with the mountainman.
