Operation Delta 3 - 007

Good Morning All, Just got in from a morning run, made a cup of coffee, and for some reason brought up VirDr on my computer and what to my wondering eyes should appear but The Master and the Delta crew aka the gnomes of knowledge aka those experts of cyberspace aka........ad nauseum (love that phrase). OK then -

DrMDJ, With the Maxtor Ultra ATA/100 PCI Adaptor Card installed, the blue end of the ribbon adaptor cable plugged into slot 1 of the PCI card and the other end plugged into the Western Gigital 40GB Hard Drive, there is no operating system picked up. Now to verify this I disconnected the hard drive power plug and got the same results. There is no other hardware attached but the one hard drive.

Sarkazztic, your post implied the same thing as Train and I were discussing and that is a difference of configuration in the software or the actual procedural steps to congfigure and bring up online.

I posted a question on that and to review it, should you intall the PCI card, then the adapter cable to both the PCI card and harddrive, then patition and format after which you install the operating sysem.

In this case I installed the hardrive and got it partitioned, formatted, installed the operating system, and then tried installing the PCI card. It acts as though there is an incompatability when the PCI card is put in.

The computer is rock solid in its operation. Without the PCI card, perfect operation except for the last 8GB which is there but can't be used - with the PCI card, no operating system is detected.

Jaack, nothing for you yet as far as results from the things you wanted me to check as that is new areas for me and I have to study what you mean. It is not the way you explain it as I understand what you are saying but I have to put that together with the how to. What I am trying to say is do not change how you're explaining but be patient with me as I am learning and attempting to gain a greater depth of knowledge.

The reason I take the time to ask questions and explain what I'm going through is so other people reading will know they are not alone in this quest for knowledge which all of this crew has and are willing to share. I keep reiterating the fact that if a person reading our thread doesn't understand something that he/she should ask a question. Aw shucks, DrMDJ forgot something. I have but three PCI slots in this computer. The first one is open, the second has the modem card and the third is where I put the PCI card.

OK, I'm back up and swaping the PCI card to slot 2 and the modem card to slot 3 gave me the same symptoms as before as well a notification no modem was detected. Swapped everything back and left the PCI in and brought the computer back up. The computer decteced the PCI card and told me I didn't have a harddrive attached to it just before the Windows logo showed. Now I'm going to do a little more investigation.

It is interesting that when the harddrive is attached to the PCI card you can't load the drivers for the PCI card.

When I attempted to install a Promise controller card (to attach a Zip drive to it), it gave me all sorts of problems on boot-up. The only thing I could think of was the "BIOS" on the card wasn't compatible with the system BIOS. Tried a Siig card and it booted right up. No changes were made to the system BIOS. Yet both cards use HPT drivers. Odd.....thought the "slot2" trick might work (assigned IRQ). https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

I'm confused again. With the drive attached to the ultra card do you or don't you get any message about no drive being attached to the card? Or is it that it just complains about no OS? If the card's bios sees a drive attached that is one thing. If no OS can be found that's another.

If you boot to a command prompt and do a DIR against the drive (assume it is C if only drive in system) what message do you get?

DrMDJ, When the Hard drive is attached to the ATA 100 card through the Adapter cable that came with the card this is what you see on the monitor.

1. Detecting PCI card then

2. No drives detected

D1
D2
D3 then

3. No operating system installed

This is on three different screen shots.

Assume you just left out an display for D0 (ie. D0, D1, D2, D3). Anyway...

Try moving the cable to D2 (as the master on the 2nd IDE connector on the card).

Another thing might be to try a regular ide cable (just as a test).

I did have the latest drivers for the card and I tried to flash the bios but it kept telling me that the file was incorrect..the card itelf says promise ultra 66 but the flash program did say fastrak....I thought that was weird.....I tried a while back to put in a different scsi card in a computer with a via chipset and never had any luck......and since all I wanted to do with the ata66 card was hook up a zip drive in my new machine....and it says you HAVE to have a hard drive attached to it.....and since my motherboard supports ata100 hard drives I have decided to put the card and the zip drive in the new machine I will start building tuesday.(gaming machine) I did not want to put 1 of my 2 ata100 hard drives on a ata66 card and reduce performance of the drive...when I finish this other machine this week I will have 2 other machines up and running that I can put the zip into and not have to put it in my own personal work station....It does tick me off that I cannot figure out why this card or the previous scsi type card would not work on via chipset boards....the new board is an intel so this will be even more of a science project than previously anticipated

PLEASE, I am getting desparate.
the adaptor card normally picks up the drive AFTER motherboard BIOS has finished showing its data on screen.
in the motherboard BIOS, you MUST set to boot from SCSI. or A: >> SCSI
btw, the motherboard BIOS drive detect screens won't show no drive on this card. (it don't show the card, period...)

during POST screens, you can see the card detected as a mass storage PCI adaptor, and be given an IRQ...)

anyway, after setting boot order, it's reboot time.

and, now YOU HAVE TO ENTER THE CARD BIOS (ctrl + H) to select the drive you want to boot from.

I just got done looking at this.
you MUST select that you wanna boot from the card, in the card bios.
option at bottom of the highpoint BIOS/RAID screen is CHOOSE BOOT DISK.

in your particular case, I would STRONGLY suggest you connect that spare blank drive to it. (other drive disconnected)
because then you would not run the risk of messing up your good system.

now, if that stupid compaq don't give you option to boot from SCSI, you gotta live with 32 out of 40.

I just pulled a drive which was maxblasted on another system and connected it to this highpoint.
the drive translation was correct.
I done it with a forty and thirty Giga drive formatted on non highpoint controller.

your case is different, since this machine BIOS does NOT have native support for over 32giga disks.

catch 22
if its jumpered to limit itself to 32, it will show as 32 ,even on highpoint.
therefore, prepare the blank/new disk.
and clone that older system over once you got the blank drive running on highpoint.
