Understand that I recommended that board to Queen_of_Hearts because of it's stability, RAID capability (if so desired) and, as DrMDJ mentioned, the Soft Menu in the BIOS is quite flexible for overclocking if desired). Jumperless for ease of installing--wanted to spare Q-o_H) https://discussions.virtualdr.com/. Yes, there are better boards out now, but that was probably one of the better ones for her purposes. She's got a "killer" machine now primarily because of all the freakin' tweakin' she's been doing. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Alas, the way technology moves these days killer today is geriatric tomorrow.
Correction Bistro. Some of her posts a while back indicated she had squat. The kids had the killer machine. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
PS. Haven't you learned? Don't defend your choices/actions Bistro. Simply say, "I've been building PCs for 34 years. I haven't been a perfect man, I've made some mistakes. But out of respect...". The Condit approach.

Hi DrMDJ, In answer to your previous question, I did not decide on two hard drives because of the RAID factor but because what seemed best to us last October and what we could do with this setup. ie the various options open to us. As I said earlier, I am flexible if I have to be to a point. We did a lot of study and reading and comparing that was recommended to us. The only way I will change the list is if the replacement is significantly superior to what is on the list.
As far as what I wish to do with this unit. It will be used to store knowledge and maybe a game or two such as Myst. Which is one of the few games that intrigues me. I will program, develop web pages, run a business, and anything else that strikes my fancy. Train and I are on the verge of some as yet unnamed projects. I will explore a myriad of computer possibilities because it's just there. Besides my family, I can't decide which is my next love; computers or flyfishing. I'll let you know if I ever find out. Realize that a computer is complex and many people specialize in this or that. I want to know as much as possible about it all. But this first. Think of the people that touch our lives through computers that would never have happened otherwise. Computers and VirtualDr brought all of us together and we are truly blessed because of it.
Oops, wandering. Sorry.
BT is a creation by not just me but all of us. By asking questions I can and will have a better unit than otherwise possible. Why because all of you are helping to make this possible from the knowledge and experience you have.
The budget not including the burner and digital camera is a thousand dollars + or minus 10% and the usual cost overruns ( https://discussions.virtualdr.com/) associated with a project of this scope.
This ensures that the most bang for the buck will be realized.
Gonna check this thread and see if I missed anything. Also save it again in its entirty.
Be back in a bit. Need a sandwich too - just got home and what did I do first. Check this thread. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Thanks corrected the post. I was quoting bistro and telling him that I have had no problems with the via chipsets and AMD.
The Hercules video card, he had helped me fix. Seems the fix has to be used on some of the 64MB cards also. Get the hack and back it down to keep them from overheating and locking up.
I got the Coolbit hack and the 1101 drivers. Sure helped my situation.

The only reason I'd go with PIII is if I already had a MB and just wanted to upgrade the processor, but I'm frugal. The reason to buy AMD, price ,upgrade path, performance ,there have been problems with Soundblaster products and VIA chipsets, thats why I went with a good quality onboard audio(KK266Plus)and the VIA drivers are alot more mature nowadays so there probably wouldn't be a prob anyway. If I were set on Intel ,the PIII would be a good choice but its upgrade path is limited and an equal performing Athlon is going to be MUCH less $$$.If the RAM you have is PC133,you would be getting a VIA chipset if you went AMD,as the chipsets without problems,ALI Magik 1,AMD760,and SIS735 chipsets use DDR ,there are exceptions.

GG1,
Now it's sounds like I was confused/wrong. You aren't looking to redesign/rethink the system. I thought you were. Wasn't trying to talk you out of the original spec. If that's what you want and are comfortble with... I think you have a pretty good idea of what its strengths and weaknesses are.

Goose if you are considering AMD you can find a (AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1.4GHz 266MHz Bus Socket A PGA Processor-OEM Version ) for 107 dollers or a (AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1.4GHz 266MHz Bus Socket A PGA Processor-Retail Box Version with Heatsink and Fan ) for 126 dollers. Both have a 10 doller shipping fee and they can be found at http://www.newegg.com/

Hmmmm..."the Condit approach" eh?
OK....Here goes: I've been building systems for some 15 years now. I've put together some real screamers, but some were just plain ole vanilla variety---I've had a few that had technical problems after building them. But I feel I don't really need to apologize for that. I was and have always been innocent of any wrongdoing. It wasn't my fault. I had nothing to do with that girl....er...those systems breaking down like that. I love my present system and have always been faithful to it. (Except for that one system I built for that flight attendant...). That is all I have to say; except I wish the media would quit exaggerating and blowing my involvement all out of proportion...even if it is true....

Train,
I got side-tracked with building the new machine (MYST runs fine in hardware mode there, though) and was planning on getting back into it. I'm only about one-fifth of the way through. If I can drag myself away from all these forums I'm going MYSTing again. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
BTW...damn glad you helped out Caeser with the freezing problem...otherwise he might have blamed me for it...LOL. I swear I didn't drop a slice of that pizza inside the case... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Hi WG34, Interesting thought about the openend factor. I looked at the Abit BX 133 from the standpoint of dependibilty and performance only with the idea that if it failed I would be able to find a replacement equally as good. The Pentium 4's bother me as I think they were rushed to market because of some of the problems I have read people have had. I just felt that this was a good combo but if any of you know of any others please carry on since things can and probably have changed in the almost a year since we did this list.
Since I am going to have to order, looks like, we have until this weekend to look at more options and the pros and cons. This will give others a better feel for what has to be done step by step and what to look for.
I have a small time handicap also at the present time. The company computer's upgrade crashed and we are now working by hand. Don't mention backup, because I did. Wrong subject to bring up. Oops. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
