OK The disk we made at bootdisk.com for a Win 98SE gives me this error.
Non system disk or disk error. Strike any key when ready.
We knew no better and made one from a Win 95 machine using my 98 CD and it actually booted. Said Microsoft Windows 95 (copyright bla bla bla)
Then a:\>
So I guess I have to find a 98 SE Machine.
Mosaic you would have to email the file to Texas Angel. Then she could copy it to a floppy and give it to me. Would that work ?
I have one more avenue here to look and see if I can get my hands on a Win 98 machine.
I'll check that now.
I was glad it at least read something. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
OK THanks Mosaic I'll email it to Texas Angel's and get her floppy drive to make me one. Can't do it on here. Be right back.
Thanks, Mosaic1--you're a goddess.... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
did you get a boot disk with your new harddrive, you can fdisk and format with that
No flames to you, misery (you meant well https://discussions.virtualdr.com/), but that WD boot disk that comes with the hard drive has tools on it, but not what you need to fdisk/format the drive---it has an "overlay" program (EZ-Install) that you DON"T want to use. HOWEVER, it also has the ATA drivers for the hd, which we'll put on right after Windows is installed (if necessary--probably will be).

Belay that second half of my post above---the mobo CD should have better drivers for that. Think we'll use those.
I sent to TA and etracted and put on a floppy. >>NON SYSTEM DISK or disk error.
Why ? Because her computer is a windows 95 ? Can't even make a copy of a bootdisk?
Why did the floppy made from MY Win 98SE CD on a Win 95 machine in add / Remove Make boot disk, boot to A:\>
Gots to bumo to see the haps. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Got two different versions there. Some of the files are from the system, others come off the CD if necessary. You need to use a 98 machine to make that disk. I'll have to ask again just to be sure...when you power up the machine, is the floppy light burning constantly?
Let me ask something else: did your mobo come with any device cables (i.e. a floppy cable)? If so, use that cable, not the original one.

Leaving work now. Will be back in an hour (or more--depends on traffic).
OK. Just a suggestion about this fiasco. If i am not mistaken, windows 98 SE comes in the form of a bootable CD. Now if your Bios supports it, then you should be able to change your settings (under setup) to choose which device to boot from first, or what order to boot. Try booting from the cdrom, then you can mess with your floppy later. Hope this helps.

Queenie, I'll make a deal with you. If you keep my kid (and Robbin) the next 6 weekends, I'll do a backup and upgrade to Windows98 SE and you can come make a bootable floppy from here. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

TA...You must be jesting... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
OK I even went to Princessdi and tried to make one but her CDROM would not accept mine.
SO I did get to bootdisk.com and make another one from her machine. Still non sysstem disk.
The only one so far is that one made on TexA's 95 machine from my CD, which brought up the A:\>
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Mosaic, Did that too. Tried the brand new floppy drive in the Old machine and it's not running in the OLD machine. CDROM still screwed too...I can't get it to work there. So I just put it back in the new machine.
WHY can't you just go BUY the idiotic BOOT DISK???
Welllllllll, ya can't blame a gal for trying. Personally, I thought that was an excellent deal.
I'm going into shutdown. Time for a nap. Later tater
Ok...you say that disk brought up the A: prompt, right? Did you type: fdisk (after that prompt?). Try it. It might bring up the program. HOWEVER, if the program that comes up does NOT eventually say "Would you like to enable large disk support"--then it's the wrong one. Just hit Escape and power down. Post back with results (as if I had to say...)
Ditto--Try Mosaic's idea also. On the boot, you should get the choice to enable CD-ROM suport or no (choose NO). Then you'll type: fdisk (after the A: prompt), then it'll ask you if you want large disk support. If you don't get any of those messages, then what you got there is a 95 boot disk--won't "work" right. If you are getting those msgs, then you're in business.

Texas Angel
Good evening and welcome aboard.
QOH
When you unzipped the bootdisk, did you try unzipping to a floopy and not to a folder.?

Train: It was established on the Win 98 forum a long time ago that one "floopy" equals 200 floppies. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ But you may be right on the zipping/unzipping---nothing like having a stuck zipper....
Tick...tick...tick...tick.... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
ATTENTION KMART SHOPPERS
I'M IN! I stopped by the ECP Computer place....batted my eyelashes and he gave me the boot disk. It's working!! Be back in a minute.
Sounds like the Queen is roll[oops] moving on again.
I have 3 posts in limbo somewhere, plus servers went down in Oregon and Washington. Just got back up. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ The coffee was posted earlier. 200 is all. Might boot it at that https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

QOH: Take that boot disk back to the shop and have him make you 200 copies--put them in several safety deposit boxes in different banks--I don't wanna go through this again.... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
FOLLOW THOSE FDISK/FORMAT INSTRUCTIONS TO THE LETTER--- https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Greengoose1: Are you there? We're gonna have to start a new thread here--this one's taking too long to refresh..... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

F disked went fine, got out and rebooted, went back to without CD support but when I type format it says bad command or file name. I typed
format c: /s
Right? I tried a couple times and same message.
Make sure you are putting the space in between "c:" and the "/s"--check your spelling of "format" Are you at the A: prompt? Take the disk out and reinsert a couple of times, then try again. If this ain't working, then either the disk is bad, the dirve, or the cable or all or a combination of them. (I think I'm going nutzo here...)
Go back to fdisk and choose the option to view the partitions. If it says you don't have any, then you partitioned incorrectly.
Do you have that fdisk/format sheet with you?
Checked the spelling and the spaces. Surely this disk is not bad. Cable is the one that came with the motherboard. I rechecked all the connections when I put the floppy drive back in from trying it in the OLD earlier. Just now saw your post about trying the 95 disk we made from T.A.'s computer using my CD.
Should I try that disk?
Will be back https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Yes I have the sheet. I'll go do that now. BRB
Check my second post up there about checking fdisk again. I think that in a few I'll start a new thread--this one's so long it is not refreshing very fast.
