Boy...talk about "phone tag".... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Good Evening https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I have added the 2.01 compliance to the list for the 300watt power supply, so I won't forget to ask that. The Enlight towers I got to see today only had 2 or three bays. They said they had never heard of a Mid tower with 5 or 6.
I went back and looked on line and they certainly do !
Enlight 7237 ATX has 6 full and one 1/2
In Win A 500 has 7 slots

As he will be workin in DOS his question was "using a 95 machine with the 98 bootdisk, can I fdisk and format a hardisk for my new 98SE computer.
Sorry for misleading you above.
Said I would try to find out.

Thank you, Don't know fiddle about that business. Kind of seemed right, but lack of knowledge there.

OHHHH....THAT'S what you meant https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Ditto to Mosaic's post---you betcha.
QoH: That's because those dorks are just looking at the 5.25" bays on the front. When discussing cases, one includes ALL the bays: the 5.25's (big ones), the 3.5's (floppy, ZIP) and the (internal)hard drive bays.
So, some of them you can't see, but they count. Looked like only two square holes on the front to me ( big enough for the CD Player and the Floppy Drive) and two half ones underneath that. That's not enough if CD Writers are installed in the case, too. Or are they an external thing....separate box of it's own ?
Wouldn't wanna have to get out the reciprocating saw and make my own ! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

CD writers most are internal and some are like mine usb external. hp 8230e
Works great for me.

Perhaps an explanation of terms is in order.
(That's the proper way to say "Let me tell ya"). Speaking of the case, when we say internal bays, that's literally inside the case i.e. the hard drive bays. The external bays are the ones you see showing on the front--the 5.25" bays (for CD's, etc.) and the 3.5" bay or bays (for floppy drives, tape or ZIP drives).
When talking about drives, such as CD-ROMs, ZIPS, hard drives, etc., and we say it's an internal drive, that means it goes into the PC case. If it's an external drive, that means it is designed to stand alone outside the case and plugged into one of the ports in the back of the computer. (Some folks like to purchase external drives for their portability--can take them back and forth to work, etc.). Does this clarify?
[This message has been edited by bistro (edited 12-08-2000).]
Then bays and slots are not the same thing ?
What I was looking for was how many holes in the front there were for the things to poke out of. (terminology https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ )
Things like the Cd player and Floppy drive. Wouldn't I need more then two holes in the front ? Or maybe this computer has three 5 1/2" holes but the cover doesn't let me see how big the Floppy is. Probably doesn't take up the whole space behind the cover. One has nothing in it, but looks like something could be put there. Really it's one big hole and they look stacked in there.
[This message has been edited by Queen_of_Hearts (edited 12-08-2000).]
Q0H: That case that you saw sounds suspiciously like a mini-tower case, not a mid-tower case. You want at least 3 large (5.25") bays, and 1 to 2 3.5" (small) bays in the front (external bays, right?). Even if you don't have or plan to have components right now to fill them all, you will in the future and you'll need the room to expand. Those bays that you don't use have a panel that fits over it to look nice and neat.
The dude said it was a Midtower, but I wondered because it didn't have as many holes as the picture I had seen of what I wanted. Right next to it was a really tall one, I assumed was the full size. It had plenty of holes in it.
Of course, he's the same one I asked about the de-magnetized screwdriver the other day.
Two other places I went, nothing was out of it's cardboard box and no pictures.
I think the dude was sadly mistaken and perhaps needs a little refresher course. Did you ask him if there was a matching pair of shoes and purse to go with that case? He sounds like he'd probably try to sell you those if given half the chance.
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ I forgot to ask him about the shoes.
I did discover one thing today that is probably true. (not from him) If I buy these things on the internet and I have trouble with a componant, is it a big deal to get replaced ? Not like I can run back to the store and get another one. Do they take returns on electronic stuff. I know places who won't if the wrapper is off. Is this anything to be concerned about.
EDIT:
Didn't see you there Mosaic,
I will do that. But are the cases on these ready made ones their own models ? I mean, Do all Compaq's look a certain way and all HP's look the same ?
I have not really looked at any new ones, because I had no intention of buying one. This is not a tower I have. It's short and flat.
Oh good ! Another shopping day for me ! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
[This message has been edited by Queen_of_Hearts (edited 12-09-2000).]
Circiut city, at least here, requires that the people to be somewhat literate in computers. Maybe elsewhere? You will find a general sameness to most of the towers. So, if you find a layout you like, get the make and model numbers and post them here. Say what you want, if need be I will run up to Federalway and check it out, of find a picture of it on the web.
Can go from there.
------------------
SMILE
Ok Thanks. That's what I'll do then.
I was really trying to see exactly what I would be getting, if I ordered one on the net.
I know this is not the most important part of the computer but I want to get the right thing. I was not convinced what I saw today was it.
Hopefully the sales people will be knowlegable at my Circuit City too.
If you want expandability, go for a 3-large bay, one to two-small bay mid-tower. Like I said before, even if you don't have enough components/drives to go into all those bays right now--that's fine; someday you might.
Make sure it has at least 2 internal bays where you can put the primary hard drive, and a future secondary drive.
Anyhoo, good ideas above from Mosaic1 and Train. Have to call it a night now...se you on the morrow.
P.S. Mosaic1: Whatever it is that you promised jtmurphy, I want video and/or 8x10 glossies.... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Morning All, Just caught up on the posts. Just when I started to feel comfortable with towers up pops more information. Will be out of pocket until Sat. evening. The time has come for the once a year marathon known as Xmas shopping.
Will change to a new section when I get back.
QoH - All we gotta do on purchasing this hardware is take it one step at a time and follow caveat emptor to the letter. We have an ace in the hole as you have already demonstrated in your wanderings which is VirDr. I woulda liked to have seen some of those guys faces you talked to.
Bistro, the eagle landed.
To all of you this has been another great week for me. Thanks. Later
Thank you Mosaic. I understand now. I forgot we already established something else was called a "slot". I'll watch what I call things (hole/ slot/ space/ place/ void ) https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
OK Then when I read on the specifications "slots", that was refering to the places the cards go into.
"Bays" is what I was concerned about. Where I was looking at pictures didn't have the number of bays on the spec. list. When I saw slots I thought that was what I was looking for. Just have to look and count.
Thank you Train. Good links. With pictures. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ I don't have time to look real good right now, but I will after while.
I have to work today... I'll pop in.
See ya
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Train,
Got plenty shoes to hit um with !

Slots>>motherboards; can also refer to the holes in the back of the case that accomodate the motherboard.
Bays>>Cases;where the drives such as CD-ROMs and hard drives are mounted
Slot Bays>>sections of a casino set apart for mechanized gambling
Bay Slots>>the gambling machines found in 'Slot Bays'
Holes>>what occurs in people's pockets who enter 'Slot Bays' to play on the "Bay Slots'
Found a jtmurphy post and here is part of it.

https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ bistro,
Casino's !! Oh No ! With all this cash burning a hole in my pocket, don't give me any ideas !
I gamble enough with my checking account, as it is. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Mosaic and Train,
Thanks. I'm fixin' to go check out these new links.
Check in later.
I just look at the link Mosaic, Great pictures !
I also have looked into this case again to see about the modem and
how it fits so I'll know which one of those Motherboards I'll need, bistro.
This Motherboard is "folded" at about 2/3 of the way so it is mostly horizontal but 1/3 is vertical. The cards are in the vertical part, so they are parallel with the motherboard. Five black slots (The ISA slots ?)about 5 1/2" long are in this part. Two white slots about 4" long are in between those.
One of the five black ones, which is empty, has an extra little bitty 1/2" piece added to it.
Both the sound card and the modem are in black slots. The modem's pins are on the long 6" side of the card (6" X 3 1/4" for the card itself )Nothing in the two white slots or the other three black slots.
On the flat part of the motherboard are these little short long cards (look like about one inch tall and four inches long) and there are six slots (white >the DIM slots ?) and all six slots are filled up. Another strange looking thing that looks
like a curry comb, only black plastic with it's teeth sticking straight up.
I evidently don't have the AGP slot.
On my way now to look at your's Train.
[This message has been edited by Queen_of_Hearts (edited 12-09-2000).]
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Wow! What a description, QoH. After careful examination, research and analysis, it's been determined what you described is an old, old motherboard. Please take that into account--the new one you'll get will look pretty different, but the same basic make-up. That's also an old modem you got there (judging form the size)--consider getting a new one. (DO NOT get any modem that says "Winmodem" on the box/ad. That means it's software-driven, rather than hardware-driven , which is much, much better.)
Sound card needs replacing also. I'll say again--the Soundblaster Live! series have stood up as #1 in review after review. Can't really lose with any of them. Just choose one of the models within your budget.\
Yes, those black slots are ISA slots--they're getting "old hat" now. The white ones are PCI--still around and kickin'. But that one with the "extra piece"? HOOOOO BOY! You've got a VESA slot! I don't know anybody who uses a VESA anymore...(not trying to make you feel bad here, mind you...).
Girl, we are gonna have fun building you a new one...'bout time. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Post what you've got for a CD-ROM--we'll see if it will need replacing (you might count on that though). So far, you're gonna need all new components: sound, vid, modem,hd, RAM, etc.
Probably will need a new floppy drive, if the one you have is the original--may be ready to bite the dust.
Don't worry---we'll take all this one step at a time and in chunky-chewy bite-size pieces. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Ha! Had an interesting afternoon--demonstrated it pays to shop around. Went to the local military store and, as usual, wandered back to the computer section. Happened to look in a glass cabinet where they keep all their RAM sticks. They had 32mb of regular EDO for $115!!! I asked the guy there about it--told him you could get the same thing just about anywhere else for 20 to 35 bucks. "Gee, I dunno...I'll look into it"--then he just went onto his business. Sheeeeesh! Well, one of the customers evidently overheard and started asking me my opinion on some of the systems/components they had there. "Yep, this is good. Nope, that sux"...etc. etc. In the conversation, I mentioned to him about VDr; specifically about "Operation Delta"--he got real excited and wrote down the URL. Well, another guy close by overheard that and wanted the URL too. So, we may be getting "visitors" soon. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Hhhmmm...that might be true....let's take a poll...(ok, ok...any Floridians here are invited too). On a scale of one to 10, how much fun are the readers/posters having here? Be honest (or at least tactful... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ ).
EDIT: OMIGOD...Page "5"??? Ok, forget the poll--this one's WAY too long! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
greengoose1: I'll let you have the honors of starting (dare I say it?) "Operation Delta 4".

Thank you. But I wonder about that "excellent" part (honestly). Sometimes I get in a hurry and end up muddying the waters rather than clarifying (take a gander at some of my answers in this forum https://discussions.virtualdr.com/). Will watch that in the future. I make no claims to be an "expert" and I welcome any other comments; even (and maybe especially) if they are corrections to my posts--I'm not too old, nor too thin-skinned to be 'educated'.
Well, I was going to wait for greengoose to start the new thread.
I am having fun and learning, at the same time. Enjoying all of your senses of humor.
I appreciate your time, knowledge and experience. Thank you. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

BISTRO,
You are doing an excellent job. I do understand what you write. I have reread the entire thread, several times. The second or third time I read it, it makes even more sense. So, keep doing what you're doing (...please https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ ). It's working.

Yep it's old. In fact, I probably shouldn't alter it...... reduces the value of antiques, ya know. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
hummmm Wonder if I should have it appraised ?
You're right Mosaic. There'll definitely be a fight for my turn. Especially if it is capable of these fancy new games.
So this sweet little computer gets to live after all. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I'll just have to save up more money for the sound card and modem.
I really do not care about hearing all that racket from games. I can be thrifty on the sound card.
I know better than to get the win modem. But how about those external modems? Are they more expensive, better or worse, or just different ?
Train: You were THAT? Ho boy--did you get to play with any giant toys in the sandbox? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Tooka look at that case--looks pretty good, except for one thing: no removable side panels; you have to take the whole case cover off to get inside. To be honest, that design is a little dated. A lot of cases nowadays are designed so you can remove either side separately--makes it easier to get in there. I think that's a feature you need to be looking for.
QoH: No real appreciable difference between internal and external modems (external modem owners would probably refute me on this https://discussions.virtualdr.com/). Really a matter of space and portability.
Hey boys and girls---this thread is getting pretty long (Nooooo, really?). If greengoose1 doesn't show up soon, I might take the unabashed liberty to start Operation Delta 4 on his behalf...
Hi All, Busy as usual, I see. Leaving Dallas now for home. Just happened to find a computer to get on. I have a different perspective of these "retail computer stores" than I did before. Sort of matches QoH's looking trip. Gotta go. Be well.
Bistro, Caught that, go ahead. I won't be able to for another couple of hours or so. Didn't realize how bsy we are getting. Later
