Belarc (freeware) -- I've just discovered this program and it is great.
Great for referring to when you format and re-install.
Like I'm doin' now.
Linda's note regarding software which messes too much with other things, is a good idea. Maybe a new thread???????????

The author Ryan Geiss makes some excellent plug-ins. He's recently made another good one called MilkDrop which is great also, but I still like Geiss a little better.
Anyway, if you really want some cool visual plug-ins for Winamp check those two out. I also like the ones by Wild Tangent with the characters that dance to the music. They're just so cool.
By the way Moonrover, I always thought the saying was:
Winamp...
It really licks the parana's bass.
Thanks MAHMUD603 for suggesting Mailwasher. Works fine except---My only problem with the program is that some of the incoming mail will go into Mailwasher while some will go into OE. Been happening all week. How can I get all the mail to go into Mailwasher?
Thanks

Only have mailwasher open on toolbar anytime you have OE open mail will go there first even if mailwasher is open, 90 % of the time I only have mailwasher running and sometimes while i am reading my mail with OE open incomming mail will go directly to OE , so only leave mailwaher running, and OE when you are reading or sending mail ,(close OE after that.)If you leave OE open the mail will go there and bypass mailwasher..
Untick the check for messages in th options menu of OE to stop it downloading automatically.
There is another circumstance, which accounts for this even when you have unchecked the d/l messages on O/E.
Let's say that I only have MailWasher open (O/E has not been opened on my desktop), and I click on the check messages button. After I have determined which messages that I want to d/l and which I want to delete or blacklist, I then click "Process Messages". This command opens O/E and starts d/l the messages from the email server.
However, if your email server receives a messages during this "Process Messages" process, then it will also be downloaded. I have had this occur several times and I don't know anyway to prevent this. After all, how would MailWasher know which messages you have OKed for d/l and which you have not.
Typically, only one or two messages get d/l this way, if you are only d/l 8 - 15 messages. Obviously, if you are downloading hundreds of messages over a dial-up, then there could be more.
I am going to send a message to the MailWasher Support team to see if there is a fix for this problem.
Cheers,
Linda

I've been lurking in this thread for a while without replying - you've given some great suggestions here guys
My faves are:
System Maintenance:
SiSoft Sandra
Aida32
Belarc
JV16 Power Tools
Spybot S & D
Memtest86
If anyone has an Intel chipset this is a must - it really makes a huge performance improvement:
Intel Application Accelerator
This is a nice freeware bootloader for anyone interested in multibooting:
XOSL
The best Java Virtual Machine:
Sun JVM
For Windows XP users:
MS Powertoys for XP
I also love Partition Magic, but for people who can't afford it here's an excellent freeware partition manager:
Ranish
For anyone using the NTFS file system:
NTFSDOS
(unfortunately, this freeware version only allows reading of files - the expensive paid for version is required if you need to do more than that).
And last, but definitely not least, I'd like to give Nero Burning Rom a big plug. I bought version 5.0 back in late 2000 (and it wasn't expensive - about £30 I think), and since then it's been upgraded 7 or 8 times. They've made every single upgrade available free from their website, where other companies charge an arm and a leg for a point release that's little more than a bug fix. I call that outstanding customer service, and I think they should be applauded. Not only that, but it's the best burning software there is anyway. It's available as a 30 day demo:
Nero Burning Rom
Have to agree on Nero one of the better written applications these days.
As to mailwasher I find it needs more work by the designers i.e. the mail time out can`t be turned off so half way through writing to a forum you find an error message on the screen has erased all my hard work [no touch typist here more like a two finger typist!] and it keeps trying to add mail to its bounce list from my requested weekly updates, most annoying.
And, of course, I forgot the most important program of all - the one that's saved my life on more than one occasion - Norton Ghost. I tried Drive Image, as a sort of belt & braces approach, but I had real problems with it. Ghost, on the other hand, has never let me down once since 1998, when I first started using it.

Anyway, I'm not worried about breaking any records or anything really. It's nice to see such a great response to this thread, and I really hope people will get a lot of great info from it.
This thread has been in the vdr newsletter for the last 2 weeks.
Did you get yours?
And Yes, I think folks are getting stuff they need.
The program is working fine..One point however ,--MailWasher does not recognize if there is an attachment to a message. Is there any way to program it to show an attachment to a newly received message?
Thanks
well with this thread having 136 (now 137) posts we arent too far behind and train my god man ur post count has got to be some kind of record
WHAT!! That 144 reply thread is about to be overtaken. Oh well, Train and I--and the others in that thread never thought about a record. One thing can be said tho, I am/was the benefactor in all of that and Train was my COACH and stuck with me until a solution was "found". I even sandwiched a week's cruise in there while all that was going on. This is a "rocking board" and I, for one, greatly appreciate the people who give of themselves to help others.
RegShot v1.61a
RegShot is a small registry compare utility that allows you to quickly take a snapshot of your registry and then compare it with a second one - done after doing system changes or installing a new software product. The changes report can be produced in text or HTML format and contains a list of all modifications that have taken place between snapshot1 and snapshot2.In addition, you can also specify folders (with sub folders) to be scanned for changes as well.In version 1.60+ you can save your whole registry in a *.hiv file for future use.
dont u hate it when u go through ur favorites and u dont recognize the name of the favorite u have well this program not only makes it easier to organize ur bookmarks, it also shows u a thumbnail of the page u do have to pay for the full version

I'M BACK! :D
It's been many months but I'm getting gitty for computers!
The best Proggie would be WIN MX File sharing Program, and MIRC chat program, I mean how can you survive without IRC? and it takes almost Zero bandwith too!;)
Burt, in MailWasher, go to "tools>options>column order". You can get rid of "account" and substitute "attachments" so MW will show if the message has an attachment.
I also recommend not having OE automatically d/l mail when it opens. If MailWasher fails to delete the unwanted mail for some reason then OE opens, it'll d/l all the mail you don't want. I don't even let the "process mail" function automatically open OE. I wait til it's done it's job for sure before I manually open OE.

This will shortly hit #1 BUT the "post your desktop pics" topic was actually split in two, 127+35 = 162 posts :)
I would have to say that Jasc Paint Shop Pro 6.0 is the best. Even though the newest version is 7.0. AD-ware is another program I like to uses to once and awhile remove spyware from my computer, even though I know that some of the sites I visited off and on, is spying on my system. I see that alot of users here uses this program alot. Only thing I hate about networking my computer is, that there are programs out there that won't let you uses thier software fully cause of firewall, one of them is MSN Messenger. You can't file share or web cam on a home network, which is kinda funny cause Microsoft promotes home networking back when Windows ME came out. Now why would Microsoft distrube a multi messerger service if they won't let people file share or web cam on a home networking? So I got the yahoo and ICQ messager to cover these areas. GameSpy.com is a great gaming software, not sure if they uses spyware though. Also it a must that everyone uses a anti-virus protection software, I vote for McAfee as my protection. Even though they had alot of problems with the 6.0 version for the WindowXP, they have made up for it in 7.0. I prefer WinZip as my zip & unzip file utility. WinRAD just doesn't cut it for me. Also if your a big music fan, get SPINNER.COM radio, which I hear now is run as NetscapeRadio. This is just alittle mix of my selection. I have a few more I like to mention, but I think you guys and gals all have your favor! Catch yall later!
Burt,
DVOM is right. I have been using MailWasher for over a year now and love it.
DVOM said:

I would amend DVOM by suggesting that you do what I do. Go to "tools>options>column order" and check all of the fields. Then organize them in the order that you want to view them on screen. This way all of the information, which MailWasher captures about an email message is available to you, during your preview process. You can always change the order of the columns, if you discover that there is column that you want to see without having to scroll over to that specific column.

You must have a lot of the same programs I have. :D
Regshot is a great little program. Freebie too. A+
Couple of others I might mention (both free):
Whisper32 (a Password/link manager - great if you visit a lot of sites where you're a member).
TotalUninstall (Logs changes made to registry, files, etc. when installing)
Both are available at Pricelessware!
Great thread but it has some way to go until its world record :-

That's alright, like I said before, we're not really worried about any records here. Just hoping people benefit from this thread.
On that note, I'd like to add GlobalScape's Cute FTP. It's about the best and easiest FTP client I've ever used. They also make other great software such as Cute HTML.

Not one but many little programs are available for free from www.sysinternals.com
I use a number of them especially "process explorer" which is an advanced version of task manager. It shows every process, its handles and dll's being used at any given time. Very useful for troubleshooting.

Here's another cool little free program that proves itself to be very handy under some circumstances..
ghostmouse
It records mouse movements and clicks and plays them back at variable speeds repeatedly until you turn it off.
I use it to click a link to get refreshed stock quotes while I'm not sitting in front of my computer.
Running_on_Wheel, I hadn't ever heard of any major security flaws in CuteFTP, but if there are any let me know. GlobalScape has had a very good history, so maybe they've fixed any problems they've had in the past.
I used to run an FTP Server, so I'll promote the FTP Host software I used (and many of my friends swear by). It's called War FTP and it's freeware! It's easy enough for beginners to use and also provides advanced tools as well.
I was going to say WebFerret from FerretSoft.com, but I changed my mind when I saw someone else'e post.
WebFerret is great for Internet searches, but I could actually live without it if I were forced to.
On the other hand, I would certainly die if someone took away my Partition Magic, by PowerQuest
That little puppy's rescue disk has saved me from innumerable sessions of pounding my head against a wall.
ZoneAlarm (don't be home without it (free)
yProxy (brawnylads.com (free))
Netscape (free)
EZViewer (galttech.com (free))
HJsplitter (free)
THE Renamer (free)
KaZaA Lite (free)
And if I didn't mention this, I'd get my ass kicked:
ICQ (I met my wife of 2 years there... no ****... (free))
there are more, like MailMaster (for spamming the spammers, regedit and msconfig, PictureIt!, just too many to mention...
I see this thread made STICKY
Congratulations

OK, not sure if anyone's mentioned Eraser and XP-Anti-Spy.
Heidi will clean your disk(s) and XP-Anti-Spy allows you to disable all those pesky things that are defaulted to in XP (Windows Messenger, Automatic Updates, etc.).
Both free BTW.
Anyone know where you can d/l HDValet for free? 'preciate any info.
Hi All,
Just ran across another great little program called rjhExtensions. It enhances the context menu in Explorer by allowing;
Path to clipboard:
Copies the path of the selected folder or file to the
clipboard.
Shred File(s):
Overwrites and then deletes the selected file or files.
WARNING: Shredded files cannot be recovered.
Rename Files:
The Rename Files extension allows you to quickly and
easily rename multiple files in multiple folders.
Encrypt File:
The Encrypt/Decrypt extension allows you to easily
encrypt and then decrypt any file using a modified
version of the powerful Blowfish encryption algorithm.
Duplicate File(s):
Creates a copy of the selected file or files in the
same directory. The duplicate files will maintain the
properties of the original.
Copy directory list to file:
Creates a file named "dir.txt" in the selected directory
which contains a list of all files, their dates and sizes,
in the selected directory.
Print directory list:
Sends a list of all files, their dates and sizes, in the
selected directory to the default printer.
You can get it here;(it's Free too)
