Basically, Open DO2002
The first page to open has a box in the lower left that id you check it it will so show again. DO NOT check anything and click ok.
On the right side click copy disk.
On leftside click OPTIONS and there I only have checked is skip bad sector checks.
Click finish
On the "You must select one or more drives to copy"
Click the click here to "Select Drives screen
> means click, OK
1st delect Source drive
> finish
"Select Destination"
> Finish
You will get a Warning about the partition will be deleted
> Yes
Reboot notice
> Yes
Now it does its thing.

You have basically verified what I got from reading those pages on DI2002. I almost got the nerve to just go ahead and do it but with where we stand now, I didn't want to mess up.
Any comments at this time about what "position" each of my HDDs should occupy. See my 4th thread back. I won't have time to give you a report on my anticipated success with the drive copying tonight before you before you turn in---if you've got a 4AM day tomorrow. If the copying goes well, I may just try to put this bucket of bolts and nuts back together some time tomorrow.
Oh yeah, I don't know now where that thread is but you mentioned at some point that I may have a do a clean install of??
Is that still true and if so, a clean install of what?

None , except DO not do anything to the old C:\ for at least a week, 2 is better yet . Better safe than sorry I always say.
So, if there should be problems, they can be corrected without much lose of stuff, if any.

What a display of software programing. Amazing to say the least and I am extremely happy to report that Drive C: and Drive 1(D) now show the properties to be the same. Well, within a few bytes which I assume is only natural. NO change to Drive E, of course.
USED SPACE on Drive C: is 4,096 fewer bytes than Drive D: and
FREE SPACE on Drive C: is 4,096 more bytes than Drive D:
I have not checked anything more but surely all files/folders are accounted for and I assume the copying of C to D went flawlessly. Looking at it while it did it's job appeared to go fine but at the end it automatically rebooted and I was afraid something had gone wrong. I didn't realize this was the final step in this process.
Train, my humble thanks to you for taking the lead in these many threads and meeting with success after such a long time working with a novice such as I. I will put the puter back on the floor and when you give me the final OK, I'll then perform the last steps of switching the drives or WHATEVER you tell me to do and close it up. :D :D :D I can't think of why I would need my cd-rom but it is not hooked up because D drive is on the Secondary IDE as Primary until you decide which way you want me to go regarding the 2 HDD drives. I am in no hurry.
(Will I ever know if that burn of C: was/is good? Short of losing both drives, I should hope to never have to use them and then know if they are good or not.)

Now, that you have achieved success :D set the hardware up the way you want to. Have at it.
Now the copy is a one time thing per hdd. Or per format of hdd.
The next try will hide the darn partion for you. :(
Yep, had to jerk a couple out using Partition Magic 8.0 Then remake the partition and format it. Nope did not lose anything, had it saved on the network :D
Now once you get everything, back in place and things get calmed down and only then, there is a way to test those CDs.
Make your 2 floppies as you may need them.
Then Image C:\ to the logical which is empty.
Then use ImageExplorer to check out the image until you are satisfied with what you find.
Now when you are all set, go into Bios and make the cdrom the first boot device, save and exit. That is so when you boot to the cd, it is the first thing seen and it will want to start the install, go through the install and when done check it out everything that you burned to the cd should be there. If everything checks out, you have verified your Restore CD Set
Now if you want to get C:\ back up to date, you can image the Logical back to the C:\ and there you have it. Also, a good time to learn to use the floppies, because if it will not boot to windows, guess what you need.
I'd wait like I said for a couple weeks to wipe the old C:\ , A just incase though. Now that logical, that is up to you. :D
OOPS, the slight difference, all it did was tighten up wasted space is all.
I have printed your last thread and think I will just put those steps on hold for your suggested 1-2 weeks. That will also give me more time to decide in what order the 2 HDDs should be to be the best solution for me.
I feel sure that I will have at least one ;) question to ask(per paragraph). I think my BIOS presently has Drive A booting first and followed by cdrom. You want me to reverse those and if so, am I to always leave them set up that way. I suppose this simply speeds up access to the cdrom and this suggestion is for this purpose only. Would I ever need to change them back? Never changed anything in BIOS!! But then, I have done a bunch of "new things" since I started this thread; most successfully though:D :D
Trying to decide just how important it is to prove the backup that I burned to CDs several days ago.
Having the floppy boot first and then the cdrom is fine. The only time you need to change is when a hard drive is set to boot before the cdrom, which isn't too often nowadays. No sense touching the bios settings if you don't have to.
Buf the main thing is that you have to have the cdrom before the hdds if you ever have to boot from a cd.
And AS I have a likeing for boot cds with all sorts of stuff on them, I have the cdrom first, floppy 2nd , then my hdds. Just my preference basically even though it adds a couple seconds to the boot time.
As Gerdog stated "No sense touching the bios settings if you don't have to."

Thanks for those words of thought and since I don't like meddling in BIOS and the potential wrongs that I can easily cause, I am leaving those settings as they are. There might be a few seconds to be gained or lost but neither are worth trouble.:D

A couple of ignorant questions now though--I have those 2 floppies for DI and have had them since day one but then you say to image C: to logical. Is the E drive the logical drive? Don't LOL!!

When ever you restore a image or clone, the first thing it does is format the partition, then install what ever is on the cds in your case. Now a few days have past and any new email you have recieved since then, documents made, programs you may have installed will not be there. That is the reason I said to image C:\ to E:\ before you did anything. Then try the cds.
And after all of that is finished and you check it out, yes what ever work,installs that you did after that 10/30 date will be missing. Now you have two ways to get it. The easiest way is to restore the image from E:\

With all the great help from Train, I have just about finished this thread--but not quiet yet. I have the new HDD now as Master on the Primary IDE and the old HDD as Slave on the ribbon with my CDRW. Working very well but I have a few things yet to do and then I will post here again.
i went to drive image 4 due to its ease of use after giving up on ghost which i found to be confusing &, also, restored w/di , easy & quick.

but, I wonder wether drive image can be made to clone a "damaged" hard drive.
I mean, ghost can fail when there are damaged clusters on a hard drive, or when it has to extract from an image with bad files (CRC errors), but it can be made to clone a bad and copy from the bad image too.
to do that, ghostpe -fro or ghost -fro allows you to copy a damaged drive.
(the fro option can also be set in the options panel... )
(and yes Train, I too hate having to key in the licence in PE)

jaak, was cloning a small hdd to a single partition 80GB hdd using Ghost 2003. Well I figured I would use PM8.0 to resize the cluster sizes. But those 4k clusters were already 32k per PM 8.0Quote:

Never run into that! But, I think it is very good myself. NTI had to take a backseat when it comes to making CDs

a little something about the email thing
because I never know when I will format a drive, or put a good image on after I totally messed up my system (when you try things, shyt happens) I have set my email so that it leaves mails on the server for about a week.
this is done in account, advanced settings.
I also do not use outlook express after a clean setup
(darn thing hardly lets you into options when you set up your account, and it immediately connects... that is one disadvantage of cable... of course, you can block it by using ZA...)
anyway, I use outlook instead, and that lets me configure it before I download my mails of the last few days...
(plus that I regularly save to pst file on other drive)

I saw its use, and got the full version
Then , because I needed to run trials on win XP, I got me ghost 2002 some months ago.
I really ought to try that direct burning thing.
But I cannot make automagically restoring CDs with the 2002 version because its a PE version.
(that licene key thing gets in the way for that)

Finally figured out what you did. DI in the programs folder has a window that is not in the bootdisk [what DI calls a Rescue Disk].
Using that you either used the Initial Backup Wizard or the Setup Wizard and that is what made the hidden partition on your hdd. Yes, that is what it takes to be able to do that with one hdd in your computer.
Now to rectify the situation:
Go into DI2002 and make the Rescue Diskettes. Be sure to label them.
When ready boot to the diskettes and when the First window opens, got to Tools in the menu and select Hide/Unhide.
When the next window opens select the hidden partition [single click the line] and then drop down and click UNHIDE, verify it has changed to unhidden and Exit.
Now you will see where Partition Magic 8.0 will come in handy.
Reboot using the pm floppies.
When the GUI opens, select the * that is logical and unhidden,
go to Menu and select Operations, the select MERGE.
The Merge Adjacent Partitions opens.
Type in a name for the Merge folder.
I used DUMP for a folder name as that is what I will do with mine. ;)
Apply and it will take a while but that will get rid of the hidden partition for you.
Then when you get back to windows after rebooting, find that folder and in my case, after checking its contents I dumped it.

Anyway, he has now got rid of the PHANTOM partitions on both hdds and everything is now back to where it is suppost to be. Running great.

This is a slide presentation that Gene Barlow gives pertaining to the Best Practices for HDD Management. The products that he demos are PowerQuest's Partition Magic and Drive Image.
IMO, these are the best products on the market. They are well documented and they are rock solid. It is also worthwhile to upgrade to the latest version.
DriveImage comes with DataKeeper, which will do incremental data updates. This feature needs to be deployed.

This link shows the HDD management methodology, which is built around having two hard drives. The OS always has its own separate partition on the master drive. The data partition and the programs partitions are on the second HD. The OS is backed up to the 2nd HD and the Data & program partitions are backed up to the first HD. That way, if you lose a HD, you are not out of business.
If you are running multiple OS's, you are limited to a maximum of 3. The 4th partition on the master HDD is for the Data & Program backup.
The slides do a much more thorough job of explaining this.
