Not sure when I can get back to this. Do yourself a favor:
1. Download ISpeed. Install the program, but don't run it yet.
2. Go to Device Manager>Ports.
Select each of your COM ports in turn and hit Properties, select the tab "Port Settings", and make sure the "Bits per second" is set to at least 57,600 or 115,200.
3. Run Ispeed. Hit the button on the right for "Optimal". Let it select the settings.
Now, see that little "notch" setting? (RWIN).
If your modem is 28K, slide it over to 2144.
If it's 33K, slide to 3216. if 56K, set it to 4824. Set the "TTL" to 32. Leave all the rest alone for now. Hit the Save button (on the right). Answer "No" to the 'History" question. Exit out and reboot the computer.
4. Connect up again and see if there is a speed increase when you come up to the forum.
If for some reason you can't connect, go into Safe Mode and uninstall ISpeed. Reboot.

I had to do a little ammending to your instructions. I already have iSpeed installed but all I ever did was hit the Optimal button and forget about it.
I did all the steps. Did the Device Manager first. None of those were set for the ones you told me to. So I redid those.
Then fired up the iSpeed and set those settings. But didn't hit the optimal first since I already had originally. You think I should have anyway?
It seems a little faster filling in.
Thermal paste is silicone
It's not on the CD but I put it on a floppy disk, for the new one. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

When I go to MY COMPUTER stuff, there is a little "pie" that shows up when I highlight C, showing what's used up and what I have left. Wonder if the "pie" will take up the whole screen with this 20Gig hard drive ? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Size stays the same, but the unused portion will be larger by bunches.

QOH: Is that a 56K modem? IF SO(and only if so), go to ISpeed and change the MTU (Max Transmission Unit) there on the left to "Custom" and put the number 2144 in the box. Save the settings and reboot. Again, if the modem should fail, go to Safe Mode and reset everything with the Optimal button, reboot, and post back. See if that change makes a difference.

Yep. I sure do. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Just praying all my pieces arrive on time...no delays. Some are coming from Califonia so they will take a couple extra days.

You be knowin' https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I found the floppy for the CDROM in this computer which is the same brand (Mitsumi) only this one is 24X and the new on e is 48X.
Would they be the same drivers?...just in case?
-
The old ones might work in a pinch, but don't count on it. Won't need them just to get the CD working to set up Windows if you use the Win Startup disk. Can install later, if needed. I'm betting Windows 98 will recognize the make/model. May just need to update it with the new drivers later.
-
That's what I was worried about. Can't install Windows without the CD.
I made the fresh Windows bootdisk already. And I have the Ultimate one for future, too.
I was trying to get organized today. I have those drivers for the printer, too. But I'll leave it unplugged 'till I get going. Then install it.
Hoping the CPU gets here tomorrow. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Speaking of drivers--does everybody concerned have them ready for install? Win 98 is fairly good at recognizing hardware, but sometimes has problems, especially with printers. (Have I said this before? Sounds familiar) https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Recommend NOT having a scanner, printer, external devices, etc. hooked up when installing--can be added later. makes Setup go a little more smoothly. Good to have all drivers stowed away somewhere--also, you may see some "conflicts" in Device Manager after installation; but a lot of these are solved by just installing the latest drivers from the floppy/CD for that device.
Just don't panic if you see them. We can work through them one at a time.
EDIT: https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Now lookee there...see? Getting on the same wavelength...
