Well, I have plowed thur the mb user's handbook for the first time. Heavy
Learned a lot about bios though.
That computer, shown above, takes a special overweight license and equipment to transport it.

Ref. fdisking and partitions. One point I need clarified. Is it only 4 partions on a computer or per harddrive. [Color me confused]
Hey, 110 degrees is gotten In places like Texas. I know I have sweated it out a few times. ;0

Train: Neither, as far as I know. The only "4" limit is IDE devices (unless using an ATA 66/100 PCI controller card). Will check into that.
-
I know about the 4 ide devices https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ thanks to you and the work around, why the mb I have.
But wanting to stay with 8GB partitions and with 2 each 20GB harddisk, that equals a minimum of 6. And I have been bouncing trying to find what I had read and where.
Even printed out M$ manual for fdisk.

I now have the mb in the case, match up to all 9, yes 9, holes and everything looks good. got those on board speaker wires, switches on the front panel hooked up. Talk about small writing. Had to download the manual to suppliment the written manual in my hand. Magnified it in adobe reader, then matched it on mb. Worked out OKAY.
Well, got to go on a recovery mission. KIDS!!

Hey, here's another "tip" on that S500 case. On the intake fan housing, you'll see some slits on the sides--once the fan is in, take some 3M 6969 tape (black 'duct' tape) and cover them up. Accomplishes 2 things--cuts the noise down a little bit and directs the air flow better through the housing. Use the same tape to route all the loose wires-don't cover any connections--makes it look nice and neat.

Morning All, Just checking in. Having to get some things done in the Honey Do area. Here is a picture of a computer I found on the internet. My Dad gave me one like this many moons ago. It is a log log duplex slide rule and on my desk as we speak. Later. Have a great day.

Yeah...I remember the thrill I had when they came out with the slide rule version that played "Pong"....
-
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ hmmmm....don't remember my slide rule having "pong", even tho it was top of the line. I looked very intelligent carrying it with my books. ( https://discussions.virtualdr.com/no....no pocket protector)
Don't think I ever learned what to do with it...it did have a real nice leather case. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/Got some already bistro (3M 6969)
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/Won't be a bugger to undo all those wires if I should have to uninstall a componant later, will it ? How big is the bundle of wires ? My Brother in law, who uses my shop frequently, left behind some black corregated looking tube with a split in it he uses to neaten his installs. Could I use that stuff?

Anybody remember this? http://www.togger.com/photos/Q7%20Co...ama-little.jpg Back to chores. Later. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

I was on Texas Tower 2, the night number 4 went down from a hurricane. 200 miles seperated us. Scary. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ http://www.togger.com/photos/texas_tower.gif

oh greengoose,
That would be frightening. Looks like only three legs on that thing to begin with. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Slide rule , Picked up one the other day and could not remember how to do the mantisa thing for a while.
Was in a engineer school , heavy on math, and heard that the TI-30 had just dropped in price. Run down to the bookstore to check it out. It had dropped from $185 to $150, so they got to keep it. 2 years later, I bought one for $8. Nice difference https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Besides, $150 was about 1/4 of my monthly paycheck.

Train, That was a deal on the slide rule. I am posting this picture of the AN/FST-2 to show what one of the early military computers looked like. It took alot of rather large cases for a computer that could only process several thousand bits of data at a microsecond rate. It was made up of vacuum tubes, resistors, diodes, capacitors, and the like and required huge amounts of power. I want you all to think for a moment of the strides that have been made in only fifty years and that have bought us to the point we are at now. At your fingertips resides the current knowledge of mankind. And to think we are buiding a couple of computers or so to use this knowledge. There really are no words to describe this really. http://www.radomes.org/acwrons/photos/equip/fst-2.jpg

Greengoose: How did you get a photo of the inside of my den??!!?
QoH: That split tubing does come in handy to tidy up the interior. (Will be picking some up tomorrow). Can use the smaller stuff to "bundle" some of the wires and the wider stuff to carefully "fold" some excess IDE cable into (usually the first 6-8 inches starting from the IDE connectors on the mobo)--won't be able to do all the cable naturally, because of the second connectors. But if you plan it out logically, it'll help with getting better airflow; especially past the processor.
Not sure if I mentioned it before, but recommend also getting a "tornado"-type slot exhaust fan--fits onto any rear slot space (but will effectively block one of your unused PCI/ISA slots.) Placed mine facing upwards toward the video card--exhausts heat away from the card--not only cooling the card down more, but keeps the interior cooler. There is another type of slot fan that has two little fans--one exhaust, one intake. Don't bother with this one---not very effective.
Another "mod" to the case: Placed 1/4" gray air conditioner filter foam over the front intake grill and the grill work next to the hard drive cage; helps keep the dust out and I see little to no effect on the air intake.
Next project: Add a CompuNurse thermometer on the front to monitor the case temp.
EDIT: Almost forgot--was thinking about this today...ya'll might want to pay a visit to your local Radio Shack or any other decent electronic hobby shop and pick up a tube of thermal paste--just need a small tube of the stuff. It's for mounting the heatsink/fan assembly onto the CPU. Just need a very slight amount (a small "drop")--helps to fill in the microscopic gaps on the the heat sink for better contact.

The boot disk you commented about the other day. You stated it had a great copy utility in it for coping from disk to disk. Could you elaborate on it please. Looks like I may need something like that on a older 95 machine.
