I've just about decided. This little Pentium I sure has been a good one. For me and it's previous owners.
One of the articles I read made reference to different types of computer owners. Ones who just have to keep up with the Jones', ones who upgrade every two years and those who hang on until forced to upgrade. I'm probably going to be one of those that hang on 'til the bitter end (....obviously https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ ) unless this is, like you said, a lot easier than I think. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I'll wait on the monitor so I can have as much as possible to put into the system.
Is Celeron just another model of the Pentium or is that a different kind of processor ?

Both are made by Intel. Some have described the Celeron as "the poor man's Pentium"--but that has been proven to be not quite true. The "Celly" (cute techie slang) has proven itself to be a real contender---also a favorite of overclockers because you can (for example) take a 533 Cel and overclock it so it runs at 800 (but let's not open THAT can of worms right now). For all practical purposes, the Celeron is a Pentium, minus part of the chip cache. I won't go into any more detail than that; not necessary for you. Techs like to compare speeds, caches, benchmarks and the like between CPU's (makes for a lot of lively conversations---actually fun), but most home users wouldn't be able to tell the performance difference between a Cel 533 and a Pentium 550--or could care less for such things. Most Pentium-based motherboards will accept both Pentium and Celeron (there are some weird ones out there that are CPU specific--kind of rare). You'll need to read the specifications as to the range of chips the particular mobo will run. Real easy---the ad, box or dealer site will have that info.

Ok...looked around a bit and I have a couple of recommendations for mobo/CPU--will give you avg. prices too. Both are Intel-based mobos. One takes a 370 Socket CPU, the other takes a Slot 1 type. (Now don't freak out, I'll keep this simple...). 370 socket CPU's have been around for a long time--the chip is designed to lay flat, inserted into a socket on the mobo that looks like a Saltine cracker with a big hole in the middle--edges full of small pinholes--is that graphic enough? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/. Then Intel had an idea to put their chips into a black casing, which in turn is inserted upright into a slot on a mobo that looks much like the slot your vid card is inserted into (Slot 1 type). Both are still being made. Heard a rumor that Intel was possibly considering discontinuing the Slot 1 type and making all their chips 370's. Remains to be seen. Anyway, one of these mobos is Socket 370, the other is a Slot 1 type. Both are excellent and won't be "obsolete" for quite a while. You simply match the mobo with the correct type Pentium (or Celeron). (prices given are average)

Which one of the Celeron's is comparable to the Pentium III 800mhz CPU ?
For only 5 bucks difference in the motherboards I'd almost have to go
with the Abit, since it is the 370 Socket. Even if it is just a rumor.
None of this stuff is heavy so there can't be that much in shipping and handling.
Then I'd just need the hard drive, video card and the case, since I'm using my modem and sound card, CDROM and floppy drive, and this monitor(NEC), and the mouse. Probably need a new keyboard (this is a Compaq ...will it work?)
Then add the CD writer later. And the monitor.

The Cel 766 is the closest to the PIII 800. But I'll let you in on a little secret....ssshhhh...something for FUTURE reference;don't try it right away....
The Cel 766 can be overclocked to over 800, and that Abit board is considered one of the best "overclocker" boards around. (HOWEVER, if you overclock, the warranty's void!). Just keep that in the back of your mind for the far-flung future for now.
One other thing: If you have an ISA type modem--the Abit has only one ISA slot available, and it has to be a short ISA card--a long one won't fit into it because of some LED lights in the way--a very small design "flaw". (Do I need to describe to either of you the diff between AGP, PCI and ISA slots, or find a link for you?)

DIMM slots: Where the RAM "sticks" are sitting.
Motherboard: That big green or brown square where all those gizmo cards are sitting on.
CPU:That flat thingy sitting on a white square (or in a slot) that has that "cute little fan" attached to it--usually close to the RAM.
Cards:What you've been plugging all those wires into at the back of the computer (sound, video, modem). Found sitting upright on the motherboard. Each has it's own "slot", which brings us to....

They are for your "cards" (see above). Your number and type of slots may vary according to what motherboard you have, but generally all motherboards have 3 types:
AGP slot--the newer mobos (lazy techie slang for "motherboard") have just one of these and are for the "newer" AGP video cards. Make sure your new mobo has one. Usually brown or beige in color and is the closest slot to the CPU.
PCI slot(s)--those slots all lined up right after the AGP--white in color--you may have 3 to five of these. Sound cards, older vid cards and newer modems can go into these.
ISA slots--black in color--may have one to three of these--older "legacy" slots--not much used these days, but still around in most mobos to accomodate slightly older modems and older sound cards, etc..
*Some mobos have an ISA and a PCI slot "sharing" the same position and opening in the back; also the same circuitry on the mobo--I won't go into any more detail than that--no real need now.

That's right ...Cel and PIII prices are a bit haywire right now---it's weird. Cels used to be way cheaper than the P's. Prices on PIII's are dropping in anticipation for the P 4's coming out. That's why I always suggest folks to wait a litle while to get a brand new piece of hardware...6 months down the road, the price usually drops considerably---a somewhat consistent trend in the PC market.

What type of slot is your modem sitting in? (Probably it's a PCI modem if less than 1 yr old---that's good).
