At the risk of sounding sarcastic, Databases don't get much easier than Access. The core of every database out their is the Tables where all the records are stored. Learning good table design is the key to a good Database. Try going to Element K and subscribing to their journals, they're worth every dime spent.Quote:

You know, this has actually been a thorn in my side for a long, LONG time. I'm a system analyst and programmer by profession, and have built private and commercial applications since 1981. Now, I'm not vain enough to claim that I can write a better version of an OS than M$, although I do look at Linux source code quite alot, and I KNOW that MOST error messages come from the OS level, not the application level... BUT: Every application that I have EVER written, that has error handling, reports these errors in a simple, English language, understandable manner.Quote:

The weird thing is this doesnt seem hard at all. Is it not as simple as a database of the errors deciphered in english that is accessed when an error occurs,,, crossrefrence the crap they give and return an english version??
Sounds to me the hardest part is going to be research based (finding the truth about the errors and what they mean).
I figure I could write this fairly easily but honestly I dont have the time to do the research for what will ultimately be a free program...

I agree with the you. The research is the real time-consuming effort. This would be true, if every error code had only one possible cause but as we both know, there are lots of errors that can have multiple causes or they are the result of a particular sequence of events.
And it just gets lots more complicated from there but I agree with you that this is something that is needed. I have even made the suggestion several times to Microsoft.

There is a program out there that will do just that in a way, It's hasn't gone public yet and I don't know when it will. I see this on a computer sales show at ShopNBC they have a piece of software that finds the problem and walks you through stages to solve it. I got the name of it and found the site if you care to visit,but you can't buy It, or not that I can tell. (http://digitallifeline.com/dll/)
There was previous post that wanted a program that shows what is running and I realize there are many but I like this one called Autorun- ( www.sysinternals.com ) You can highlight an item and have it take you to where it is located at the registry or it will Google it, that saves a lot of time. On that same site they have more free programs like one I noticed ( rootkitrevealer scans a system's Registry and file systems using sophisticated techniques to look for clues that indicate the presence of rootkits.

I wish that there were a program where I could input 3 columns from a spreadsheet. The three columns would be First Name, Last Name, Email Address.
The purpose of the program would be to validate each email address and produce a report (list) of all of the entries that failed the email validation test.
SBC Communications is my ISP. I tried to send an email message with 205 email addresses. But I kept getting two error messages, which was that an email address was bad. The second message was that I had too many email addresses on my email message.
When I got an error message that one of my email addresses was not valid, I knew that something else was afoot.
Apparently, SBC will not allow an email message to be sent unless all of the email addresses are valid.

Work on it, people. But like Office. Have the “Pro” at a ridiculously expensive price. Have the “Academic/aka poorest of the poor” reasonably priced.
So I can afford it!!!

CRBell, GoToAssist isn't too bad price-wise, and has been an invaluable tool for our support desk. We used PC Anywhere a couple of years ago as a standard, but found GTA cheaper to implement because the per-user licensing was only for the support staff, whereas PCA required licensing fees on both the end use and the support staff. Those fees had to be repaided with each new PC/OS since the PCA versions we'd use on a Win 98 machine wouldn't be compatible with XP and so forth. And GTA gave us a volume discount.Quote:

I would like an Email Subject Renaming program. People send me important, useful tools or information via email, and the subject reads stuff like "Here you go" or just "Fwd:" and does not describe what that email contains very well. When I shuffle it off to a PST, I put it in a logical folder, but the reason it's there is not apparent from the subject line. I'd like to be able to right click the message and rename the subject. Any thoughts? (Outlook 2003)
