GG1 take a look at this then..Problems booting into an existing OS (Win95/98/98SE/NT4.0/2000) after the installation of a Ultra 33/66/100, FastTrak 33/66/100, or EIDEMax/II card
After you install one of our PCI/ISA IDE controller cards you suddenly discover that you cannot boot in the Operating System anymore. If you move the drive back to onboard it works just fine, but not on our card. This is because of Drive Geometry issues. Each controller can view a drive a little differently. This can be an issue for a new controller, which loads the Master Boot Record (MBR) and then has a problem translating it or the Operating System boot record.
Symptoms
-Following the BIOS post and the loading of the bios for our card, the system displays Invalid System Disk or Operating System not found.
-Following the bios post and the loading of the bios for our card, Verifying DMI data pool and or updating ESCD will appear and then the system will hang.
-Following the bios post and the loading of the bios for our card, Verifying DMI pool data and or updating ESCD will appear and the system will hang at a flashing cursor, either top or bottom of screen.
-Windows 95 or Windows 98 startup bitmap will appear and then the system will freeze.
-The system will report unable to load or locate IO.SYS, MSDOS.SYS, COMMAND.COM, WIN.COM, etc.
- Problems occur when loading the registry. Such as corruption being reported or Windows Protection Error involving CONFIGMG (Windows Configuration Manager).
- The Operating System starts to load then drops to a C:\> PROMPT.
Possible Solutions
Performing a SYS of the C: drive (Win 95 and 98 only) will restore the operating system boot record and transfer the system files to the boot drive.
Restoring the Registry (Win98 only) may be necessary if the Registry actually became corrupt during the boot process. SYS C: drive before restoring the Registry.
Reset Data Configuration (ESCD) -To Reset the ESCD you must enter your System Bios and then locate the option. In Most BIOS's it can be found under PCI/PNP Configuration, but this will vary from board to board, especially on boards with a Phoenix or AMI Bios.
*Some translation problems are so severe that a clean install of the Operating System (Restore MBR, repartition, and format) will be the only Solution.
I would have pasted the link here instead of the text but it would not let me do that for some reason....

Hiya greengoose1:
I'm doing just fine. Thanks so much for asking. Thought I'd interject a little humour, to show I was indeed still trying to read along. Thank you for the decipher code. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Know that I'm your biggest fan as you build this new computer. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Jaak....please know I am just teasing.

Thanks for info Sarkazztic. Will check it out.

Daizy, getting closer to getting started and as you watch ask any question that comes to mind about building because that's what this thread is all about - to go where no man has gone before, to see what no man has ever - oops verily verily I say to you I have been around Bistro to long. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

...and thus did the feared Bistro corrupt his followers...and they did drink of the bitter wine... and they did follow in his ways. Even as to speak as he spake. And the Greengoose was sore afraid, as a babe in the wilderness did he cry out..."What have I wrought in this land?" And the Delta was silent as they awaited his approach...for Bistro was near...

And Bistro, coming to the River of Ignorance, split the waters with his babbling (for the force thereof was unbearable) and walked on the dry river bed over to the Delta. And seeing no one there (for it was very early in the morn), he pitched a tent and perchanced to sleep. And the Master appeared in a vision and spake to Bistro, saying "Why hast thou come here, Bistro? Didst thou actually think that someone would be here at 4:30 in the morn? Or that they would even CARE to listen to thee?" And the master, giggling loudly said, "Verily, thou hast proven once again unto me that thou art totally bonkers. Quick, go hide thyself. When the day breaks and the Delta people come forth, then show thyself to them and act as if thou hast just arrived also, lest they thinketh 'What manner of man is this that babbleth in the night to no one in particular?'". And as the vision of the Master faded away, Bistro saith to himself (for there was no one in particular there to sayeth it to), "Surely I have seen the wisdom of the Master and will obey the vision. That, or I just gotta lay off taking NyQuil..."

Hi jtdoom,This is a new Motherboard, not been out long and I think we are the guinea pigs for it. A very good board if and when you can get everything working right with it.
ECS K7S5A sis735 chipset with original Bios. A newer Bios give us more tweeks in the bios.DDRram and SDram (can't use both at same time)256DDRram this end.Wont boot if set to 133/133 need a new bios for that. Changed settings this morning as it took me 6 tries last night to shut down, kept either hanging at 'closeing down' or I would have Blue screen of death.
Todays settings are (fast/2T/6T/3T)100/100
this is also a 266FSB as far as I know.
Sorry if I sound dull but we all can't be as Bright as you lot. This is an Excellent Forum,Keep up the Good Work, and THANKS for all the Help from you all. yours, Dennis

scarecrowdr: Normally I wouldn't recommend a BIOS flash upgrade, but in your case it may benefit you. Might consider it.
-
Goose,
If the hard drive is not identified as being present (forget OS) when on the Maxtor Ultra card then the issue is not one of translation.
Just to review... You have the Maxtor hard drive alone (nothing else) on the ultra card as a single-master on the first ide channel on the card. Correct?

The WD hdd was set for single [single master] and trying to install windows , got no hhd detected. The same was gottten with CSEL [cable select]
But the darn thing works just fine on ide as witnessed by GG1's post.
Mine did the same darn thing https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ and his is a year newer.

sarrkazztic,
What bios is on that ata66? Did you load the latest (I think 2.00 build 18)? And the drivers you have are the latest (160 build 36)?
Are you sure that is a true Ultra66 and not it's sister, the FasTrak66?
Although the Ultra66 is suppose to provide cdrom support, I have seen and heard of cases where a cdrom would in fact not work on it.

GG1,
Perhaps try moving the Ultra card to another PCI slot.

I have removed the card, but it was working. Then again, I installed SE clean on the harddrive [single]. My Compaq disks would not install on IDE or the card! GG1's installs on ide and runs fine. But will not switch from ide to the card like mine did.
At present the Compaq [for household peace] is back on the quantum hdd. Also, I needed to help someone and could not remember the compaq way of doing it. So, reverted it.
