"Upgraded" my brother-in-law's Aptiva a few months ago. The Library of Congress is adding an additional chapter to the book "Profiles In Courage". Finally wrestled the freakin' riser card out of the thing and it had a label under it that said: "There now...aren't you glad this isn't a Compaq?"

Got a Presario 1½ years ago, incl. a restore CD. I still haven't quite figured out (not that I've tried that hard..) how it works. Click one of these icons...and nothing happens, select one of these items...once again nothing happens.
It pains me, though, that you can't really change anything (fx. install a card) without loosing the restore ability.
Of course installing a card means the restore woon't cover it all, but I could live with having to do a restore and then reinstalling the my own additions afterwards.....sad story. Why can they not construct the restore so it restores whatever it can (drivers)...?
Fortunately the Win98SE installation files were found in the options/cabs folder so a clean install can be made.

Yes the recovery disk. I do have to say there is one thing and only one thing about HP's recovery disk. You can Recover without Formatting.
But even on Compaq's, you can do it. If you have the Cab files on the Partition, just click on the Setup file and it should restore it....
Good Morning All, The repaired and upgraded Compaq Presario continues operating extremely well. Funny though, I look at it and think of all of you that had an input to help me fix it. Thanks again. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Overall, the screen looks sharper, crisper, and cleaner. The operation is noticeably smoother. The mouse is a joy to use and the processing is vastly improved. You click on the mouse and "it" is there - no delay. Can't wait to get the rest of the components in for BT.
Spent last night setting up files and downloading "stuff". Lot more to do in this area. Been trying to keep both Emails emptied out but a lot of info coming in right now from some of you. It's called "information overload". I love it.
Bistro, To keep from cutting your hands on cases, I have found that a pair of welders gloves works very well when you're inside the case. Now if you believe that, I have .... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
DrMDJ, Can't wait to try the recovery process on the old harddrive.
JTdoom, the 241KB file you sent came in scrambled. Could you resend those favorite in a self extracting zip data file if it's not to much trouble.
Sarkazztic, Could you repost your specs on your new computer please?
OK, where's Daizy at? Anybody hear tell of her lately? Probably lurking. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Real interesting, my computer goes down and comes back up and the computer at work is still down and we are working manually. (Buy paper stocks people. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ ) This indicates to me that there is a difference in who you call to help get you back up. LOL Later

Train,
This was a Western Digital drive he got (has) right? The WDC drives have a jumper on the back that limits the size that the bios (or anything else) sees to 32 gig. The reason I asked about the jumper being set was because in my experience it is best to set this jumper if the drive is in fact going to be used as a 32 gig. If the bios is just given parameters equivalent to 32 gig I've found this can be a potential problem (or lead to one). The reason is that while the bios may be content to think of (treat) the drive as 32 gig, other software, including windows, may not.
Nowadays Windows, and other software running under it, most often bypass the bios for querying info or reading and writing to a drive. They communicate directly with the drive. Granted, the drive here is partitioned to 32 gig. But the possibility exists for Windows or some othe software to see the full capacity of the drive. As a safeguard, the jumper should be set so that everyone can only see that drive as a 32 gig (cause the drive won't let it see more).
Let me add one small consideration to this. If one was to later try use the drive in a newer machine, the minute you hook it up and boot, it would be properly recognised and one would not see any data on it.
That's one hell of a good reason to use the jumper.

You're doing it to me again. Could you please dummy down your last couple of posts so I can understand them? I realize it must be very hard to say it simpler......but as many times as I read it over...I get lost. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

As you have read in these threads, the BIOS can limit the amount [size] of harddrive you can work with. The Compaqs that GG1 and I have, are limited to 32GB by the bios.
Now GG1 has put a 40gb harddrive in his Compaq which come to find out has a means to prevent a disaster. As both jtdoom and DrMDJ told us how to engage.
