I kid you not.....when I rebooted, it loaded everything I have in the systray,went thru the Virus scan and was ready to go before that music ended. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

I've been rereading again, looking for link for those 3D screensavers bistro. I cannot find it. Can you post that again. I saved it on OLD.
Also I found this ...I was supposed to remind you about later :
Under System.ini>[vcache]: MinFileCache=0,
MaxFileCache=3072
Swap File: (mine is on a slave drive identical to the primary and on a different channel)-- set a permanent swap file of 200mb (min and max). Determined this number through the Swapmon program, running 3DMark2000 benchmark and demo consecutively. Then ran Bryce 3D and having it render 4 or 5 complex scenes. Swapmon came up with a suggested perm. swap file of 152, which I rounded up to the next 50mb.
This system config appears to be the best so far--ran several benchmarks with this and all coming up with almost identical high scores. Just a suggestion for ya'll AFTER getting the new system working properly and all your programs loaded on it.

woke up early so Good morning.
QOH
Normally, when you add vcache it will slow 98 down. But, it does work on a few for some reason. And with the new ram I have it does!
this is for 128MB's ram.
[vcache]
MinFileCache=32768
MaxFileCache=32768
; ChunkSize=512
Chunksize is skipped because of the ; .
If it slows you down, simply remove it.
start > run [type in] system.ini > OK
scroll down to [vcache] and paste in this
MinFileCache=32768
MaxFileCache=32768
; ChunkSize=512
and it look like above. Reboot and check it out.
I believe this is what bistro was refering to. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

I am looking at this system.ini. It came up in notepad with a bunch of dll and exe stuff...so I erased everything and put that line in.
Gotta get to work.

Think we we need to do a fly in so we can play too, QoH, all of us! We'd have Bistro on the keyboard, Train on drums, with you singing the Computer Lullaby (currently being written), Mosaic turning the pages and taking care of the register, the rest off those who have had something to say in the choir and me taking care of the punch bowl. LOL https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ HEHE

I think that's a great idea greengoose. We ought to have a live meeting somewhere.
Don't forget to take your own pic bistro if you get ahold of that digital camera today.
I'm thinking about asking my X Brother in law to borrow his so I can take some pictures of this new machine. He's a shift worker so he's hard to catch.

QoH: Delete that sys.ini file and you're dead.... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Looking over those 3D screensavers at the site--have tried most of them. Some are good, some not so good. A lot of these are experiments done and submitted. I'd say of the lot of them, the one included on the CD and HERE are the best.
Here's the homepage.
Most of the screensavers are shareware, but interesting to try out . That aquarium one is pretty realistic--the best "aquarium" one I've seen--just have to fill in the words they say to fill in, then enjoy.
We may need to start considering a backup system for you. Nothing like going through all that installing, only for it to crash on you. There are a few ways. Some folks like GoBack---pros: Can restore your entire system back to what it was 5, 10, 15 minutes ago (or even a few days) very quickly on bootup. Cons: Takes up hard drive space for the "image" and sometimes starts writing to the hd at inopportune times; has a compatibility problem with Norton (patch available). Another method is to use Partition Magic or Ranish and make a second partition--perhaps around 5 or 6 gb. Then use Norton Ghost and make an image of C: on that. Pro: Very accurate--can make a "baseline" of a working system to avoid reinstalling everything. Con: One time shot--doesn't keep a running tab of all subsequent changes/additions on the system. Another way to use Ghost is to have a second hard drive and put the Ghost image on that one.
Another little speed-up/performance tip would be to put a second partition on the hard drive--around 1gb---and put your swap file on that (nothing else), then hide the partition with TweakUI. Just for consideration; not a "command" or an "absolute". https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Go Back is continuously making a copy of what I have so it'll be ready when ever I need it ? Can you turn it off if you're in the middle of something ? Like with the Ctrl/Alt/Del.
Might not be a bad idea. I'd hate to have to start over.
So while I have a good one...how much trouble is the Partition and moving stuff over to it? Something else to learn https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Can I handle it? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
What about a CD writer making a copy of what I have on CD ? I also have access to an external Iomega Zip Drive 100Megs.

No, not Norton Ghost--that's the one-time shot. GoBack is the program that runs in the background ("recording"). You can disable it, but at the risk of losing the entire history. Takes up a little memory, but it's a good program. If everything gets screwed up, you reboot and GoBack gives you a couple of seconds on boot to enter the program and revert back to where the system was just before the screw-up. Saves a heck of a lot of time reformatting and reinstalling.
As far as partitioning, Partition Magic is a bit more user friendly than Ranish. However, it's not totally necessary to start partitioning out right now. Just something for future consideration. Work on getting you system up to where you want it first.
BTW--a screnshot of that 3D Aquarium screensaver HERE---really doesn't do it justice; actually quite brilliant.
EDOT: Sorry--but I ended up deleting my original post--took so long to refresh that I thought it got lost and just retyped this one...

A CD burner would be fine, but remember that a CD will only hold around 649 mb--start putting a lot of stuff on the hd; you're going to end up with 5 or 6 CD's--maybe more. Worse if you're putting all that on 100mb disks. Those are also "one-time" shots; not an on-going update. A lot easier to have an image on a separate drive--that has all the basic stuff on it: all drivers intact, backgrounds, icons, etc. intact; all your basic use-every-day programs up, etc.--then make a Ghost image of it(a "baseline"). That way, if it all goes to hell, you can reformat C:, copy the baseline from D: to C: and have a running system. Then you can hunt around on your ZIP or burned CD for all the little extras you've collected since making that baseline. (You ARE saving those, aren't you? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/). That's the system I use. I download stuff off the Net into the "Hold" directory. Then try it out...if I like it, I move it over to a ZIP disk. When the ZIP is starting to get full, I review the files on it---the ones I definitely want to keep I burn onto a CD, the others are discarded.
Works for me. That's where those icons and wav files came from--a couple hundred different sites; collected in the above manner.

Alrighty then I'll put it all on a separate drive. Got plenty of room now. So it will be double of what I have now ? Then if I add anything else that won't be there. I really don't want to have to redo all those settings and drivers again. HOURS of redoing.
Then when I do get a CD Burner I can do the saving of stuff.
I think I just about have everything I need. I'm going to do Mosaic's suggestion and email myself those things I can't get to on OLD that I miss. Unconnect here and run downstairs and connect there and email to my yahoo email address, then run back up here and receive. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ I'm gonna be wore out !
EDIT:
But D is my CDROM drive. Do I just move it or pick another letter ? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ This is all new stuff.
Sorry for scaring you Mosaic. That was a payback for bistro making me think I had screwed up and ordered the wrong CPU. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

If you are bound and determined https://discussions.virtualdr.com/, you'll need a copy of Norton Ghost--can get it at the shop.
The extra hard drive will be costly--sure you wanna do that right now? If all you are going to do with it is put an image on it, then you can do with just about any ole' hard drive. But if you are going to save other stuff on it, might as well get one like the one you have now--match it (7200, ATA) and put that one on the second ATA channel on your mobo.
My God, someone STOP that girl!.... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Ok aw reddy, so we got to raise a leetle bit of money. So create a corp. and build powerful pcs for the discriminating person who has got to have the best. Bistro is Director of Construction, Mosaic - Director of Instruction (with Chucky in cameo appearances), Train - Director of Procurement, Queen of Hearts - Director of Sales, and my humble self as ..... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
This means you are all on the Board of Directors and now all travel is business expense among other things of course.
Think of the possibilities. And noone can say it can't be done because the Queen of Hearts has given an object lesson in what can be done. HeeHee https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Bistro, take care of yourself. And make sure you do as I say not as I do, I think. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
