https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Love ya' too--you're welcome! OK...Get your mobo CD in. The drivers for Mass Storage Device should be in there. If not, they'll be on the hd floppy. Insert the mobo CD> highlight that storage driver>Properties>Change driver. Elect to "Have Disk" and point it to the file on the CD where it has "ATA controller" or something similar to that(MIGHT be HPT controller/driver)--keep browsing down until an *.inf file appears in the window--that'll probably be it. Hit ok, blah, blah and Windows should install the driver.
Don't worry about the other two--your sound card installation should yake care of those--if that's the SB Live!, then just run the CD setup file--it'll take care of the rest.
Did you install the display adapter driver (Nvidia) yet?
[This message has been edited by bistro (edited 02-07-2001).]

Nvidia is installed but not Direct X yet. I just rebooted after Nvidia.
I'll do the Hard disk next.
-
May be getting ahead here...but here's the deal on the Soundblaster Live! card--it has a SB 16 Emulator that's there for any old legacy DOS games--sometimes makes problems on boot-up---don't need it really. After it installs from the CD program, on reboot, go into Safe Mode (press F8 key as soon as you see "Loading Win 98" prompt). Once into Safe Mode, go to Device Manager>Creative Misc. Devices>highlight 'SB 16 Emulation>Properties> and CHECK "Disable this hardware profile". Hit OK, etc.--then exit out. Next, under the Start Menu. Go to RUN and type in: msconfig
Under the Config.sys file, uncheck everything you see there (if anything's there). Next, go to Autoexec.bat tab and uncheck everything there, too. Reboot as it prompts you. Then let the machine reboot back into Windows and go from there.
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Just follow the sheet....follow the sheet...the sheet is good...follow the sheeeeeet....
Remember the changes I emailed for your monitor when you go in Display Properties (r-click on desktop)---60mhz for Adapter Default, DirectX changes, Open GL changes, etc.
Make sure the monitor is all adjusted nice for viewing (800X600, High Color 16-bit). Sound is working. (Put those speakers in , please....2nd hole from the joystick connection on that card). Load up 3DMark2000, select Custom Benchmark, select "Use Optimal Resolution", then let it fly--post back your "score". IMPORTANT> If it hangs, just hit the Reset button on the case and reboot. Windows will do a Scandisk on boot-up--don't worry, we'll fix the program.

I'm installing the sound card CD now
-
*Hey, Ma! She's doin' the soundcard NOW....Go get Pa!!! Make sure the dawgs are penned up! Hurry!!!*
-
Just a couple more settings.
One stop as it boots on something called vnetbios.vxd.
I just hit enter and it goes on. Need to fix that.
No more yellow ! since the sound card install. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
-
And still no tab for the Monitor to do the 60hz.
Fixing to do the additional Prophet adjustments. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Good Lord!
-
Here's how to fix that one:
In Control Panel>Add/Remove Program> remove Microsoft Netmeeting and anyy other non-used networking programs that were installed when you installed Windows. Go to Device Manager, click on the Network tab, remove all the dial-up Adapters. Close all open programs and reboot your computer. You should get a clean bootup and your system will redetect your dial up adapters. Follow the directions Windows gives you and it should find the drivers in your system files (If not it will ask you for your Win 98 CD).
-
Post back with all the info you can find on that monitor --make/model, etc.--we'll see if we can find a driver for it that will put that tab in there---but for right now, skip it (as if you had a choice... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
-
Remember: the 3DMark program will skip the 64-bit tests--will say something like "Not supported by Hardware"--that's fine (refers to 64 mb cards). Just let it ride until you come up with a score at the end. Post the score here. Then, hit the Demo button, Optimal Resolution, and let it go--lasts for around 5-8 minutes (never really timed it). There's a pause in the demo with a title shot on a green graphics background-- don't disturb it, there's more...
-
One other thing while it's rebooting.
I couldn't find any place to Scroll and select "8-Tap Anistropic" under the 3D settings.
Going to fix the monitor setting now.
-
NEC Multisync 3FGe Monitor.
Why do these speakers beep real loud for 5 secnds everytime the desktop appears ?
Not in the right hole ?
All the settings are done.
Except that one I couldnt find (8-tap Anistropic)
Rebooted. Back at the desktop.
Hey ! I didn't have to hit enter this time for that file! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
-
Sure does boot up fast. And installs stuff fast too !

Smokin' a see-gar while I type....
Go HERE for that monitor driver.
Th speakers--plugged into the second hole from the gameport (joystick port)? Are they powered speakers? Should be hearing that dorky Microsoft sound when you get to the desktop. If not, check your connections and check Volume Control or Audio Properties in Control Panel and see if the volume is turned up or off).
You don't need sound to run the 3DMark2000 test--nor for the demo (but it makes the demo rock...). Will check back in a little while...
-
Looks like some of my posts aren't getting through...so if this one does, and it's redundant...oh well.
Are you hearing sound? Should be hearing that dorky Microsoft chime when you get to the desktop. If not, check your speaker connection (2nd hole from the gameport on the sound card). Go to Audio Properties in Control Panel or Volume Control in your Start Menu(Programs) and see if the volume is down or off. Are these powered speakers?
Either way, go ahead and run 3DMark 2000 benchmark--post back with your score.
Don't need sound for the benchmark, but need it for the demo....

OH MY LORD! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Bistro ! This is making me sick at my stomach ! I have never seen anything so realistic ! Especially in that tube ! I felt like I was in an intestine. Oh! it's on my chair https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Sorry !
SCORE: 4514

I'm shutting down this old thing and swapping the modem over to the new one.
Hope I get back !
-
I apologize...you're supposed to take Dramamine before benchmarking. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Good score. Some other time, we'll work on tweaking that up a bit. Do you have sound?
If so, run the demo at "Optimal". Go get some popcorn first....or a barf bag....or invite the neighbors over....or barf popcorn on the neighbors....

Gee...I hope you make it.... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/. Oh well..I was about to say that that system was not designed for that modem and if you put it in you're liable to....just kidding.
Anyway, as I was saying (if you ever get back to read this...), you need to do a few adjustments here. Not sure if I included these on the tip sheet, but here goes anyway....
Control Panel>System>Performance Tab>File System>Hard Disk>set for "Network Server" and read ahead all the way to the right.
Floppy Disk Tab: UNCHECK
CD-ROM Tab: Cache size--Large, Quad speed +
Removable Drives: CHECK the box
Troubleshooting: leave alone
Go back to the main menu to the Graphics button: Set for Full. Hit OK for main menu.
While you're there at the main menu, check to make sure it's reporting the correct amount of RAM and that File System and Virtual Memory are 32-bit.
Now for the Virtual memory--not sure if you changed this yet, and not sure what I told you to change it to; but here's what you oughta do at this point. Go in there and select to manage your own VM. Put the minimum at 128, maximum at 300. That will handle the vid card and programs just fine. Hit OK and ignore that dire warning from Windows. Answer positively , then reboot the system.
Get those monitor drivers in there as soon as you can--do it the same as you did the ATA drivers.
A word about monitors...i know you're probably now chomping at the bit to get a bigger, better one...that's a good thing. A bad thing would be to spend your children's inheritance for a super deluxe whiz-bang model that you really don't need. 200-300 bucks will get you a nice 17, 18 or 19 inch monitor. Check the Net, look at bulletin boards, watch the papers and TV for Computer fairs (can get a nice one at one of those fairs, but watch it--usually "no returns"). Go with a name you can trust, i.e. Sony, Viewsonic, Samsung. Beware of names/ads such as "Burnout", "Chinese Special", "refurbished", "Warranty? HA!", "Fire Sale! Slightly Soggy/Half-Melted, but Works!", etc., etc. Make sure there is a good warranty with it--3 years is preferred.
Used is OK, but you gotta know what you're looking for and be able to "age" it---know how much it was used and for how long.
The soapbox is open....

Mosaic
tried both ways and got this
Not resetting system File
Io,sys
MSDOS.Sys
Edb.sys
So all are there. Thank you !!
Even printed it out all but the non attribed ones.

And another thing.... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Speakers: Not sure if the ones you're using are powered (I should hope so....). Lots of good PC speaker sets out there to choose from. Look at your computer space. Where would they go and would anything be blocking them? Would it look "cluttered"? Do I want free-standing or monitor-mounted? My system is in a computer armoire--not too much room for free-standing speakers; so I have some Labtec monitor-mounted ones on either side of the screen. Added Creative Cambridge Soundworks to it..two small speakers up above with a sub-woofer down below. When cranked up, the vibes are like being in a California earthquake. Was just my preference, not a recommendation. Besides, I gotta get permission to crank it up from the other half first, so I don't do it too often https://discussions.virtualdr.com/.

I'm here. Had to redo the modem in here. Fired right up. For some reason the DUN is just an icon. Doesn't do anything. I checked add/ remove Win set up and checked that box and rebooted (several times ) but still not working. Also it had a problem with my CDROM but it's ok again. I just asked it to find new hardware.
That file is back again when I reboot. The one that went away after netmeeting was removed.
I'll be doing all those settings now up above here.
-
Virtual Memory was on the sheet.
There is an exclamation point by the CDROM
Still works.EDIT: well it DID. Now it doesn't.
I just rebooted after making those changes in the performance tab.
I even tried the Internet connection wizard for the Dial up Connection and it says it needs RASPI32.DLL. I tried to tell it to find it on the CD when it was working but it couldn't.
Thanks Train. I'm thrilled.
Wonder if I'll need a CD for this modem ? It put it on Com 4. As a standard modem. I didn't see mine in the list. It had Rockwell but no 56K

Do you have a driver for that CD-ROM? If not, post back with the make/model number.
Also the exact make/model for that modem.
Was going to have you download a tweak for that card, but it'll wait. Hey, did you try the demo yet?
