Go back into your BIOS and make sure you have the floppy drive A: set for 1.44. Also check while you're there that the Primary master/slave and the Secondary Master/slave are set for AUTO, both under Type and Mode. Be sure to "Save the Settings and Exit". if all this doesn't work, your floppy drive may be bad. Is the floppy drive light burning constantly?
(See?...these are the glitches i warned you about--not to worry.)
-
OK The cable would not flip over (twist is nest to floppy) but the light is on continuously. So I have "little sweety's" floppy in and that error is Disk I/O. Please insert disk and press any key.

Never mind you folks are to fast for me.

If the light is burning constantly, then the cable is connected incorrectly. Try reversing it again at the floppy drive--it will reverse, just gotta work at it a bit. Now, the end of that cable---is it a big fat connector, or a skinny one? The skinny one's the one you want--unless there is a blade-like adapter coming out of the floppy, then slip the big connector on to it.

Everything was still right in the BIOS so I went back and tried again and still get that error I/O disk error.
At least this floppy light does not stay on all the time now since I flipped the cable on it.
The first floppy's cable would not go any other way.
-
Looks the same on both ends. Except for the twist.
I"ll try fliping it once more.
I'm not worried about the glitches. I am so tickeled to see words on the screen ...and no smoke. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Train, don't feel like the Lone Stranger. It's fun watching. Wonder how much longer they can keep this pace up? HE HE https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Completely oblivious to their surroundings.
Fatigue setting in from no sleep and can't drink any more coffee.
Muscles aching, eyeballs feeling like sandpaper, and still going forward.
Wait until they wake up and find they lost a day. Funny feeling. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Hmmmmm....Make another Windows startup disk. But before you do, go to My Computer>highlight C drive>View>Folder Options>View Tab. Make sure "Show all Files" is checked). Then make a fresh Startup Disk. Then run Scandisk on it.
-
If the floppy light is no longer staying on constantly, then it's in there correctly--just make sure it's seated well. That boot I/O error is caused by either a bad disk or a bad (floppy) drive.

Had many of those days, yourself and bistro also. It is called panic/oh no you don't, wish those were past tense for a couple reasons. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ but run out of money first https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Still exciting though. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

yep all three disks have errors. So does that mean my floppy in this computer is making bad disks? I can make one on my sisters computer tomorrow if that is the problem.
ya think?
-
BINGO! What are you using? Old reformatted AOL disks?? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ That might be a good idea to do it on your sister's computer. Buy a fresh floppy disk(s). You also may have a bad lot of floppies you got there, or your present computer is pooping on you https://discussions.virtualdr.com/. May want to clean the drive with a cleaner floppy.
EDIT: Now if this is going to have to wait until tomorrow, be aware that I'll not be able to "check in" all that often during the day. Can when I can. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Thanks guys, night ! I'll reread this. Didn't mean to ignore you ! Had sumpthin' else on my mind. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I know you are wore out bistro. I have a headache!
BIOS headache. Glad THATS over anyhow.
Thanks bistro for sitcking with me.
See you in the morning. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

You are most welcome. Had a good time (aahhhhh...the Valium is just starting to kick in....ooooooo). We'll get that thing up and running yet. Hey, at least you know the CPU, RAM, mobo and video are working https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
-
Mosaic,
Yes they were new. I'll get a new batch before I make the new one's.
I popped one in here and it showed everything on it. I've never cleaned it but I hardly ever use it. It's an antique remember.
That's ok bistro. I have to work tomorrow too. Maybe if I get a break I'll sneak up here and work on it.
See ya.

Morning All, Looks as though everyone made it. Plumb wore me out just watching. Hey, remember way back the comment was made about bringing one up with no smoke. Qoh did it. We're all going to have to reread yesterday. I agree with Train, couldn't keep up. Just one small question. How do you type and build at the same time time? Awesome. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Will change over tonight. Later and be well.

Good morning, Jim. Your mission, should you decide to accept it is to....*Oops! Wrong forum....*
Good Morning, All. QOH, want to clarify something----are you using a full version Win 98 CD or an upgrade version? If the latter, you'll need a copy (any copy--doesn't have to be yours) of Win 95. And you will need the serial number of the Win 98 CD--won't install without it! (Don't need the serial for the Win 95 CD if you are going to use it for the 98 installation).
Oh, and do a scandisk on that new Win 98 Startup floppy you're making at your sister's place. If it's clean, and you still get that I/O error message, then we've narrowed the problem down to the actual floppy drive. May want to pick up a cleaning floppy kit at the store. (Can find them at Walmart, Kmart, Radio Shack, etc). Remember to follow the fdisk/format walkthrough I sent
you. Pretty basic. After doing it a couple of times, you'll be an expert at it https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
It'll take around 30 minutes to install Windows---during the setup, you'll be asked to confirm the time/date and time zone, etc.
You want to do the "Typical" installation when asked---can customize it later.
I'll be ready with my Jack Daniels, Rolaids, etc. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

QOH's sister here. (Younger, I might add) Just thought you all would like to know, she came by here a bit ago and made a boot disk. I also found one for Windows 98 SE that came from the factory and sent her home with that one. Hopefully one of these will help. I don't think I've ever seen her this excited. I have lots of faith in her abilities. Never seen her NOT accomplish anything she sets her mind to. Guess you might say she's a Jane-of-all-trades and a mistress-of-many. (trades, that is) Just thought you all would like to know since you've been so supportive. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Well, Howdy there, Texas Angel! Welcome to VDr--but you're not telling us anything "new" about QOH https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ She's already demonstrated that determination--actually quite proud of her. Stayed tuned...after she runs that 3DMark2000 benchmarking program, you'll need restraints to quiet her down.... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
-
Thanks for the welcome Bistro. I feel as tho I already know most of you good folks since you all are all she ever talks about. Hard to believe she didn't even HAVE a computer a little over a year ago. She's come such a long way. I've been USING a computer for almost 20 years and it still floors me how much more advanced she is about the internal workings than I am. When she first started, she asked ME questions, some I could answer and others I hadn't a clue. Nowadays, I'm the one asking HER the questions.
I was hoping to get in on the RAM deal she got but found out my machine wasn't able to accept the same RAM she got. I'd love to get more speed from mine, especially now that tax season is here. I hate having to wait for the machine to calculate things. Kinda like using a regular screwdriver when there are cordless screwdrivers. Hopefully someone will have a suggestion for upgrading my RAM. I have a Compaq Presario 4550. But I'll wait until she gets her baby up and running before I worry about that. I feel like an expectant aunt here. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Welcome to VirDr and our little niche Texas Angel. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ She brought it up, no smoke, 1st time. Dang right we're proud of her. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Sense of humor too, looks like. We're in trouble no doubt of it.
Texas Angel, if nothing else, Bistro and Train could maybe help upgrade and speed it up a bit, if'un you're interested. Oh, I/m the other dummie here, same boat as QoH. Later. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Hello Texas Angel https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Thanks
This room is a disaster area. Computer parts everywhere https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Ok NEW floppy drive. New error.
This disk can't boot It was formatted by CP backup. Both disks give me this error. The Factory SE and the new one Texas Angel made.
Better anyhow.

You know that's a lie because YOU SAW ME FORMAT THE D#$M thing while you were here. The CPBACUP format was YEARS ago.
Grrrrrrr!!!!! Didn't the one from the factory work??? Geez Louise! I thought fer sure you would have been able to work with one or the other of those. Not sure what to tell you now. I can get a BRANDSPANKINGNEW disk from B&P and redo what we did this morning iffn ya want. Just let me know. I'm going in after lunch. You can pick it up when you pick up K this afternoon

Texas Angel: Ok, looked up your model. From everything I could see (and i may be wrong), it looks like your model will only take up to 48 mb of EDO RAM (72-pin).
QOH: Waazzzup????!!!? #1: How did you make this marvelous disk? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ #2: Will someone PLEASE send QoH a Win 98 setup floppy via e-mail? I'm at work and unable to do so from here (no 98 systems here). https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Oh now...wait a minute.....even if you download that, no guarantee your present system will copy it correctly (judging from last night). Sheesh!!!
OK...I'd tell you to use the Ultimate Boot Disk, but wouldn't be able to remember all the settings/features. It SHOULD have a FDISK/Format feature for FAT 32 (Win 98) on it. Go ahead and try it--all you want to do is fdisk and format---leave the other features alone. SCANDISK IT FIRST!!!!
EDIT: Be sure that the Startup floppy is made from the SAME version of 98 that you are installing--98, 98 SE (Second edition, etc.)
[This message has been edited by bistro (edited 02-06-2001).]

I appreciate you checking on that Bistro. The machine came with 48 MB of RAM (not sure what KIND of RAM). Was sure hoping to speed this thing up. (waybigo sigh) story of my life! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Seems like every time I get a new machine, it doesn't take long for it to slow down, and then it's not upgradable when it does slow down. Maybe I'll get QOH to build ME one when she gets hers finished.
-
Ok....if you're not going to use (or can't use) that Ultimate disk, then do this....
Do a full format of a fresh floppy on your present system (do NOT copy system files)--make sure it gives you a summary at the end of the format---check for bad sectors reported, etc. If it's "clean", take that floppy and your Win 98 CD to someone's computer that has the same version of 98 (I assume it's 98SE) and make a startup floppy. Just takes a minute. Do a scandisk on it--should be good to go. Come on back and try it in the new machine. At least we know that the floppy drive is attempting to read the floppy; so the problem doesn't lie there.
[This message has been edited by bistro (edited 02-06-2001).]

Nope the ultimate boot disk had errors too
hmmmm...wonder if C P error stands for Compaq Piece ...of crap ?? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I'll come by B & P in a little bit T.A.
Maybe if we make it on their computer ? If you're still home maybe email that bootdisk link to B & P.
-
QOh: You've got a baaaaaddddd floppy drive on that "old" system (isn't it nice that you can almost call it your "old" system? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/)
-
OK QOH, I forwarded the link you sent me this morning to B&P and will get it when I get there. Gonna go pick up some lunch then head that direction. I think you may be right about CP being Compaq Piece. Tho that was made BEFORE the compaq. Probably on Sweetie. Denise may have 98SE on her machine. Not sure which version she has. I'm using ME on mine so we can't use that one. I'll check it out when I get there. Later Tater
-
Yes ! And from this moment forth it shall be referred to as OLD: (Ornery Lousy Dilapidated)
I'll get the new boot disk in a few minutes when TA gets to work.
No excuse now for the Floppy drive. Has to be the disks.
We'll get this thing one way or another. Maybe even email to TA instead of me ? Or does it matter what version of Win 98 it is copied onto the disk from even ?
TA has Win 95 and I will be using her 95 to stick in here for it to read (if I ever...NO...When I get to that point)

Shouldn't have to say this but....Win 98 to make a Win 98 Startup floppy. The machine must be running 98. Can't "cheat". https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
95 might read it, but don't make any adjustments/changes, etc.
