Nope... No UPS man. But Federal Express did bring the CPU. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I find it hard to believe that this little flat square green thingy cost 204.00!
It came with a heatsink/fan. Will this go in the box of "leftover" parts ?
That box already has the cable that came with the Hard Drive in it, a couple of glides for the case and the Video Card.
OH! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/How'd that get in there?!

Good! Now take a close look at it. See that teeny square right in the middle?--that's the "sweet spot" https://discussions.virtualdr.com/That's where that BB-size bit of thermal paste is going to go on. Take care and leave it in the package for now. Just store away that heat sink/fan for now--you've just started what may someday become a vast collection of computer parts https://discussions.virtualdr.com/.
Did you say you ordered the Golden Orb or the GlobalWin? If the GlobalWin, then go ahead and follow the directions from the tip sheet for placing it on the CPU. If the Golden Orb, then that's different. When you get it, check it out carefully and make sure it's the model for Socket 370--should just be the orb with a clip and a wire. If it's got "wings" on it, that's the slot version (wrong); if it's got a different number other than for "Socket 370", it's wrong. Don't try to use it. Now, if it's the "370", you are in business (very good choice!). However, the clip on it is different than the standard clip--it's a "twist-and-lock". Little clip goes on to the ZIF socket "hinge", then it's lowered down carefully onto the chip, then you slowly twist and the other side locks onto the other ZIF "hinge". Highly recommend you practice (carefully) on the empty ZIF socket first to see how it works. Also highly recommend that you open and close the lock on it by hand (not on the ZIF) several times. When they're new, the twist mechanism can be a little tight--that'll loosen it up a bit before attempting to place it onto the CPU. DON"T oil it (like I heard another unfortunate poster do last year...)
The thermal paste: Suggest kneading the tube for around 5 minutes to get rid of any separation. In addition, take a paper towel folded in half and squeeze out about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of paste onto the towel. If you see liquid come out, keep squeezing until just paste comes out. Throw that away and recap the tube. Before putting the thermal paste onto the chip, knead the tube a little once more. Better yet, do the paper towel thing again, but just enough to insure the paste is well mixed (no liquid).
We're almost there......

Good evening Train.
I am sailing, for sure. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Still haven't finished reading the Motherboard Manual yet. I'm workin' on it.
Oh, bistro, I went to the Mitsumi site and found the correct drivers for this model CDROM. They are on a floppy, in case I need them. They also have a diagnostic thing I could get, too, for if I ever have a problem with it.
-
You got the right one. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Good choice for a cooler. Read a review a while back where the GlobalWin and the Golden Orb were neck and neck--both excellent.
Good you got those drivers, but I'll bet Windows will I.D. it OK.
When I said "practice first", I mean it. That little tiny postage stamp chip is very easily fractured--you might not even detect it, but when it comes time to boot up---oops.
Fractured a Celeron FC-PGA last year because I got in too much of a hurry. (Bought it for
55 bucks--not too much of a loss, but it ticked me off...at myself.) https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Be ye cautious and all will be well....
Gotta take a long break here and do some "chores"...may be back later.
(Gonna run next door, ring the Clinton's doorbell, then run away laughing hysterically...)

I'm studying now. Looking at these tiny wires. I have I.D.'d where they go in the PN1 and PN2. I'm practicin'. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I have three spots where nothing is:
On PN1--- The keylock ->#4 and 5....and the Hardware Suspend Switch(SMI Switch)->#10 and 11
On PN2---the Suspend LED Header->#9 and 10.
Are these extra or am I missing something?
And it says to watch orientation. Does that mean all the words on each connector go in a certain direction ? I figured they should face the power supply because it's close to the bottom edge of the case and I'd not be able to read the words later. Was that right?
Also, on one of the bundle on the power supply there is a tiny ended one too, off a Y. Don't know what that is either. The rest I can figure out....I think.
I made a practice run on the cables too. Got that figured out.
One puzzling thing. The 34-pin connector for the floppy looks defective on one end. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
The cable is cut at about the eighth wire, and that section of looks like six wires is flipped over then the next twenty wires are straight again. I didn't use that end of the cable, (cause it looks retarded) I used the smaller 34 pin connector of the two connections in the middle. One was 34pin, the other looked like the 40pin that went on the Motherboard's IDE connection.
You didn't leave a bag of doggie doo burning on the White House porch, did you ? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Too late...i saw it... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Can't be of much help there. Your mobo is different from mine. All I can tell you is that all the labels on mine face the intake fan (towards the front of the case)---(that's both sides of where you insert those plugs). You'll have to consult your mobo manual. On mine, looking at those pins from top to bottom, it goes negative-positive. Nowadays, the "HDD LED" and "TurboLED" are all one plug (not two as might be indicated in the manual). You probably don't have a PWRBT--skip it.
You can skip the Keylock also--not really necessary. On mine, starting with the row of pins closest to the intake fan, from top to bottom, labels facing toward the fan, are as such: HDD LED, skip 2 pins, POWERSW, RESET SW. On the set of pins on the inside, from top to bottom, labels facing the intake fan, are as such: SPEAKER on the top pins, POWER LED on the last ones. Like I said, you need to consult your mobo manual as to your particular configuration. But if the pins from top to bottom (both sides) go from negative to positive consecutively, then the plugs (for both sides) go with the labels facing the intake fan. Any other positions for which you don't have a plug for, don't worry about it.
Hope this helps.
Have to say Nite. Going to a morning conference; then maybe off to Microcenter to browse https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
-
I'm sure I have the right connector on the right pins. I did it by the book. But it didn't say which way thay faced. Only to be sure the orientation was correct. I have my labels all facing the same direction (logically https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ ) but the more I think about it...now I noticed the little + signs on the diagram and soooo I need to figure out which side of the connector (each has two wires) is the + side. I know they are all different colors on one side but they ALL have a white wire. So would the white wire be the + ? If I knew that, then I could figure out which side of that connector is the +... then I would know which direction to put it in.
I no speaky 'lectric.
-
The white is normally negative - [please note the normally]
One of the reasons I worked with the manual from the website is acrobat reader has a magnifing glass in it so I could enlarge it.

Normally....hmmmmmm.
Gambling. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I guess they (in the Motherboard book) cannot say specifically how to do this orientation business because those wires are from the switch which came with the case, and they would have no idea which case or switch. I got out the case exploded view hoping those wires were on there...nope.
Is there a tester ?
-
On those wires for the S500 case, white is negative (as Train alluded to). So if your mobo switch assembly connections, from top to bottom, go negative-positive, then all the plugs are oriented with the labels facing the front of the case.
-
Hmmmm..is there a tester? Yes. You can wet your finger, turn the power on and touch those pins. If the shock feels "negative", then you'll know...you'll know not to touch those opposite pins... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
(Don't mind me...I'm in one of those moods...)
-
OK, ok, ok...I'll get "real" here... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
It's not going to hurt the computer or the LED assembly if they aren't oriented correctly when you power on. When powered on, just check that the POWER ON LED on the front is burning constantly. The HD LED (orange) should just be flickering, then maybe burn for a few secs, then flicker again (as the hd is spinning). The RESET button should do just that, reset the system (reboot). The Power Switch should turn off the power after holding it in for a couple of seconds. if any of the above is not working the way it should, just reverse the appropriate plug at the mobo. DON'T check this until everything's on the system and ready to power up. (It's no biggie for now, in other words).

I got out the magnifying glass and I still don't see it marked on those little plug ends. That's ok, I have them right now for sure.
Glad you reminded me about that CDROM to Sound card plug, bistro. I forgot about that little wire. It was also in the spare parts box. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I sure do have some boxes stacking up here. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Got a notification on the RAM. It's on its way to my doorstep. Only one so far. I was getting kinda worried. The other is on back order, but I can always stick that in later if it doesn't get here pretty quick.
EDIT:
Speakin' of wires. I am checking out where the fans plug in. According to the Motherboard manual you plug the cpu fan into FAN1 and the chassis fan into FAN2 or FAN3 Well, those plugs are too big to be putting there. The heatsink/fan that came with the processor (spare parts) has a little bitty plug so I'll assume the Golden Orb (I love that name https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ ) will have the same little bitty kind of plug. So do the chassis fans get plugged into the power supply instead ? There are both male and female plugs on those fans. Either...or both ?
[This message has been edited by Queen_of_Hearts (edited 02-03-2001).]
-
Can't remember...did you get the Golden Orb yet? Either way, don't forget to remove the so-called "thermal pad" on the bottom. It's covered by a piece of wax paper--take a razor blade and peel up a corner (carefully) and you should be able to peel off the rest by hand (the whole thing; not just the wax paper). Be sure to wipe the bottom with an alcohol swab, then let it dry. You want bare metal in contact with the chip (with that tiny dab of thermal paste between).
[This message has been edited by bistro (edited 02-03-2001).]
-
Not yet on the Golden Orb. But I see the stuff on the spare that came with the processor. I'll dig that off the ORB too.
I added some more ?'s to the above too.^^
COOL! I just opened the book for the Intel Pentium III Processor. It has a hologram on the cover! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
There's one on the Motherboard too. Evidently that's the evidence it's the real McCoy.
Now if I could just find the English section of this P-III booklet. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ EXTENT OF LIMITED WARRANTY
Intel does not warrant that your Intel Pentium III processor will be free from design defects or errors known as "erotica" https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Current characterized erotica are available upon request. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Oh! wait ! It's errata...sorry https://discussions.virtualdr.com/...shoulda used that magnifying glass.
-
Maybe that's "erotic errata"... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
The chassis fans will have to be plugged into the power supply--with just a floppy, CD-Rom and Hard drive, you should have plenty of plugs to connect those fans into. Yes, the Golden Orb will have a small 3-hole plug to put into that FAN 1 connector.
Gettin' close.....
-
But why are there two on the fans? Either/or?
I'll have to visit the Intel Website and find out what these errata are. Hope it's not something warez. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
EDIT:
I See ! That's an extra for something else. Like a Y. So only the one will plug in, whichever happens to work. And then the end becomes free to use again.

I am starting to "see" now that when I read I get to "feel". https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
"Most systems only have one CD-ROM. So, configure this CD-ROM as a master. It is best to have this CD-ROM alone on the second IDE channel of your motherboard. Jumpers can be set with a pair of needle-nosed pliers or tweezers. Many are capable of grabbing the jumper with their fingers or nails. This is fine, too.
If a particular drive does not need to be jumpered at all, it is best to hang the jumper over one pin. This is the same as being unjumpered, but make sure the jumper is there for future use if needed."
So, to satisfy my curiosity... I slid it out to look at the back. I had to scribble on the metal with a pencil to be able to read the words but it says CS SL MA. The little black jumper is over the middle pin but it's verticle.
Since it's verticle and it's only on one pin that means it's OK even if it is on the SL pin? Kinda in Neutral just like the Hard Drive?
I should just leave the side off. I'm gonna wear out the threads on those screws taking it off and on so much https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
-
Put that jumper on the MA (Master) setting (vertical). CS stands for "Cable Select", SL for "Slave".
You're going to make that CD-ROM the Primary Master on the IDE 1 channel. Your hard drive is going to be run as the Primary master on the ATA channel.
[This message has been edited by bistro (edited 02-04-2001).]

OK Done.
Now....I been reading. I looked up Installation of the Golden Orb. Uh OH ! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
"Mounting the ORB is the one area that demands caution - it does take an unusual amount of force to twist it onto the socket 7's lugs. Unfortunately for me, my first attempt at mounting this to a Celeron 433 resulted in one of the socket's lugs shearing off. Thankfully it was a cheapo slotket. The lesson however is obvious - mounting the ORB is not for the faint of heart or weak of wrist."
