Not to be negative, but don't panic when after you install 98 that there's a glitch or two. Just post your questions/problems and we'll try to work through them--hopefully some others will jump in too. First installs of 98 sure are more stable than 95 was, though... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I like the icons, bistro. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
You know... I wont be able to see to post if I have this monitor on the new one. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I have one from the old 386 I can put on here while I'm firing the new one up.
Yep. That'd be your best bet.
Sent the "tip" sheet BTW.
Se ya' tomorrow...Nite all. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Sorry to interrupt your conversations here, but i have a question about one of the items you intend to order. You mentioned a "cyclone". What exactly is that?

Cyclone
It's a cooling fan that fits in one of the slots on the Motherboard.
You're not interrupting ! Welcome! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

There you are greengooes! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Hope you get to feeling better. I was worried aboutcha. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
BALUSC, I'll use the AltaVista Translator and find out what it says.
Morning !
I screwed the case tight to the floor, so it don't fly away. But I'm still preventing my house to fly away... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Q_O_H, Altavista translator don't have Dutch -> English. A pity... I could update the English section of my homepage much easier otherwise. I hate using the dictionary constantly https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Been doing a lot of testing on that card lately--playing around with several configurations with the system and seeing how it affects the benchmarks. Most of them I ran 4 to 5 consecutive b'marks per system config to eliminate/average scoring discrepancies. Seems that the following yields the best so far:
Running @ 800mhz with 192mb RAM--
Under System.ini>[vcache]: MinFileCache=0,
MaxFileCache=3072
Swap File: (mine is on a slave drive identical to the primary and on a different channel)-- set a permanent swap file of 200mb (min and max). Determined this number through the Swapmon program, running 3DMark2000 benchmark and demo consecutively. Then ran Bryce 3D and having it render 4 or 5 complex scenes. Swapmon came up with a suggested perm. swap file of 152, which I rounded up to the next 50mb.
This system config appears to be the best so far--ran several benchmarks with this and all coming up with almost identical high scores. Just a suggestion for ya'll AFTER getting the new system working properly and all your programs loaded on it.
BALUSC https://discussions.virtualdr.com/--interesting project--I love "gizmos"....unfortunately I don't have an extra old PCI card right now to do that. But it would be fun.
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/I am looking for a translator for bistro to English. I'll do a search in goggle. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I'll worry about this swap stuff much later. Need pictures for this part, too... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
All I want for right now...is no smoke.
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Ok...in plain English:
You gotta put the dongle on the whatzamathingy and set it for that number in order to get the thinamajig to work.... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
There...howz that?
Don't worry about that https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ I'll walk you through it when the time comes--just remind me later, OK?
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Ohhhh ! Why'ncha just say so?
OK I will...that is unless you are in Nepal. Still got that ticket? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Gotta get back to work. Kinda expected the UPS man with my Motherboard. hummmmm Maybe it's a new guy and he's just late.
Something to add to that tip sheet in the email....Before putting on the CPU, thermal paste, etc., practice a little putting the heat sink/CPU fan onto the ZIF socket on the mobo, so when the time comes, you'll be more familiar with how it works. Just be sure to ground yourself first before handling the board.
We're in the money ! http://www.zing.com/picture/p2552327...8/ff3ff6c6.gif
Big check just arrived in the mail! I'm ordering ALL the rest right now!
That's great! Now...sign the check over to:

That's ok bistro... I think I can handle this part. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I haven't had time to order yet. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ I will before the day is over. I'm still working...Gotta get um while I can.
Bistro
The package arrived today. Thanks, for the stuff.

https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Was there for a conference...mailed it there. Those are TDK--nice CD's; haven't had a coaster yet. The label was made with the CD Stomper program. Enjoy.
Allrighty. All that's left to order now or get, is the modem. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Oh and the globalwin heatsink/fan. Can I get a golden orb?
Ok...let's review https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Here's a list of the peripheral items you should have at your
workspace when ready to build. If you don't have them, you could find yourself stopping
everything to run out to the computer store; then coming back only to find out you have
to go back again https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ :
1. 1x cup of courage
2. 2x cups of patience
3. 1x list of cuss words--make your own list beforehand--add some colorful ones.
4. 1x tube of thermal paste ("grease")--the silicone kind is best--just a small tube.
5. Packet of motherboard screws; an extra packet of computer hex screws also--those are the ones you see on those slot covers at the inside, back of the case. Nice to have extra.
6. 1x small Phillips head screwdriver--preferably the type in a computer tool kit.
7. 1x small slothead (named after me...) screwdriver (named after my favorite drink...)
8. TV tray and small bowl--to place small parts on to keep track of them
9. Copy of the tutorial from PC Mechanic.
10. Bandaids--because you got in too much of a hurry and cut your finger needlessly...
11. Copy of "Bistro's PC Building Chant". If you don't have a copy, it goes like this:
"WhatInTheHellAmIDoing? WhatDidIGetMyselfInto?
(Doo Waa, Doo Waa)
ThisIsGonnaTakeMeForever!
WhyDid'ntIJustGetAReady-Made?
(Doo Waa, Doo Waa, Doo)
IMustBeInsane! (Scooby-Dooby-Doo!)"
---chanted in 3/4 time to the tune of "I Can't get No Satisfaction".
12. (Optional) 3M 6969 tape---for right now, can use small pieces to tape down stray fan wires to keep them out of the way. Later, will post pics of other suggested case "mods".
13. Anti-static wrist strap--or get into the good habit of touching the case chassis each
time before you touch the inside or a component.
That should do it. Will add later anything else that comes to mind. Or if any of you readers can think of something else--chime right in.
Just thought of something else about the case....FIRST THING when you get that BX133 mobo.
Check the configuration of the serial/parallel/keyboard, etc. port connectors at the back.
Then compare with the pattern on the I/O plate on the case--MAKE SURE THEY MATCH the appropriate openings!. If the config is different, you'll have to get in touch with the vendor and see if they will send you the correct I/O plate. The extra one I ordered is a different pattern than the one that came with the case...(no biggie, now I can go either way if I change the mobo). Hopefully they'll do a freebie exchange for you.
If the config matches, then go ahead and remove the "breakaway" plates from the matching holes only. Watch it--those edges can be sharp.
Hmmmmmm....can I make this any longer? Nope. Will post more when needed.
P.S. QOH: Yes, the Golden Orb will be a fine addition--usually used for overclocking, but it will keep that chip nice and cool.
[This message has been edited by bistro (edited 01-30-2001).]
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/Well....maybe I just might wanna overclock ! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ You can teach that course next semester.
What brand of modem would you think is a good one ? I know it should not be winmodem and it needs to be PCI.
Let us see how close he Comes to this

Hmmmmm..OK....
Won't see much difference between an ISA or PCI modem there. Go with a non-winmodem absolutely--take a load off that CPU. Creative or 3Com (US Robotics) makes some good-un's. ISA will cost a little bit less.

Yikes!!! And that just goes to show why you should NEVER, NEVER, NEVER let a sheep work on your computer....
Since it was felt the voltage was around 50,000 . Cpu, motherboard, I would just start over if I were in that persons shoes.
Night all.

I remember now why I thought that. When you were telling the difference between the Abit SE6, and the one we got, you said it (the Se6) only had PCI slots. That's where I got that in my head.
So either one for this board.
EDIT:
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Ohhh...That was with the case closed too!

QoH: Might as well go for a PCI modem. Mobos are slowly going to PCI/AGP only. Next time you upgrade to a new mobo (not anytime soon), you'll have a compatible modem should you choose to keep it.
Yes, motherboards are slowly but surely trying to get rid of the ISA bus. It is old and will soon just be a system bottleneck. While for something like a modem it won't make much difference since modems can't recieve or transfer data at much speed anyway, the isa bus can't be used for just too much anymore. And not to mention cards for ISA slots are becoming harder to find these days.

Then as long as I am getting a new one anyway, I'll get the PCI. Oh I still need the Surge protector too. I ccan get that locally.
