Ok...from now on I'll write my instructions in a way to help QoH understand and assimilate:
In order to (sex) keep the (sex) CD-Rom (sex) device from vibrating (sex) too much,
(sex, sex, sex), you need to (sex) take one of the screws (sex) and secure the CD at the back, side (sex) hole--one screw oughta do it (short sex); then remove the other case side (sex) and do the same (sex) on the other side(sex)--this will secure the device in the (sex) bay. Don't have to (sex) bother trying to (sex) secure it in those front, side screwholes (sex)--they're too recessed anyway https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/Oh ! I see !
Fixin' to go screw ...those in now.
Got my Hard Drive. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Western Digital 20 gig
7200 RPM --3 year Warranty
Complete with jumpers, screws, and a 40 pin, 80 conductor IDE interface cable. ($115.00 no tax ...no freight) https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I'm thinkin' about ordering the Hercules Prophet II MX 32MB Video Card today, too.
Whoa! Youz goin' fast, girl! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Okie Dokie...to place the hard drive is simple. Remove the holding screw on the hard drive cage (just below the 3.5 bays) and slide it out carefully). You'll notice it has an upper and lower "bay". Recommend you mount the hd in the lower bay--this not only provides air space above it, but also places it closer to the front intake fan--helps to keep it cool. Just position the hd up with the side screw holes and secure it into the cage (4x screws)---try to handle the hd by the sides only and avoid touching the IDE electronics underneath it--touch the chassis before handling it to discharge any static on you. Gently slide it back in on it's glider and replace the holding screw. Don't put the cable on it, the floppy or the CD as yet. Will give you more room to work to put the mobo in. Replace the side panel(s) and front panel if need be for now to help keep the dust out.
EDIT: AND OH, BTW, the connectors on the hd go towards the INSIDE.... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ And don't plug in any of the power connectors!

Allrighty ! I'm goin' in !
Thinkin' about that Video card... Maybe I should order the Motherboard first. Then as the other stuff gets here I'll be ready to start putting those pieces in where they belong ?
Actually, it's better to install all your devices (CD, HD, Floppy, etc.) before installing the mobo and cards. That way, if you happen to drop the device inside the case while installing, you don't damage the much more delicate mob/cards.
Devices, then mobo, then cards/RAM, then connector cables (IDE & power). You can opt to put the RAM and CPU on the mobo first, then mount the mobo/RAM/CPU assembly in the case--no problem with that, but DO NOT put the vid, sound card, modem on first. Wait until the mobo is mounted, then install the cards.

I'm done.
Sure would have been nice to be able to use a magnetic screw driver for those little bitty screws. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I resorted to putting a little piece of pookindooey on the end of the screw driver.
...or uckumpuckey --depending on what part of the country you're from. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Don't tell me that's it?
[This message has been edited by Queen_of_Hearts (edited 01-24-2001).]
BTW On the drivers side of the case I could not find a screw long enough to reach thru the slit of the metal to get to the CDROM body. Passengers side went just fine. Had one little rectangular inny dimple towards the back and was able to get one in there.
In the bag of 4 screws that came with the Hard Drive is a miniscule black connector with no wires. What's that?
That's called a "miniscule black connector with no wires". https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Is it a tiny square thingy? That's a "jumper". Was it loose, or did you take it off the hard drive? Look at the back of the hd--you'll see a long connection--lots of pins--then right next to it you'll see a much smaller section with same size pins--is there a jumper attached in there? Look at the top of the hd--should have a diagram showing the different jumper settings for Master, Slave, Single drive. The hd should have already been jumpered or not jumpered. Better yet, post back with the make/model and I'll check into it.
BTW, you should have also got a floppy disk with that hd--just put it away for now--you won't need it---we're going to do a "clean" install using a Win 98 boot disk--much. much better than what's on that floppy.
Not sure when I'll get back to this thread--will try to check in.
Duh on me! Just look in the manual that came with the hd--should have a page with the jumper settings (diagram). Like I said, it should have already been factory set for either Master or Single drive. Now, we're assuming you are NOT going to slave that old drive to the new one and clone it. Don't. If there is a jumper on the back of that hard drive, if it's horizontal, then it's in a "neutral" position. If it's vertical, then the hd has been set for a particular setting. In either case, leave it alone. That jumper in the bag is probably just an extra.
Those things may be tiny, but they're important. You'll see one or a few on your new mobo. The only one you really will need to be concerned about is the one near the CMOS chip--used to clear the CMOS when necessary. Should be no need to adjust any of them, so leave them be.
It was loose in the bag with those 4 screws.
You did mean to install with the green part up, right ? So now I'd have to turn the case upside down to see that diagram ? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I wrote them down on the Warranty page before putting it in. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
WD200BB-00AUA1
Yes they are in the manual.
The one that is already there in the back is white and horizontal.
I'm reading the book now, too.
Did have a CD in the box.
EDIT:
Nope it is a floppy.
[This message has been edited by Queen_of_Hearts (edited 01-24-2001).]
Mine had the second jumper also, it for the 9 pin connector. It requires 2 connectors in each setting. But, I got the 10, therefore I have a backup.
The floppy was with mine also.

Evenin' !
Well, I'm ready for some more installin'. This is pretty easy so far. And this was the part I was worried about. The cards I've already "had experience" with https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Now, those connectors loose in there hangin' off that power supply...will I be able to figure THAT out? Hopefully, only one will work with each componant...then there will be no deciding about it. Still concerned as to why there are y's on the end. One goes on e place another in another or just in case the componant has one or the other ? ...Did that make sense? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
2 go to floppies , incase you have 2 of them.
and do not forget all your fans either https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
cd-rom
3 fans
HD
If not enough connectors, you can get Y connectors and double you 4 pins. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

The more I hear about this useless bundle of software the more inclined I am to consider that White Box. I called their 1-800 # about it and asked if it included the same three year Warranty. They assured me it does. And all it does NOT have is that pretty box and the demos and game. Not the same as OEM... still...
Morning All, Will change over tonight. Any ideas on a different board. Looks like even the better cards have trouble passing all the tests or is it a case of being real pickey and are these tests that are run out of the eyes range or capability? Later and be well. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

QoH: "Silver" side up, "green" side down; with the connectors facing towards the inside of the case. Hey, if it's the same card without all the bells and whistles, go for it. You'll want to install the Nvidia reference drivers anyway, not the ones on the CD.
Am in the process of compiling a BIOS and Display Properties "tweak" list so ya'll can get the most from that vid card.
Re: the power wires---pretty logical. "Big" plugs go into devices (CD, HD), little ones go into floppies. You are just given a choice of how to arrange them. You'll notice one, maybe two that have a big plug and a little one in 'Y'. Little one can go to a floppy, big one either for a HD or CD or a fan that has a matching plug--doesn't really matter. It's a good idea for each major device (CD/HD) to have it's own line though if possible, rather than share a Y-connector. Sharing a Y between a fan and the floppy drive is fine.

https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ I have it upside down.
Oh well... just four screws.
Connections are in the right direction, tho. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I think I will for $120 vs $150
I'm in a gambling mood this morning. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Tweakin' huh? Good
Mornin' btw

Nothing "wrong" with having it upside down--with some configs with multiple hd's some of them have to be oriented that way. But for yours, just flip it. That way, the electronics exposed on the "card' side aren't anywhere near the metal surface of the hd cage.
Yeah..."tweaks"--just a bunch of cut & paste, my additions, and a few other goodies. Messed with the card last night---score went up further from 4600's to 4900's. Think that's about it for the tweaking. Very happy with the performance.
How's the mobo hunt right now, guys?
The Motherboard Abit 133BX RAID (370 socket)is ordered and so is the Hercules Prophet II MX !
Looking at Tuesday next week, probably. I may be able to order some more real soon. Doin' real good this week $$ ! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Gonna pick up a keyboard and mouse too--- and the modem.
Any one know anything about this site? Could be useful. Is there a better one?

Sorry, but I find that "service" to be somewhat ludicrous. Why would i want to upload, then download files over the Net just to copy my files onto a new hard drive? (Unless I was doing it for someone else long-distance). Can do it right here. Has a 300mb limit(per session?)---most hard drives with programs, apps, exceed that. The only "advantage" I see is to transfer files from home to office or vice-versa. There's apps to do that like PC-Anywhere.
Finished typing up a BIOS/Display properties tweak sheet for the Prophet II. I'll send it to ya'll if you want.
QoH: check your e-mail. Yes? No?
Nuffin' here yet, bistro. I'll keep checkin'.
Be here a few more minutes, then I gotta get busy and make some more money. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I turned the Hard drive over on his li'l tummy. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
OK....will resend. Something to you to greengoose.
Yup--still messed up. Something to do with Micropuff's domain server I believe...
Will send later. With as many people that use Hotmail, it's going to be like Old Faithful erupting when they "turn it on". https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/Suckers are too busy deleting everybodys mail. I got a letter the other day that said I was over my limit in MB of storage and if I didn't get rid of it by the 25th, they'd do it for me. Mighty thoughtful, huh?
If ya'll haven't done so already, you'll want to make a Windows 98 Startup disk (can do it under Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs). I'd use that, rather than the Ultimate Boot disk--will be less confusing to follow the instructions HERE to FDISK (partition) and FORMAT your new hard drive. This is probably one of the best and most simple to understand tutorials on the subject---very straightforward. Recommend printing all of them out and have it handy when ready to prep the system for 98 installation. Takes you though from FDISK to installing 98. Ignore that section on Special FDISK commands--don't screw around (at least right now... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/). You'll need the following:
Win 98 Startup floppy
Full version of 98--or an Win 98 Upgrade version and a Win 95 CD. (Do NOT try to use a "Recovery CD" from an OEM computer).
CDs/floppies of all your other software.
Export copy of all your e-mail addresses and Favorites (can get them all on one floppy).
Copies of any bmps, icons, cursors that would be "lost" if something goes wrong.
Setup copies of any programs that you feel the world would end if you lost them.
Printed copy of the tutorial (fdisk, format and 98 installation).
(Hang on to that Ultimate Boot Disk--it'll come in handy for future operations--but for right now, recommend use the Win 98 Startup).
May be being redundant here, but it is NOT necessary to install 95 if using the Win 98 Update CD. Early in the Setup, it will ask to "see" Windows 95. You just have to remove the 98 Update CD, insert the 95, and point the program to that CD--it reads/checks, then you'll be prompted to put the 98 CD back in. Then carry on your merry way. As soon as Windows is fully installed, you'll be surprised to see that your monitor screen appears out-of-whack...don't panic. It's that generic PCI VGA driver that Windows installed. I wrote up all the details on that "tweak sheet' on how, and most importantly, when to make the appropriate adjustments to the screen. Will e-mail that sheet to you (and anyone else who needs it) when M$ corrects their "Little Problem".

https://discussions.virtualdr.com/OH GOOD! Pictures ! I think I can handle this!

https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ bistro,
What about all my Windows Updates ? SP1, the shutdown patch, etc. When I go to the Windows update site, does it read my computer or look up some kinda record](using the Product Key Code in my registry or ISP, email... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/...whatever it uses to be able to tell) of what I already downloaded from my last visit ?
What I mean is...will it think I already have those things because I put them on here or is it going to read my new system and know what I need ?
QoH, Train said something about this.
