case-fong kai 320,msik7t pro-2-a,1ghz t bird, ibm 30 gb ata100,floppy,dvd,sound blaster x-gamer,voodoo 5 5500,modem and network card, win me,be careful buying bare drives ,my harddrive came with a 3 year warrenty and absolutely nothing else,no manual ,drivers, lucky for me my win me manual had instructions on fdisk and formating, beware if you go with win 2000 proto,i installed that first and most of my installation cds wouldnt work,i had to spend an hour downloading drivers for the voodoo and sound blaster and most of the other stuff to,finally got it all set up ,decided i didnt like it and formated again and installed win me,no problem there with drivers,if you go with an athlon cpu you might consider ordering from monarch computer because they mount the cpu and hsf and test before sending so you know your getting a good board and not a doa and you dont have to worry about crushing the cpu and you get the 3 year warrenty to,dont buy 3dfx either ,i bought mine and they are out of business now and want have any support after feb,the msi is a great board to ,it doesnt have beep codes ,it has led lights so when you boot up first time and you get all green lights you know your good to go and the manual has all the trouble shooting codes for those lights and also live bios so you can flash new versions from windows ,good luck building yours its the only way to go ,i will never buy another branded pc again,i now know exactly what i have in mine and if i need to update drivers i now know what to get
Morning All, Mine came right thru Bistro. Thanks. And they charge for that? I always thought directions came with anything. Oh, well. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Misery, thanks for the comeback on your experiences and setup. Every input like that gives us a better feel for what we are doing. Anything else you think of, please post. Thanks. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
QoH, Saw a WD 7200 for $126 on that same site. Got to go back and check out the details and other stuff. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Train, have you checked prices any this week? The earnings reports on hi-tech cos and forecasts are still going south. I figure a 6 month window of opportunity to buy at good prices. You? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/Any of the rest of you have an opinion on this.
In starting to go thru the Operation Delta threads I noticed something already. We don't answer all of the questions we bring up. As I recall we have talked about this before. Maybe we're trying to go to fast and getting spread to thin.

Ah, c'mon, greengoose...you just like to bump... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ What exactly is the problem?
Received, bistro ! Fixin' to print. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Now don't get too excited... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ I was just surprised that this would cost 2 bucks...nonsense really.
I believe it was Mosaic1 who proposed some ideas as to what to do while waiting on the parts, etc.--good idea. Here's a suggestion:
(Assuming you are getting all new parts, including a hard drive, and are going to use 98 and NOT clone the old hard drive onto the new (clean install)).
Get some floppies/ZIP disks ready (or burn a CD).
Save/export all your Favorites and Address Book from your browser.
Look through Windows and save all your favorite bmps, jpgs (backgrounds) and additional screensavers that didn't come from Windows or Windows Plus.
Save any homemade/downloaded cursors, icons, etc.
Save any downloaded programs you want to keep---be selective.
Check all your other programs and make sure you still have the setup CD's/floppies.
This would be a good time to "clean house" and decide what programs to forego--that you don't really use and are just using up space. Set them aside for a yard sale in the Spring.
Make sure you have your Win 98 CD and it's in good shape. Make a fresh 98 boot disk.
Now, if you are planning on cloning your old drive onto the new, recommend downloading the 95/98 bootdisk program from www.bootdisk.com. Has a good cloning utility on it.
Good point, Mosaic1. I always write down the CD key with a Sharpie pen right on the CD--no one else uses my CDs. And never throw away the box until that's done--sometimes the CD key is not on the jewel case--it's on the registration card or outside the box.
Basically, you're saving everything that, when the old hd gets erased, you suddenly go "Oh, s$$$!" https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Another way is to keep all the stuff on the old hd, then after the new master is made and operating correctly, slave it to the new master and transfer that stuff over. It's still a good idea to have backups on the important stuff.
EDIT: Good article on building HERE. Have to download it and have Acrobat Reader to view it. The authors are very, very good--their magazine is excellent.
[This message has been edited by bistro (edited 01-11-2001).]
Good idea on the registry tweaks. I have a folder on a CD marked "Reg Hacks"--mostly from vv--for stuff like that, I save them temporarily on a ZIP, then from time to time burn them onto the CD. This same CD has all the programs/utilities that I use and downloaded off the net--saves a whale of a time reloading them when necessary. Another CD is dedicated to BMPs, JPGs, cursors, icons--any imagery, homemade or off the net, that would be irretrievable on a new system (or would take a heck of a lot of re-searching).
EDIT: Haven't encountered that, but have seen some real persnickety old hd's--wouldn't be surprised--a lot depends on how old the BIOS is also.
Hey, when you get your cases, would be interested to see if they provide the mounting screws for the rear exhaust fan, or if it's already mounted.

They're in Houston !
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/hmmmm.....I think I'll walk on over and get mine greengoose
Save me some freight https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I see the case comes with a 235W PS and at the bottom there are choices to "upgrade" to a different one with several 300W's to choose from. Hopefully, those are fancy upgrades. They add a whole bunch to the cost https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I am going to call now and find out the scoop. They may not even have a "store" https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
[This message has been edited by Queen_of_Hearts (edited 01-11-2001).]
QOH: go with the 300W--that way you can add components later and will probably still be within the limits of the power supply.
Another thing: Assuming ya'll are going to get ATA66/100 7200rpm hard drives---keep your old ones. That Abit mobo has 4 connectors--you can use the old one on an IDE connector as a Secondary master---put your apps/games/data on it, or just your swap file. Don't slave it to the 7200--it'll slow it down. You could plug it into the second ATA connector, but it'll run at 33 rather than 66 or 100.
EDIT: QOH--then go with the ground UPS--you should get it the next day or day after.

Here's the scoop.
If i get it with the 300W PS it's $47.00 more AND I have to pay tax because they are in Texas, and so am I.
But at Allstar it is $56.00 with the 300W PS included, and NO tax... altho freight would be more. Soooooo I am thinking that Allstar is the way to go. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
[This message has been edited by Queen_of_Hearts (edited 01-11-2001).]
This sounds dumb, I know...but hey, it's me...just be careful ordering. They list the A500 right beside the S500. The A case has a funky lopsided power supply--don't want that.
If you want, you might consider getting an extra set of 5.25 rails for that third bay just to have on hand (under Case accessories)--only 2.00 for a set. Nice to have on hand, because, if you aren't careful those things are easy to bend out of shape. Also under Motherboard accessories, they have packets of those mobo screws--one pack of 8 costs a buck.
By all means, QOH, go with the better deal.
Ammendment to my post above: They can't take orders for less than 10 bucks and it'll cost 6 to ship it ground UPS. If you have access to a good computer store, you might be able to pick these up--BUT, those rails may be S500 specific and only available from the vendor. Might want to throw them in with your order. That way, you have a complete set for the case. I ordered a few other items just to throw in my tool kit and have on hand.
Allstar doesn't have any "accessories" like the screws or rails. I will order those, and the fans from Directron. The fans could have been ordered with the case at the bottom of the page along with the case if I had ordered from Directron. Since I'm not getting the case there, I looked for fans separately (at Directron)and I see a whole page of them but there are 8cm but no 3". Is it the first one one the left ?
And where did you find the extra rails ?
[This message has been edited by Queen_of_Hearts (edited 01-11-2001).]
Roger that. 8cm x 8cm fan = 3" x 3" fan.
EDIT: Extra rails are listed under "Case Accessories"

greengoose: having no problem here. Maybe clear out your history and temp internet files might help. Could be a glitch with your ISP also. I think we may need to start a new thread here--this one's getting quite long.
Posts are taking 8-10 secs to refresh.

I'm ordering the 2 fans and case rails and screws now.
Choose a connection.
3 pin to motherboard or 4 pin to powersupply.
....I want powersupply ?
I ordered the case...I think.
They didn't ask for a credit card or method of payment. C.O.D. ya think ? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Memory here is best I found so far. http://www.computersonics.com/catalog/memory.htm
Bistro;
And they want $2 for that sheet of paper. Well, https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ don't need it now.
Q_O_H
Add up the figures and might want to make a phone call again, just incase as what happened to me the party failed to get one little item and they would not ship. So, double check. My suggestion only.

https://discussions.virtualdr.com/What a ningcompoop I am.
I went back to Allstar because it bothered me about them not asking for method of payment and checked the "status" of my order. 0
So I redid the order and this time they did ask for credit card. So now it is definitely ordered. I even printed my receipt. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Remind me to remind you to tell me which plug bistro so I can order those fans.
Train, Good idea. I don't want them to have any reason for holding up my order. I already called to be sure it was in stock(and just to make sure I really did order it this time https://discussions.virtualdr.com/)
[This message has been edited by Queen_of_Hearts (edited 01-11-2001).]
Quick! I gotta have my supper! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ You want the powersupply plugs (4 pin). Those motherboard plugs are for special purpose--the only fan plug you'll probably have on that mobo anyway is for the CPU heat sink/fan. See ya'll later on tonight.
Well, made my phone call and will pick up case with 300w power supply, motherboard saturday https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
