Night guys,
See yall in the morning.
Thank you.
I'm out for the count too I guess. Busy answering some of the other posts around here. Been a looooonnnnngggg day. See ya'!
I'm up !
Morning All https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Good morning, Queen_Of_Hearts...your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to build yourself a "dream machine" computer. As always, should you zap yourself, this forum will disavow all knowledge of you or your actions. This post will self-delete in 30 seconds....
Morning All, Nasty weather here, ice and such, staying at the house today. Nothing much has happened yet, I see.... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Pretty nasty here too greengoose !
No sleet yet. A little concerned about those flights out of Dallas....my UPS man said thats why my delivery is not here.
bistro,
I already am building my dream machine. Do that each night in my sleep.
I was perplexed about the cost of the RAM for this computer
compared to the 128MB prices we found for the new system.
Is that what sdtech was referring to here:
Originally posted by sdtech:
"hmmmmm....I see there are some questions about price of CPU's and RAM. Remember, if the item is no longer being manufactured,
(ie. 16Mb 72 pin EDO RAM) then its price will increase! Resellers must pay higher prices for dwindling supplies. They end up passing the price increases on to consumers. This may be the case for
Celeron CPU's. Most of them were in the 500 to 600MHz range."
snarfll also said in one of his posts that we should buy the best BRAND of Ram.
What's a good brand ?
Can't wait for the answers QoH. Good questions - now I don't have to ask them. Great. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Be Back.
If you get a mobo designed for ATA-66 and it takes PC-100 or 133, you're not going to have to worroy about buying the older RAM as sdtech mentioned. He's right though; folks who have older mobos (we're talking only a few years here) and want to upgrade their RAM, are seeing some price increases on the type of RAM they need. They got a choice; pay the extra bucks, or upgrade their mobo and buy the newer RAM--damned if they do, damned if they don't scenario.
As far as brand names, it's a toss-up--try PNY or Kingston; both good. Just make sure the sticks are exactly alike.
I had RAM on the brain and we were talking about adding to this one to make it faster. The link Train posted last night was for my present computer. Just was wondering why the RAM for this one was so much higher. Way higher for it than they are for the New one. I think I even need the 72 pin EDO. Then I remembered way back when sdtech posted that and went back to see.
(I had no idea what EDO meant at the time or that I would have it on this system)
Just rereading.... makes more sense now.
Well, if you're not in that much of a hurry to get the parts for a new one, then a RAM upgrade for your present system wouldn't be a bad idea--I think you'll see a vast improvement--64 mb ought to do it; an additional 32 or 64 would be night and day.
You may have already mentioned this in an earlier post, but how many RAM slots do you have on your mobo?
Reading "project" makes me wonder how many have built and what are their problems if any as they went along. Also how has some of the components we have talked about worked out in actual usage.
I am not going to do it now. But when the new one is finished it would help to get rid of a bunch of unnecessary stuff on here and add the RAM. Then just use it to surf and for email, IM ....that kind of stuff. (about all it's capable of)
No slots left. They are all 6 full. But take two pairs of the 8 out, and put back in two of 32.... or even just take out one pair of 8 and add one 32 with the 16 that remains would be 48 ? Twice as much as I have now.
Just an idea, now that I know what kind I need and how to do it.
This project is first. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Too close now to fritter away what I have stashed, on RAM .....or shoes. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Hmmm...well, when you get the new one built, you just run right out there and buy a new pair of "computer beige" shoes to match your new system--if anything, it'll make you feel better for the money you spent on it. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I already got that color, bistro. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I am not having withdrawal symptoms.....yet.
You're the one on medication !
Speaking of which, did you remember to take it today ? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Queen_of_Hearts
If you have a office depot near you, wander on in and take a look. They have EDO and SDRAM in the store here. They did not have the EDO 128 chips that someone is got to be making new and the prices on this type has gone down also. Not as big a drop on edo as has taken place on sdram. But encouraging none the less.

I do have an Office Depot and will check into that. AFTER this project. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I am reading about the installation...... Will the processor we choose come with the heatsink already attached to the processor ? Is that what the thermal paste on
our list is for ?
EDIT:
I see.... they want it on there even if it is clipped on ....to fill the gaps.
I'm talking to myself.....sorry.
[This message has been edited by Queen_of_Hearts (edited 12-13-2000).]
Was there not a statement about using the paste the second time not the first??
Any way that is how I interpeted it. So correction may be neccessary on my part https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Stand corrected.

Leave money in safe place [not on you] and walk in eyeball the darn things oggle price tags, sigh then leave. {I know rough to do} In that way you will have a idea of what is what.
Just a Idea on my part as I found empty pockets prevent hole burning. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Ok, Train good idea. I'll hide it in a shoe, then go look.
I'm still reading. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
About that thermal paste--it's not like it's "taboo" to put it on for the first go, but sometimes it's better to wait a while; to let the new processor "burn in". After a couple of weeks of running it, put the stuff on. Maybe stating the obvious here, but this applies to Socket 370 CPU's, not Slot I type.
The reason is obvious when you look at pics of the two; the Slot 1 out of the box has a "built-in" heat sink and fan on the casing, Socket 370 is just the chip. Depending on what you guys decide for a CPU, I'd get a bigger, better heatsink/fan combo for that chip than those cheapy kind you see hanging on those accessory racks at the shop.
bistro,
This is what I have on my list.
Motherboard Abit BX 133-RAID ( socket370-type)
Intel Pentium III 800mhz CPU
Is this processor one that will not have the heatsink attached ?
EDIT:
Configuring the Motherboard https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ . Please tell me it'll just be like the modem with tiny little black switches and all I'll have to do is just put it on the right numbers. Sounds like a much bigger ordeal.
This may make more sense when I see the actual thing in person.
[This message has been edited by Queen_of_Hearts (edited 12-13-2000).]
Yes Ma'am. That PIII 800 comes in either the 370 or Slot 1. You want the 370 chip for that mobo. Don't get a "standard" heat sink/fan cooler for that. Recommend one of the Global Win coolers like the FNP08Hor similar. It'll come with a small tube of thermal paste in the box.
Oueen of Hearts - Here's something I ran across. Click here
When you order it, do you tell them I dont wan't it with the heatsink/fan, and then get the one you suggested or let it come like it is then take it off and use FNP08H.
Oh good greengoose ! We'll need that! Got it bookmarked. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Don't touch that remote! That's right...it's Channel 7's Horror Theater! So prepare yourselves for tonight's spooky feature....Queen_Of_Hearts vs. Configuring The Motherboard!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!
Actually, there's very little "configuring" for mobos these days. (Ah, for those heady days of yesteryear when we had a couple dozen jumpers and DIP switches to puzzle through...*sigh*). There may be only one or two jumpers to switch around on that Abit mobo--but we'll get to that when we get to that, OK? Real simple stuff, don't worry.
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Whew! ok.... I won't worry now.
I realize this stuff is alot harder to read than it probably will be to do.
But this stuff is a whole lot clearer now, than it was when I tried to read it two weeks ago.
SSSSSHHHH! You just gave away a "techie" secret! Ok,..let's see...that's two demerits for Q_O-H_... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/Quote:

bistro
Have you had any dealings with gigabyte mb?

SMILE
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Yeah...I became "certifiable" years ago...
Train: No, not many run-ins, but they got a fairly good rep. Trend is that once you get hooked on one mobo, you tend to lean towards that particular make. Have used Soyos and older Abits.
"WhatInTheSamHillIsGoingOnWithThisGodForsakenComputer?C'monNowYouRottenPieceOfCrap!Work!"

https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Thought so.
https://discussions.virtualdr.com/Boinoz deeuz Mozaic,
Sorry my written Spanish is not the best.
I see you had a visitor on the 98 Board....you handled it well. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
'Fraid I'll have to go too. Had a rough one this afternoon. Took the wife in for a follow-up on the pnuemonia bout she's having. Doctor decided to admit her to the horse-spittle. Just as she was being admitted, the fire alarm went off--oh...hellloooo? Had to wheel her speedily clear down to the emergency room where they kept all the patients who couldn't tolerate the cold air outside---loads of fun to be had by all--turned out to be a small electrical fire in the basement.
Anyhoo, she's "OK"--not in grave condition--just needs rest/observation for a while and get some lab work done.
See ya' tomorrow.
Will start a new section tommorow. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
QoH - Checked and That was interesting. Handled extremely well. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

What a day, bistro.
They'll be able to watch her better there. Nothing to fool around with.

Had the side panel off of computer this evening and was looking things over and fired it up and asked. It has a Athlon 600 in it. Didnot do to bad for 53% resources.
At 79% now https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ and doing better. But darn it seem slower than my old compaq in some things.
Any particular problems hooking ATA 66 to a ATA 33 as a slave. Looking at a 20GB for this rig. But gots to check my powersupply Wattage output first.
Bed time so good night and take care.
