You would install the same model as the shared printer on the Win7Host. The main thing is to set it to print to LPT1.Quote:

Why is your VM in the OEMWorkgroup workgroup? I thought we established that the workgroup name is "workgroup".

no, oemworkgroup is the common workgroup here.
Let's try this:
- In XPMode's "Printers and Faxes":
- right-click the "Hp LaserJet P2035 (from ZESZUT)" (the second one down in your screenshot)
- click "Sharing..."
- click the "Sharing" tab
- select the "Share this Printer" option
- in the "Share name:" box, type in P2035
- click the "General" tab
- in the "Comment:" box, type in Share name: P2035
- then click OK.
- At a XPMode command prompt,
- type the following three commands, pressing [Enter] after each:
net use lpt1: /d /y
net use lpt1: \\virtual_xp\p2035 /persistent:yes
net view \\virtual_xp
and you should see P2035 under the "Share name" column with LPT1 in the "Used as" column to the right of that.- If you do, try printing something in your QBASIC program.
success!
i was able to run two programs and get output printed to the laserjet.
Nice. I thought I mentioned creating a local share and redirecting another printer to that local share before, but SpywareDr's instructions are more explicit :)

i'd LOVE to have two monitors, doc. but this pc has an onboard graphics card with only one output. *sigh*

as much as i'd like a second monitor, i really have no place to put one lol.
so far everything has been going pretty well. except ...
i cannot connect to the internet within xpvm. "intel 21140-based PCI fast ethernet adapter (generic)" is installed as the driver under network adapter. is there something else needs to be done?
I don't remember ever having to do anything. Once they get booted up for the first time I click Start > Control Panel > Windows Update and start downloading.
Do you see any yellow splats in Device Manager?
Are you sure it is set to Obtain IP automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically? I remember you were messing around with static IPs.

you and i were playing with it, midknyte. you had me set it to static IP address 10.1.10.200. should i change it to auto?
and the big question ... will this mess with my printing capabilities?
No, I said to use DHCP. I said you COULD use something like 10.1.10.200 for the IP, not DNS.
DNS is what allows you to get to the outside world, aka the Internet. Change that to auto.

bad news .... now that i changed the DNS to auto, my qbasic programs won't print :(
also, when i print a single word document to the laser printer, it prints pages and pages containing one or two lines of what look like control character printing.
You might try Google's free DNS servers:
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4
no change. internet ok. no qbasic printing. regular printing prints weird ascii symbols.
i went back and re-ran the following commands:
net use lpt1: /d /y
net use lpt1: \\virtual_xp\p2035 /persistent:yes
qbasic printing works now. *whew*
will check on regular printing.

still get control characters when printing from word in the vmxp.
however, as long as i can print from qbasic and access the net from the vmxp i'm happy. this is the important thing.
what little, if any, direct printing i would do from the vmxp i can alway copy and paste the file and print from 7.

Have you tried to re-install the printer software?
it's printing from word. re-install that?
Which printer are you using for each application?
Only use the LPT1 printer for qbasic. For other apps, use the regular printer (\\virtual_xp\p2035)
problem solved.
from what all we've done, i have 3 "printers" set up to refer to the laser jet in addition to the "qb printer" printer. by trial and error, setting each to default, i finally found one that works.

Unfortunately, that kind of stuff happens when you shoehorn legacy applications into current systems.

hi guys. i'm baaaaaaaaaaack. lol.
i'm trying to install 7 on the second xp machine here. i'm continuing this thread because i'll also be installing a vmxp here too.
upon trying to install 7, i get this error message:
"Windows Setup cannot find a location to store temporary installation files. To install Windows, make sure that a partition on your boot disk has at least 690 megabytes of free space. Error code 0x600704890."
the C drive on this machine has two partitions. one with 39 MB. the other with 295GB. the exact same partition sizes (it's the same dell optiplex 380) as the first.
any idea why the first machine's installation didn't balk and this one does?

Are you sure you chose the 295GB partition? Did you format the old 295GB partition?
The 39MB is probably the Dell Diagnostics.
it doesn't ask which partition. no i haven't formatted the 295GB partition.
it asks for language. then time & currency (which is set to english. go figure). then keyboard or input method (US). then i get the screen with the install now button.
i hit the install now button and immediately get that error message.
Clean install Custom advance and note the TIP below step 8.

Darik's Nuke and Boot. It's on UBCD. You can also use a bootable partition tool like Gparted (also on UBCD) or Minitool. Or plug the drive in as a slave on another system, then remove the partitions.
Basically, you'd delete all the partitions on the drive and run the Win7 installation. You can create a new boot partition during the setup.
i have the UBCD here at work. you'll have to guide me through how to do this, tho. sorry :(
