Every time I join a club I get in trouble...:D
and thanks for reminding me, nix......adblock.....had to remove it as it was blocking some vdr stuff and I couldn't get it to release it, so I deleted it....about 2 weeks ago........and that broken web page icon is always broken, no matter what site I go to. Other than these 'irksomes', it's been working well.
It's improved for me... only one crash this week. No ad blocking of any sort.
It's possible the ad code that was causing it has had it's run and is gone. I was never able to reproduce the problem which still makes me wonder if it's not a problem with the ad code and flashplayer 8. I think I still have 6 or so.
Looks like there's a potentially new problem:
I just opened up my beloved second home and started clicking on all the threads I wanted to view.
I think I had about 25 tabs at least open.
Anyway my WinMe system with 512MB ram and 768MB min swapfile almost froze and I looked at system resources and it said 0% !!!!!!!!!!
I started closing tabs and for each one I closed I gained 3% until I got back to about 82%.
I'll now log off and try closing Fx and see what happens when I come back in.
That's a known issue with 1.5 and some earlier versions too. Apparently open source programmers don't place that much importance on memory management. Thunderbird eats a lot of resource too. Fortunately I have it to spare.
Ok did all that and it got back up to 83% free.
Started Fx back up and got into VDr and opened 12 threads in tabs and my resources began draining away until they hit a low of 52%.
Just closed them all except for 1 and it's back up to 79%
Opened google in one, ebay in another and 10 threads at CTH forums and i onyl dropped to 70%.
Something weird going on.
Yes I've read about the huge memory usage issues, but why does it only start happening today and only with VDr ?Quote:

except I've got flashblock installed so just get a symbol not the ad.
Anyway it's 3am so I must be off as bed is calling me.
Have a good day y'all
JP you might be right about the flash block. As I stated previously, have had few problems up 'til yesterday, and now, no matter what page I try to go to, it crashes. So I added discussions vdr to the flashblock white list, and so far so good.....and VDR is the only site I go to that crashes FFox.Quote:

Thanks SpywareDr, I'm on my way, will report back.
Just so long as it's a busy flash movie. There has to be lots goin on so the script interpreter engine needs a lot of resource to run the script.
Don't know if this is any indication, but went thru the site SpywareDr posted (10 minutes), and watched alot of diff things and no problems with FFox.
Any busier flash movies to check, anyone?
Well with that msnbc page, or this page here, my FF never even gets to 40mb of resource. Only the 1 page open though, no other tabs.
No crashes with the msnbc page.
I'm going to leave flasblock on, and the VDr url in the flashblock white list and work Vdr for a while to see if it crashes.
Sure is a pia with my fave browser and fave site Vdr not getting along.
Has to be more goin' on than just FF 1.5 and VDR. I have that version and have loaded this site a slew of times, both when flash ads come up and when they don't, and I've yet to get a single crash. Has to be an issue with the code and a version of flashplayer
It's getting bad again the last few days. Nowhere near as bad as the first time, but still a crash or two a day.
Edit: Okay, 7 in a row just then. Not funny. :)
After almost no problems and very few crashes, FF has crashed 3 out of 4 times when visiting VDr, yesterday and today. Wonder if anything has changed here at VDr??
btw....this only happens when @ VDr....no other sites
Must be a new ad position running and more code issues with the flash player. Can you disable flash and see if it ceases? Thanks
JP
I had flashblock disabled for VDr and got a crash everytime I accessed the site, so now I just enabled flashblock again for this post and so far...no crash....now I will submit the answer and well see.
edit: hmmmm, no crash with flashblock enabled.
It's weird.
Well that lasted 4 minutes and it crashed. So for me it crashes with flashblock enabled or disabled....oh well.......but not as much when enabled.
It's not, it backs up what I theorized, that this isn't an issue with Firefox, but rather with a version of the Flash player and some coding done in some flash ad. I would wager if you went back to vers 6 or so of the flash player this might cease. I think that's the version I have loaded and I can't get FF to crash here.
Since it happens either enabled or disabled I uninstalled flashblock, and now will see if the crashes persist. It's more important for me to access VDr, with tabs, than to worry about flashblocking.
edit:...even with flashblock uninstalled, on some Vdr pages, FFox still says it's unable to open some flash ads,(??), just like it does with flashblock installed, and then FFox crashes.
So how does one uninstall macromedia flash and find an earlier version, or maybe this is a FFox glitch, and I should just wait it out......growing weary with this.... :(
I posted a link to older versions earlier in this thread somewhere. I would go back at least to version 6, but even 5 couldn't hurt. Can always upgrade again. I won't have 8 on my pc because they've bundled it with some yahoo junkware I don't want on my pc.

AFAIK that is a pickable option on the site.....but that is off the subject.....
Liam
Yeah that's what it says, but I definitely selected no, and I still found something from yahoo on my pc after it. I saw it in the close dialogue when I was shutting down my pc.
Well it's been about 6 hours, and no problems. Now I know Spyware Blaster's block on flash is supposed to effect IE only, but I disabled it and as I say...6 hours and counting.
The only variable is the ads that are always changing, and it could be the ones crashing me are out of rotation for a while.
FWIW... :D
Yeah, could be that.
I haven't had crashes for a while but I'm *** Censored to avoid displeasing advertisers *** which seems to workaround the problem.
Great Nix.....Yeah, 8 hours with no crash for me.....guess this is ...ermmm...ahemmm....a sensit$ve area....but without them there's no us ....
Hey poppy4 only 26 more posts until you join the Specialist ranks - woo hoo.
aww shucks....suppose now I'll have to shower and wash me clothes..... :D
oh well, the price one has to pay when joining a club I guess??....  :)
sssh....don't tell anyone, but I just want access to that 'secret' forum.....yeah man... ;)
I was fine on FF 1.1 and 1.5 was fine for a few days. Now 1.5 is seriously unfriendly, crashing almost any time I load a thread. Seems to run fine on general purpose browsing, though.
I just managed to crash IE on the vDr forums too. Hopefully I can post more tonight!
Okay, when I browse with IE here, it seems reasonably stable. So I dug around in the forums and found most (maybe all) of the ads.
Then I dug around with FF. I found two ads that I could never get to display... the IBM one and the Symantec one. They look pretty simple, just text. I looked at the code on those pages and I think I know what is causing the incompatibility. The ads are complete standalone XHTML strict, including header and everything. Two doctype declarations, two <HTML> tags, two titles, and I think the first <html> tag isn't even closed before the second one is invoked.
Code Excerpt (approximately 80% of the way down):
This must be what is causing the firefox 1.5 problems. I'm going to try to duplicate this with more controlled code to prove it. I hope we can fix it now, so I can go back to using firefox!Code:</div>

I was also able to crash IE, again, right after the top VirtualDr bar is displayed.
Well I upgraded to Fx 1.5.0.1 and truned off adblock and flashblock and restarted Fx and came to VDr and crashed within a minute.
Turned adblock and Flashblock back on and it was ok.
Today I have come here and notice some huge ad being displayed that is coming from ad.au.double*****.net (guess the missing word) and crash within 10 seconds, blocked that site in adblock and all working again.
So, not wanting to harp on blocking ads or suggesting that's what you should do, but it would seem again that some rebel ad is causing me the issues again.
It's this adhttps://discussions.virtualdr.com/im.../2006/02/1.gif
I see what you're referring to Professor, but that isn't present with the flash ads. However I have asked the ad dept. to ask the advertiser to remove the doctype and html/title tags. They shouldn't be there, we already have that covered.
