If you use trillian for instant messaging it shows you mail notifications in a pretty neat manner too. http://www.ceruleanstudios.comQuote:

Well you did say freeware.............. :D :D
Have to agree with erick_p,,boot up Trillian, open Yahoo/ M$N,or whatever and it pops up a bubble telling you you have mail and how many. Then just log on from there. And you don't have to have the chat programs installed. Just need an account name.Neat lil' program imo...;)
Pop Peeper instantly displays the message headers for every account on a single list, you can then delete messages based on the header, or read, and reply to messages from within the program. It is much better than e-prompter and other notification type programs I have tried.
I just gotta ask. I don't use MSN Messenger but my wife does. I think she uses version 6.4 but her version has those features. Am I missing something, maybe like bloating software or ??? MSN Messenger is free and is a part of windows 98SE.
I have been following these "tips" and am enjoying all of them. Keep 'em coming.
Favorite freeware site. Son of Spy's Freeware . Hundreds of freeware downloads, from apps to utilities.

well...probably a lot of other people said but
Zone Alarm http://download.com.com/3120-20-0.ht...search=+Go%21+
Regcleaner
Spyboot
and if u like cool walpapers for free check http://www.visualparadox.com very nice ones over there.
ICQ
Opera
can't think of anymore, but im sure is loads out there
Just hurriedly looked through your great recommendations but I did not see EndItAll. If you do a lot of Ctrl/Alt/Delete to close running apps individually, you'll love this 'un. It is free and there are to two versions. I prefer the older version but both can be found by using Google and type the name in.
I like these also,
1.( window washer v4.8) cleans up everything on your pc
2.(Kerio, ) free firewall
3.(Iconoid), hides your desktop icons
4.(adsgone), pop up stopper banner add blocker
5. (XPANTISPY) a must have
6.( blackvipers web page) , xp services to turn off in xp do goggle search for blackviper
7.the others already mentioned i use also = spybot, diskeeper, system mechanic, NAV 2003 pro, mailwasher, weatherbug, aida32, belarc advisor, iespell, and of course virtual doctor, and google toolbar... this isa good thread lots of info:)
This isn't exactly a "must have" for maintenance or security etc., but "i" sure wouldn't be without it. ;) I don't use screensavers they don't "save" anything as far as the monitor is concerned. And to me it's just fluff. But i "do" like to change my desktop wallpaper regularly to pics of my choice.
The best prog i've found to do this is Phyll's Wallpaper Switcher:
http://www.philippe.bedard.net/vieux_descr.html
Just use setup by right clicking the tray icon and choose how often you want it to change to another pic(in the designated folder)and it does this and also changes to new one when you reboot. If you get bored with current pic, just click the tray icon and it will switch to another. All you need do is create a pic folder wherever you want(i put mine in Program Files>Plus! on my Win9X machines). Then browse to it from setup and click it then ok out. No nags,no spyware and it's completely free. Phillippe Bedard is a French Canadian IT consultant and just made this and other free programs for people to enjoy...:)
List-FC is a right click menu option that lists a folder's contents to a folder.txt file on the desktop and opens it in Notepad.
The List-FC package contains a setup and uninstall file.
http://home.earthlink.net/~rmbox/Reticulated/Toys.html
It gives both the dos and windows names. Nice program, I use it to make lists of what are on cds or in certain folders.
Of coarse he has some other programs listed there also. ALL FREE TOO!

BTW, Train, that's a neat site.
HI philovance, I dont know about drive image but norton ghost and especially acronis true image can do this. My 13 GB of used hard disk is stored as a 4 GB image.Quote:
Hey mawil, with Drive Image, is the image the exact same size as your Hard Drive saving each and every file, or compress them, or does it just save settings? I'm curious because most Hard Drives today would have way too much information to fit onto one zip disc. Is this similiar to Window's own System Restore? [/B]
This type of imaging (whichever tool you use) is MUCH MORE than system restore. You can get closer to this style of backup by using the system restore AND the "File and transfer wizard" together but it is painful. System restore in windows only saves windows system info (including registry etc) nothing to do with apps or configuration.
My Acronis true image (which makes an image without booting and all that [*-deleted word-*]...takes a compressed image from within XP directly!) saves my OS exactly as it was on a certain day...
Driveimage is an exact duplicate of the drive being backed-up.
Default setting is high compression which in my case squeezes about 1.5 gigs down to less than 700 megs. You can choose to use less compression if you like but I've never done so.
It depends on what you have on the drive you're duplicating. If you have lots of media like jpgs or films then they won't be compressed much or at all since they are typically already as compressed as they can be. If you have mostly programs and documents then you will see a significant amount of space saved at max compression.
I save all my media on another drive or on CD to keep my main partition as small as possible.
Talking of Acronis true image if you live in the UK the pro version is free on this months PC PLUS DVD .
hehe ... if you say so ...Quote:

also i guess youve never compressed a folder tree (also ... just click on the extract button and it will uncompress the whole file ... but i guess thats just stupid)

Tabit (Guitar Tablature Program)
Tabit Website
I use Treepad Lite which is an information collector. Great for keeping stuff you otherwise would forget (links, stuff about software, etc.). I guess if you have to classify it, it's a database.
The company has many paid versions, but Treepad Lite is free. I supposed the paid versions have lots more nice things, but the free version is sufficient for my purposes.
Enjoy. :)
Here's another program that might interest our music buffs - it's called "Audio Crusher". Great little program for audio conversions.........
You can get it here;

Awesome thread you started here Webshark...makes for a few upcoming busy test weekends :D
Besides gazillions of great links above, many of them I use, here's my small contribution...
Otto's Print Screen (freeware)
... a very basic, yet highly useful tool to take quick snapshots of your screen or sections thereof and quickly print them, without loads of settings to make (puts two successive pics on one page by default...makes my office life soo much easier.
Mail Wiper.com is an app. that supposedly removes spam--if you can believe what the maker says. It isn't free but is "guaranteed".
A friend emailed me about this and I had to tell him I was doubtful but have any of you tried it?
I'll pass on him any comments I get. TIA
BTW, getting on the board and coming to this thread in one of my daily highlights now:)
I agree, maybe we need to make this a 'sticky' :cool:Quote:

With the response it's getting, I thought it was (Sticky) LOL...............
Don't laugh yet, I went to www.guinnessworldrecords.com and found this thread as the number one worlds record for having the most views and replies in a forum. I couldn't believe it...
The best little program I ever d/l for free is spybot search and destroy from http://security.kolla.de/ It keeps spys from taking over my system as well as a whole lot more. It's totally free and it just keeps getting better. The developer just keeps adding good stuff to it all the time.
Another good little free program spywareblaster from http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html it helps keep spyware from even loading.
I've got to be honest with you guys, I never expected such a response to this thread, but I'm glad to see that it's offering so much information to everyone out there! I think it's great when we can share info with others that can create solutions they may not have even known existed.
I, personally, have learned so much from the posts in this thread so far that I want to thank each and every person who has added to it. I'm glad it has helped to inform and perhaps entertain many people (I mean over 5,000 views, WOW!).
I'd like to add a couple of things:
1.) AdsGone is the best pop-up killer I've ever come across. You can have it block entire ad servers, block pop-ups by the title of the window (like the "Save Now" windows), and even temporarily disable it by holding down one button. It's free to try and I think $20 to buy.
2.) This isn't really a program, but if you want to do a FREE Online Virus Scan go to TrendMicro and you can scan your computer for viruses over the internet for free.
Thanks again everyone for adding to this thread. Excellent information!
I,m going to stick my neck out - probably get kicked off but what the heck. I have suggested this idea twice as an actual subject link, but was told that "The Boss' " said it wasn't a good idea. My thought was that there should be a spot that one could go to right away to find all these wonderful site the members offer up when we are asking for help, without having to post and then wait. If an answer wasn't there then by all means Post and Ask for Help. At least I have it bookmarked.
I almost missed it because I haven't been comming to VDr every day and when I do it is usually only to the WIN98 page. If i hadn't happened to look closely at the opening page at active topics well the rest is history.

Here are my favorites:
FireTrust's MailWasher Pro
FireTrust's Benign
PowerQuest's Drive Image
PowerQuest's Partition Magic
Raxco's PerfectDisk 2000 (Microsoft certified defrag s/w for W2K or XP
Panda's Platinum AV
Belarc (freeware) -- I've just discovered this program and it is great.
Programs that I Avoid Because Software doesn't play nice with other software:
Roxio's & Symantec's GoBack -- Takes over Master Boot Record
InaSoft's InaQuickRescue -- Takes over Master Boot Record
Any Symantec product
PowerQuest developed Second Chance (for Win 9.x systems), which performed the same functions as GoBack without using the Master Boot Record.
If you have GoBack or InaQuickRescue loaded on your system and you decide to use Partition Magic, your computer will crash and you are back to square one. Unfortunately, neither of these companies disclose this. In fact, their attitude is that users should uninstall (GoBack or InaQuickRescue), if they want to use Partition Magic. I find this attitude unacceptable. The software companies are taking shortcuts and the users be dammed.

Does anyone have any recommendations for programs that can help diagnose what is causing a "stop error", otherwise known as a "Blue Screen of Death (BSOD)."
I spent the last 8 months chasing a "Kernel Mode Trap Error" aka BSOD. This specific error can be caused by malfunctioning hardware, dlls, OS or application software. Since the error was occurring on a random basis, it was a bitch to finally figure out the cause.
Cheers,
Linda

Let me know.
While I'm typing, I should make another contribution to the thread.
I recently got into taking DVDs and compressing them into DivX files so they could fit on one or two CDs and you could watch them on your computer in almost DVD quality. I searched forever to find something that wasn't too difficult and still gave very good quality. If you're looking to get into this I recommend Vidomi. It can play and encode DVDs, and best of all IT'S FREE (or at least it was when I wrote this)!
Keep up the good work guys.
:D :D :D :D :D I was joking, sorry!!!:D :D :D But I'm sure it will be in a few days.
Well, maybe not in a few days. It says it takes up to 12 weeks for them to investigate a claim. If the thread is still going by then it just may be a world record!
We can all look on this "RECORD" as being an early April Fools Day joke!!
well guys lets go for it lol lets make it a record
roger wilco is a great program for chatting with players oline while playing a game it is real time chat and just uses a mic and speakers and doesnt interfere with the game

Wow, an amazing thread!
I enjoy freeware as well as the next guy too and have found some jewels I didnt know about in this thread.
Some contributions of mine I didnt see, or maybe missed:
MP3 Trim
Lets you trim mp3's, fade in, out, adjust volume, etc. Free version is limited to a certain size of file but it covers most MP3's. No intrusive install, just runs from the exe file.
AnalogX A few gems can be found there such as Script Defender, MaxMem, Capture. Have a look around the site.
Sys ID
Lots of info about a system from this small program that doesnt install or alter anything on your system.
AppSwat
An ultra small process terminator
And of course, the latest version of Kazaa Lite is great. I like being a K-Lite Master!
sorry i just thought of some more
I have recently gotten into website making alot and i wouldnt be anywhere without macromedia fireworks and Eyecandy
also Status Bar Javascript Magic it generate a .js file based on customizations u make to ur status bar
OK, topic pinned....
Now most of my faves have already been mentioned long ago but here's one that hasn't and it certainly qualifies as it sure is little:
Josh Madison's CONVERT
p.s. the length of this topic is nowhere near a record for V Dr but it's getting "up there" for the software forum. :)
html validator lite
ultraedit 32 .... not free but the best text editor out there
the is app is a must have to web designer and anyone creating presentations.
Snag it
http://www.techsmith.com/products/snagit/default.asp
Probably THE best editor/IDE for Java programing
JCreator
very handy indeed, integrated with Sun's SDK and the syntax library, there is a freeware version and a pro version available.
