The Elder Geek, I tried to use the Set Programs Access and Defaults, it did not work. I tried to use the Add/Remove, I could uncheck it, but it also did not work. As soon as you start Outlook Express it comes back. I have eliminated it the same way I did before, but I was expecting a Microsoft procedure to do it in SP1. I renamed the Messenger folder to MessengerOld and it does not come back and I have notice no ill effects. Thats the way I did it before.
Lotus and The Elder Geek, what method did you use to make your slipstream CD's. Did you go with the Microsft method or from the info from DRMDJ's link.
I'm signing up for Broadband can't bear my slow connection anymore.

OK, I just installed the service pack on two machines. So far no funny things happened. I do have a trusty NT 4.0 box, and several Win2K boxes to use in case they go belly up on me. The download was not bad after I finally got a solid connect to the server(s). It was just so hard to get a good connection though ( had to download at 03:00 AM to get the good connect too). I looked at the list of things that it fixes, and most of them should have been fixed on the initial release, they are simple things that should just work right out of the box.
I'll keep posting to let everyone know how things are going with my experience, at least.
Microsoft should do something about the lousy download for the pack because it is 133 MB large. Man that is a big Service pack for an OS, even though the SP for Win2k was 100 MB too. They just seem to be getting bigger and bigger each release.
Hi Philgo, myself i used DrMDJ's link, found it was easy enough to follow that i didn't need another...
I prefer to use "Disk-at-Once" not Track-at-Once" as told to do in the link, other than that i followed it exactly as written.

I used the info from DrMDJ's link as well. It was a smooth and easy process. No doubt you'll enjoy the broadband connection. I was fortunate enough to be in an area where RoadRunner first rolled out their service. It sure would be tough to go back to DUN again. :D

The main/only point of posting the link(s) I did for slimstreaming was that instructions are provided for producing a bootable, integrated winxp (or 2K) installation CD. MS' instructions show how to slipstream, but not creat oneself a cd.
Glad it worked for those who tried it.
PS. Using DOA vs TAO to burn is not important. Oh (in case anyone was wondering/concerned), the cd boot sector code (boot.bin) provided as part of a download in the link I gave is the legitimate code for an XP CD. A person could extract their own from their install cd using something like CDRWIN, but it isn't worth it. It's easier to just use the one provided (and pre-extracted) in the article.
Too lazy to check if this was mentioned before, but make sure you re-run bootvis after installing SP1. My boot time went from ~32sec to ~52sec after installing SP1.
Good point tironsi, as SPI install resets some things and jumbles up the file locations of files a previous run of bootvis might have altered.

Sorry to sound stupid, but what is bootvis, and where do you get it?. Did SP1 and boot up really slowed down, so any help will be appreciated

Just wanted to say, as an old fashioned dial up customer sometimes really dissatisfied with it, I just downloaded and installed the service pack in an less than an hour. Didn't even get disconnected, amazing. I don't think dial up users should be hesitant to install it. Just be patient!

I went to the update site and started the update about 8 PM and finished about 1:30 AM inclusive installation which itself took less than 10 mintes. The download was nightmare since I was disconnected so every 15 - 30 minutes. Sommetimes came a message that my ISP would disconnect in 2 minutes but more often the download (73MB) was abruptly disconnected. In this case also a message appeared where one could retry which I did (having the download window always open), and the download resumed without starting from the beginning. I can't count how many times this happened but it was at least a two dozen times.
Anyways, eventually I got finished.
M$ obviously doen't care about the fact that the vast majority of their Windows users are still dial-up which I can understand with these exorbitant broadband prices. I would not pay $50 or more for a good broadband connection (cable or whatever). It is simply not worth, keeping in mind that my dial-up works very well with a no-brand Winmodem ($12).
DesertFox: I spoke to soon last night! Didn't realize I still had to download and install Express. Started, got half way through, and Server went down! They were down for hours. This A.M. didn't have to work this A.M., so started at 7 A.M. Just got finished with the install. Hope everything works o.k. I agree with you on dialup situation. My server is really promoting their fast connection package and I swear they are neglecting dial up! I too cannot afford the $50. Also I have only been online since March with their dialup and got a second line installed for free but have 1 year commitment. But they still keep trying to sell me their dsl. I'm afraid dial up is a dying breed!
Yes, I had to mostly sit there. I got the error in server thing too. I will just keep my fingers crossed that everything works ok after this!
madc250, bootvis works for some and not for others. My boot time was 40 seconds before bootvis and 40 seconds after bootvis, others report a major speedup. I just don't see it.

I wish you good luck that all goes alright! I think dial-up is not yet a dying breed. The reason is the high cost and secondly the DSL net has not been so widely spred. Remember to get a DSL, one must not be more than 2 miles away from a "Central Office". I areas like mine that is difficult to achieve, or think of rural areas where the phone companies do not want to invest for DSL etc. etc. I also think that dial-up is good enough for the time being, if one like me has a good connection.
I just installed SP1. Total time start to finish, including D/L and installation was 50 minutes. Nothing in my computer appears to have changed. I actually had to right click My Computer to confirm that Service Pack 1 was actually installed (It was). All hardware, programs, file associations, etc, work just as before. If there was any change, the computer might be a little faster.
Based on my experience, I would not suggest anyone hold back on this important upgrade. After all, you're all going to have to do it sooner or later.

Since using xp I have had automatic downloads enabled and a number of patches/fixes whatever had been automatically downloaded successfully and touch wood no problems experienced. The comp. has in fact improved and runs faster.
In view of this I contacted microsoft to see if I required SP1 and below is the reply:

I had to reformat my HD 5 weeks ago. When I installed windows updates there were about 30. Service Pack 1 contains an awful lot more than 30 updates. If I was so current, why did it take 15 minutes to install the new SP 1 files?
I found a list of upgrades and fixes applied by SP1. It runs from Q82010 to Q32545. It includes 308 upgrades and fixes and prints on 13 pages. You never applied that many patches/fixes.
If you do not want to update your machine, that is your business. But, do not spread false information that might encourage other users to hide their head in the sand next to yours.
Better run Adaware after installing it as Microsoft puts its "Alexa" spyware back on your computer with SP1.

Having read some of the earlier posts, I dont know what all the fuss is about re MS releasing SP1. Yes those of us with DSL will download it quicker(!) than dial up users but come the end of the month, here in the UK at least -every PC magazine on the news stands will have SP1 on their "cover discs". So it will be freely available to all in eith CD Rom or DVD format.

The updates have run great, and I feel that anyone who has Xp, either on a new machine or clean upgrade will benefit from it. As far as Alexa, there was no spyware after upgrade.

Uninstalled XPSP1 due to many problems with it and did reinstall of IE6SP1 - immediately on reboot Adwatch nailed Alexa and traced directly to the SP1 install.
MS can stick XPSP1 where the sun don't shine! If it ain't broke - don't fix it. OR if you can't put out a non buggy OS - what makes you think you can put out a service pack that's not buggy, too.
XPSP1 screwed two separate XP machines at this household.
My congrats to those that are having no problems - but come back and repeat that sentiment in a few weeks.

I have yet to hear of software more complex than Hello, World that did not have bugs. It is virtually impossible to write perfect software, and it becomes increasingly harder when it is so complex as an OS. Just because the service pack may introduce new bugs, it does not mean that it is not better to apply it. You just have to weigh the benefits. That said, waiting until the SP has been tested by others is still a good idea. The bad thing about MS SP's is that they try to do so much at once, and that everything is interconnected, so if one thing breaks, who knows what else will.Quote:

I had a friend contact me about a message that the winxp sp1 would not install because he has an illegal copy of winxp pro. He had someone other then me install it for him and he is at a loss on what he should do. He is afraid that he will lose everything and he says he did not know that the install was illegal:confused

Do not disagree with your comments. My bone of contention is that an SP1 should improve the operational characteristics of XP, not make it more problematic. In my case, had a work-around for my Visioneer scanner 5300USB that worked in XP, but was prevented from working in SP1 - just not worth the $$$ to go buy another scanner IMHO, and functional programs in XP becoming unfunctionable w/SP1 - since other than some security patches (already downloaded from update) there isn't much to celebrate about in SP1 - and I'll be willing to bet good money that patches to repair SP1 patches will flood the MS update site. IE6 SP1 can be dld. separately - so far now will pass on the SP1 - when I have no choice, will bite the bullet - but not happily.

IMHO, your friend isn't missing anything. If he can still access the Win Update site, shouldn't be a problem. The SP1 isn't an essential download at this time and he would be better served to wait awhile before worrying about it.

Firstly Iam not spreading false information. What I have said is the reply and is the exact copy of the email I recieved from Microsoft.
Secondly I don't hide my head in the sand.
We're here to share information and experiences not to attack others for what they have said.
How do you know how many patches/fixes have been applied? I have just examined my downloads and it is a lot and I'm sure that if I printed the lot it would run into considerable pages. However, I'm not prepared to do that just to prove a point.

Speaking of changes done by SP1, am I hallucinating this, or is it no longer possible to minimize the Task Manager to the system tray so that it shows CPU usage there?
Must be a hallucination. It seems to be minimized (scratching the monitor to be sure it's not a Task Manager decal) and showing the usage here.
For TJolly and his allies, here is a list of fixes/patches applied by SP1. It is more than the sum of the previous updates. Anyone who has installed every windows update will still benefit by installing the service pack.

Apparently your friend has a pirated copy of XP. Microsoft is aware of several pirated CD keys, and SP1 will not install on those systems. Your friend will not lose any data.
