Just in case: the Promise card, while an excellent choice, has been known to conflict with some chipset drivers. If that happens, the Siig card is a good alternative (works vice-versa also).
YAAAAHOOOO
Got a WD 30GB 7200rpm HD.
Win98SE is installed.
Removed NIC and ATA100 cards. And used the cable select ribbon that was used by the old harddrive.
Added the compaq video drivers.
Works like a charm.
Jaak
I do not have AV in Bios.
Now the reason GG1 could install the Restore disk is the Bomid is on the CD instead of on the harddisk.
I could not and am happier for it.
WD works and two Maxtors I tried got tore up https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

GG1 will lose everything on the drive currently on the mobo controller when he connects it to the PCI card, unless it was jumpered to limit it to 32GB, OR...
OR... what I would do...
connect his second drive to the PCI,
move "32" on mobo connector to secondary mobo connector, and then, in BIOS, select to boot from SCSI (highpoint PCI controller).
then prepare the drive on highpoint
and use disk manufactor tools to clone/copy "old drive" system to "new drive"
disconnect "old drive", look if programs run as they did.
when satisfied that they do, keep the "old disk off the system until the time the BT comes along, where he can use "maxblast" to repartition it.
(maxblast for maxtors,,, ezdrive for western, EZdisk/ezdrive has a system copy/"clone" function... and they are westerns, aren't they?)
(the clone is not like ghost. it's a file copy system working in machine level)
I am thinking of a dangerous possibility.
the drivetool will see both drives.
if GG1 selects the wrong drive, it may zap it.
if I recall correct, the tool tells you which drive number... on which port...
the drive number should match the number fdisk /status reports
I hope this is sufficient warning.
I have to admit I am guessing here, because it's been a while I had to meddle with a machine with BIOS limited drivesizes.
So, if anyone comes along who cloned a system in this situation, PLEASE post.
(today I looked at jumper settings for a IBM hard drive. one can get into yet another situation, where BIOS misreads a drive.
16 heads is default, but some use 15 heads setting.
The IBM can be jumpered for these BIOSes with 15 heads default...)
I've also come to the conclusion that in my modern machines (ata 66 and ata 100) my drives are best set to cable select.
the reason?
I do a lot of drive swapping...
The removable rack is currently single on the cable, but that can change too.
I learned of a new feature on hard disks.
It has to do with spin up at cold boot.
I wish DrMDJ would interpret the description I found.
I was told a similar thing about modern SCSI systems.
the drives can be set to spin up when POST has already finished, and the SCSI card initialises, which distributes the PEAK loads over time.
I'll look into this.
I hope others can too, as it looks interesting.

In this picture....the quality is not that good but you can see that the area around the hsf is completely clear....I also made my own rounded ide and floppy cables. to help increase the airflow.

Train, mine is actually the big brother of the one you linked to... the only real differences are mine is a little taller I believe and it also has 2 cooling fans in the rear instead of 1 http://www.thetechzone.com/reviews/c...30/index.shtml
I am very satisfied with everything about this case...alot of room to work with and also very easy to hide all the wiring and keep everything nice and tidy....and the most important thing with the 2 extra case fans the whole system is about 10 degrees celcius cooler than what it was in the temporary case I had. I might go for a little overclocking but I don't know yet 1.2 ghz is pretty fast why take a chance on cooking the cpu just because I can?

Hi Sarkazztic, Good going. Like your specs. Read up on Antec links. May have to try one of those on my next build. I'm curious about differences between the In Win and Antec Cases. Would like to try a Lian also.
Jaak, I have been following your posts carefully on the 32GB hard drive barrier issue. What is really scary I'm following what you are saying rather easily. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ I was going to have Daizy send me some of her favorites this weekend but am still reviewing yours.
Train and I tried some data transmission ideas out last night as well as audio. As A result I came up with an idea and it is just and idea that I am going to email to the members that post on this thread to see what you think of it in the next couple of days. I just want to see if you think its a viable idea. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Hey, Greengoose,
that's two guys who do not need a dictionary... the publishers will soon go bust. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
just be careful when you decide to get a PCI card with highpoint hard disk controller to be able to use full capacity of your 40 giga drives in that compaq.
you may even want to do a "system only" restore to the 40 on highpoint, while the "32 limited" is totally absent from system (disconnected).
And when that's done, connect "32" to secondary, boot from highpoint (to verify what you are booting from...)
And then, from real mode DOS, ghost the thing over, PARTITION TO PARTITION.
NOT drive to drive.
many motherboards come with ghost.
The epox did
I gotta check mail?
you sending me your surplus dictionaries?

sarrkazztic,
Great machine you got there.... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
I am curious about something, though. You mentioned making "rounded" IDE and Floppy cables. Could you elaborate on that? I sure would like to get my cables in order. They are all over the place in my new build. Thanks.
Also does anybody know what the shortest IDE and Floppy cable they make is? Mine are much longer than they need to be.

Hi All, A bit under the weather and stayed home today. Feel better now.
Sarkazztic, We started back up with a Weekly Subject thread but didn't look like to much interest and it drifted off into the sunset.
We worked our way through Chipsets and Contollers in a herky jerky way. So if ya'all want we could start on cards and such that plug into the MOBO. Or we could cover whatever subject you wanted. Talking about the various components or anything else for that matter can help both the experirnced and inexperienced on this forum. We know from experience now everyone has something they can add to a subject that is being talked about.
Have not recived any components that I've ordered for BT yet, but even with the mail disruption something ought to show up this week i would think.
One thing I've noticed is the fact more people are posting about the computers they are building. Also asking questions. Seems like there is always a question being asked that I don't know the answer to. As a result theses forums become a continuing learning vehicle.
Need to start a new thread. Be back.
