DrMDJ mentioned something interesting there. A local shop here was having a sale on InWin cases, so I checked it out. (The ad didn't mention the model). Turns out they were A500's (with the ps installed vertically--yuuuch!) AND they were NOT the factory installed ps's (very low wattage). No wonder they were so cheap. Gotta watch it.

Thanks Bistro. The case will be an Inwin ATX S-500 series/300W PS. Probably order that tonight. With the time and expense to run over to the metroplex, I think I am farther ahead money wise to order off the net and there have been enough goods links from you all to accomplish that and get a good price to boot.

You had a negative reaction to the p/s being installed verticallly instead of horizontally what is your reasoning behind this....is it an airflow issue or that vertical p/s takes up more room for the hands to get in?? curious

Like I said, even the S-500 can have different or non-factory installed PSes. It never hurts to check.

On that particular case (A500 with the vertical ps), the ps was right over the CPU with barely enough room to put a standard heatsink/fan. If one was overclocking and wanted a slightly larger cooler, no joy. True, the ps intake pulled air off the CPU area, but not really enough to make much difference. Just gets in the way of doing much work around the CPU area---cuts down on air flow. I see no advantage whatsoever with a vertical mount ps. ATX mobo>then ATX case>then ATX power supply. Gotta match them up. If the ps comes with the case, you're OK. If ordering it separately, match it up. The ps will have the right power connector.

GG1, If I had my way, i would have started the build yesterday, but funds are the issue at the moment. Currently, am content with being a part of this. Have learned a lot but have tons more to learn. Slowly picking out the parts I want to use as I go along. Primarily from recommendations and tips from here.. Thanks for asking. My hope is that when I am ready to make the jump, it will go smoothly, what with all this assistance.

GG1, I didn’t suggest a P4 I wouldn’t touch one, they are far too expensive. Consider an Athlon 1.2 with a nice DDR mobo, I have an Epox-8K7A+ with 256 megs of crucial 2100 DDR and I am extremely happy with it.

Another option is that it "has" a connector for the P-4 if you so desire. The Enermax is a bit spendy,(us$65.00 at Plycon),but "i" think it's worthwhile considering it's a main link in a system. No, not anymore - prices just dropped on P4s here this week, up to 43% cuts. A P4 1.5 MHz is now cheaper than a P3 866 MHz here.

Gotta be hard for retailers to sell the stuff still in stock.
They don't have an easy life... which explains why Mom & Pop stores will seldom have a large stock of CPU and RAM.
I still prefer going to retailer, though.
It's easy to say that, since I know of at least 18 retailers within 5 miles.
Dammit, I need a piii @fsb 100 and it looks like its going to be hard to find one.

RIMM prices have dropped considerably too.
however, I haven't yet made sums for a lower end p4 system.
As an aside; I'll never again buy the highest available CPU. I haven't done so ever since a 486DX-50 bus speed "fiasco" of way back when. But "The Reason" isn't bus speed... It's the price premium on higher clocked CPU. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Anyway, I haven't actively looked for "issues" on P4 mobo either.
What I have looked for was "issues" with certain chipsets and mobo for athlon/duron.
One of the issues I read about is about suspend/wake/ACPI feature in boards with AMD north/via south. Ermmm, I do not use this feature, so I haven't saved the link... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
another issue was voltage control being about ten percent off in an otherwise good mobo (which caused instability, but it could be set to a lower Vcore voltage)
Another mobo brand has same Vcore issue, but it is stable, even when voltage can't be corrected DOWNWARD.
all in all, my humble old Iwill-VD133 (a rather early VIA/via chipset) with piii EB600 is still the more versatile and stable of all systems I have.
Being so old, it does require the USB filter, tho.
I haven't had the pleasure of looking at other than VIA/via and AMD/via chipsets for AMD CPU boards
(all of them newer than my I-Will for Pentium)

Well, it looks like because of the market prices coming down that maybe I could do better on a MOBO than the Abit 133BX Raid. Two things make me rethink this. The prices coming down and the changes since last Oct.
Then of course you all have good recommendations that I'm looking at. Those last two posts of yours Jaak triggered this off.

When Train built JR he went AMD and got case, MOBO, and CPU for $200. And that was a few months ago. It takes longer this way but I thank my lucky stars you all are in on this. I would never make it by myself and do as good a job as we seem to be doing.
T-Bolt, This is why not to get in a rush. Building a computer properly is a major project not just grab a few components and throw them together. Try waiting ten months to start one. Talking with a bud of mine here. He's tried VIA chipsets with AMD and had problems. As soon as he switched to an I-Will board, everything was stable. As said before, it appears the SIS chipsets work better with AMD. I.E.: SIS 735 and the forthcoming 740.
