Yep...I was wrong. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ Lady, from all my searching, what you got thar' is an ollllld propietary CD-ROM. Consider upgrading it? A Kenwood or Sony, perhaps?
Take a looksee under Msconfig, go to your Config.sys tab--do you see a line like this?:
DEVICE=C:\MTM\MTMCDAI.SYS /D:MTMIDE01
If so, and it's unchecked, check it. Reboot. We're shooting in the dark here now...
Otherwise, it's upgrade time---that new system is worth it.

No line like that
Only
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEN.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\setver.exe
What if I take it completely out of the Device Manager, shut down then reboot without it... then shut down and hook it back up. Will it pick it up again ? and install it's own drivers again ?
another shot in the dark?

Just remove the device, shut down, reboot and see what happens--never know. However, that's an oldie and Windows may not even recognize it. Searched for a "susbstitute" driver"--still no joy.

Very good. Try it out now...is it reading files? Shows up in My Computer, Explorer?
-
yep! Works ! and shows up in both and in the Device Manager with no !

Great! just a glitch in the installation. Would still consider an upgrade though. But at least now you can install programs/games from CDs.
I think it's just a tidge past my bedtime...Eastern Standard Time here, ya know...
I'll write up a post on that tweak program and the proper settings for ya'll for that GeForce2.
QoH: Proud of you too--you did it, girl!!! https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Thanks Mosaic. I tried it on this old thing and it worked. I have the other one about the cascading Control Panel already on the new one too. Lazy ain't I ? https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Well...I ran the sfc and found a couple of files needing replaced. My CD player couldn't find them. It shows files on CD's but when asked to read them it won't do it. So it's a new one tomorrow. I'll get a good one. You're right bistro...this one deserves the good stuff. Might need some new speakers too. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Morning All, Another night of moving forward. Looks like all the Queen of Hearts needs to do is tweak and peak with lots of playing. Great. Later. Be Well. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/

Good idea, Mosaic1. https://discussions.virtualdr.com/ We'll get her to do that, if we can slow her down a little... https://discussions.virtualdr.com/
Think I have the Reg hack to point the system to always look for the cab files on the hard drive rather than the Win CD--do you have it handy?
Still need to know from QoH:
Is the sound card working correctly?
TweakUI: Installed? There's some adjustments in there that'll speed up performance. (Later, we can switch that to XQET-Setup, but that's a bit more involved).
DUN: may be messed up. Will check when ready to install the modem.
Monitor: driver installed? Monitor Tab in Display Properties showing up?
Did you play the 3DMark demo? Watcha think?
Need to install as a minimum: Antivirus, firewall.
Put just the basic programs you need on the system---no need to put everything you own if you don't use it very often (even if you have the space for it.) Sometimes I'll install the program, use it for a few days, then uninstall it if I know it won't be of use for a while. Keeps the hd uncluttered.
Games: If you're going to put a CD game on the system, you now have the room to do a Full install...recommended. The game will still need the CD in place, but it will access the faster hard drive more often rather than the slower CD-ROM. As soon as you are finished with the game, uninstall it. No need to keep it on.
Once you have the basic stuff installed on the hd, do a scandisk and defrag. Do a Thorough scandisk rather than the standard. This will take a while, but it will be worth it. Then you shouldn't have to do one for quite a while--just the standard scandisk.
Still working on that vid card tweak. Will post it later today for everybody's benefit.
Readers beware: the program and the settings are for Nvidia-chipset vid cards only.
