I had an interesting experience along that line. I was given a very small photo of myself, my wife, and our children taken 25 years ago. I wanted to use it as wallpaper on my desktop. Scanning it at a normal resolution level gave me boxes of color in place of pixels of the same color when I blew it up to screen size.
