I don't use active iso burner, but did you try burning at 4x instead?
If you have an extra flash drive, you could try loading the iso there and then booting from that. Be aware that the flash drive will get wiped out when you write the iso to it.

i moved the ISO file to a flash drive. put it in the vista machine. booted up. it ignored the flash drive.
so, i went into the bios and found the "bootable" options. usb was last on the list and i could not figure out how to reorder the list so i disabled all of the other options.
so, now i get the message "a bootable device has not been detected". the loading stops. i can't get back into the bios at all. have i screwed myself?

Did you use the Rufus app to install the .iso onto the flash drive? You can't just copy the file to a flash drive. That's why I posted the link.Quote:

i used rufus. still no change in the error message.
hitting f2 (bios) or f10 (load menu) is ignored on startup now. i get the messsage:
"a bootable device has not been detected. please refer to the product guide at http://support.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop".

When you used Rufus, you made sure to add the Win10.iso file, right?

To create a bootable flash drive from an .iso file:
Run rufus-###.exe
Use the following parameters:
Device = verify that the correct flash drive is selected
Partition scheme and target system type = MBR partition scheme for BIOS or UEFI computers
File system = FAT32 for drives less than 4GB OR NTFS for drives larger than 4GB
Cluster size = 4096 bytes (Default)
New volume label = You can either keep the current label or rename the drive
Format Options:
Uncheck "Check device for bad blocks"
Check "Quick format"
Check "Create a bootable disk using ISO Image"
Click the CD icon button, browse to your .iso file, and click Open
Check "Create extended label and icon files"
Click the Start button
Click OK
Click Close

yes, this is what i did the first time. i repeated this and got the same result. :(
Hmm. You could try installing a known good boot disc onto your flash drive and see if that works.
Isn't there like an F12 one time boot menu option? You shouldn't have to disable all other devices. You couldn't use the + and - keys to move USB up the list?
If that is a MSI motherboard, the F11 calls up the one time boot menu.
And use the USB device line that does not have the EUFI in it.
i have the vista dvd that came with the machine in question. i copies it to the flash drive. no difference.
i also tried F2, F10 & F11 on startup. no difference.
and i'm sorry about disabling the other devices, too. but i thought that would be the only way to force it to boot to the usb :(
Can you test the bootable flash drive on another computer? If the flash drive boots, we would know that Rufus created it properly.
You could also check if there is a BIOS update for your Vista system.
i only have the windows 8.1 pc that i'm writing on now. how would i "test" the bootable usb without damaging this pc?
i'm not sure what you mean by a "bios upgrade". something i could put on the usb? i did see a "Gateway BIOS Gateway FX7024 Free Driver Download" at http://download.driverguide.com/driv.../d1730539.html. is this something i could put on the usb?
You would just boot from it. It wouldn't damage anything. You're not actually running the setup; you just want to see if it boots.Quote:

I can't see that site right now, due to content blocking. It depends on how old the BIOS update is. The older ones would have been on a floppy or bootable CD. You'd have to see if there is any documentation.
