It's your call on UBCD5. I would still make it, just to have it handy. I'm not sure what risks you mean. If you just run diags, it shouldn't be a problem.

I don't think you need to run SFC, but you'd need to have a slipstreamed XP SP3 CD. I'm not sure if that will work for an HP Recovery disc, though. You can read more about that, if you really want to run SFC.

You should look at your current configuration first. Many times, you'd have 2 512MB sticks instead of 1 1024MB stick. This is especially true of dual channel configurations. So you'd probably have to buy a 2GB kit (2 1024MB sticks).

I had just created an Avira AV bootable flashdrive the other day for running in a friend's badly infected system. It worked great, BTW. But trying to change the boot order in this BIOS so I can run the Avira on the laptop isn't taking for some reason. The USB shows up as SanDisk right under the Fujitsu HD when I expand that line in the current boot sequence, but when I select it and press F10 to save the changes to the configuration and exit, the system still boots into XP.

Any idea what I may be doing wrong?

On some laptops, you have to press Fn+PrtScrn.

Are you sure that laptop supports USB boot? You can try using the one-time-boot menu if that model has it. I think it was F12.

I'd like to perform a memory test on the two old 512k sticks of PC2700 DDR RAM currently in the 2 available slots on this laptop...the person who sold me the laptop can't remember if they're the 2 that originally came with the system, so before I invest in 2 Crucial 1GB to max out the RAM, I'd like to run a memtest to see if I'm getting all that I should be out of 1GB total. Any ideas which I should use? Are their free apps for such a test?

I went to the download site for UBCD (www.soft-disc.com) and clicked download, to be met with a screen that says Free_Download_Setup.exe, Free software, uninstaller included...do you wish to download this file now.

Something is telling me that this is not what I'm supposed to do. Shouldn't I be taken to a site from which I can download the UBCD .iso file for burning to a CD or DVD?

That's the wrong link. Are you using an adblocker or not? It sounds like you clicked on an ad.

I used the download link above and saved to my desktop, getting ubcd533.iso and ubcd533.isopart during the download, which are now morphed into one file, ubcd533.iso, that is 55.3 MB. Did I correctly download the .iso file, because I don't know why it was downloading in 2 parts and now is joined into one...maybe it's not important to know why.

So now I insert a blank CD/DVD into my drive and right-click on the above file, selecting imgburn, and let it run to completion?

That's way too small. My UBCD file is 592MB. What browser are you using? When I click on the link, it says the file is 592MB.

The .part file is normal. It will disappear once the download is completed.

Once you get the .iso, you can use imgburn:

I used Firefox on the laptop, but in the name of time, I'll re-download using the latest IE version on my awesome Dell XPS desktop, and then burn from there...then I'll restart my laptop with the ubcd in the drive and start the testing.

So I burned the 592 MB UBCD .iso to a blank DVD (Roxio was used) and then inserted the DVD into the laptop, booted and was taken to the main screen exactly as seen in the tutorial. I scrolled down to MEMORY, pressed ENTER, and here's what I have:

AleGr MEMTEST V2.00

Windows Memory Diagnostic V0.4

And nothing else is happening...

I figured I should probably press ENTER, but that just takes me back to the opening screen.

How to proceed?

If you didn't select and app, it would take you back to the previous directory. Notice that .. is selected by default, as in the cd .. command.

I usually run Memtest86+ V5.01. Choose the program and let it run. I usually do 2-3 complete passes.

Scroll or arrow down to memtest86+ v5.01 and hit enter.

Midknyte and Train...my bad, I forgot to scroll, but good news is that I ran the test you both recommended to run, two passes, and it came up without errors. I have to remember that this is a Pentium M processor, 1.73 Ghz., and it ain't gonna zoom.

I'll post copies of my programs as listed in Control Panel...as usual, a lot of the HP stuff is bloatware, in addition to a lot more, I'd wager...so they also slow the system down even more! I'll gladly uninstall a lot of the chaff after I figure out how to take a picture of the screen so I can save it into jpeg format in Paint and then upload it here. Any idea what key puts info on my Clipboard, because it sure ain't PrtScn-SysRq : )

Morning Train...

I tried both your advice and that reading from the tutorial and neither method is working, so there might be something wrong with this HP laptop keyboard?! Been using the PrtScnSysRq key in combo with Paint for years no matter what system I'm using, and this is the first one that's balked! When I open Paint and choose Edit-->, the only selections in the submenu that are even available are Select All and Paste From...everything else is greyed out.
