Go into 7 and set the permissions under sharing.
set which permissions? the printer is already shared.
there must be some other "sharing" setting on the vm xp that was skipped in those instructions.
all the machines here can see each other and they all (including the vm xp) have the same workgroup. yet the vm xp does not show up in anyone's network. except SOMETIMES the 7 but, as mentioned before, when I click on it I get and error message anyway.
i have noticed that the workgroup on the vmxp keeps reverting to MSHOME rather than the correct group. *sigh*
Hmm. The Howtogeek guide does a really good job. Turning off Password Protected Sharing was a key for me in the past.
MSHOME? This is XP Pro, right?
ya, it says xp pro. i'm convinced it's some "share" setting on xp.
i still have "virtual pc integration device" as a yellow question mark in my device manager. could this be the problem?
Did you install the Integration Services or not? I might have missed it, but I didn't see you confirm that.
It's weird because MSHOME is the default group for XP Home, not Pro.
it was already installed per se. when i clicked on TOOLS is gave me the option to disable.
i just now disabled and then enabled it.
as for the workgroup, when i go to COMPUTER NAME it shows up correctly but if i go to SET UP NETWORK, it shows as MSHOME.
If it says WORKGROUP in the System Properties, then leave it alone. You would click the Change button in order to change workgroups.
The yellow ? is normal for the virtual pc integration device:

[Explanation]
Under Other devices in Device Manager, you see that several Virtual PC Integration Devices items are displayed together with yellow question marks. This behavior is expected. You can verify that the devices are working correctly by viewing device properties in Device Manager.
ok.
i just followed the instructions on the JMU page and installed the printer as a local printer in the xp vm. printer icon shows up, as default and it shows if i open a text file and print. however, nothing prints and i get a warning from windows that "the document fails to print". additionally i get an error in the print queue.
got to be that interface between xp and 7 is not open.
so you installed as a local printer and created a tcpip port to \\hostname\printername?
can you ping the host from the xp vm?
can you map drive letter on the xp vm to a shared folder on the Win7 host?
so you installed as a local printer and created a tcpip port to \\hostname\printername? - it seems so tho i can't print to it without errors.
can you ping the host from the xp vm? - don't know how to do this.
can you map drive letter on the xp vm to a shared folder on the Win7 host? - i can't see any other pc's from the xp vm.
should we give up and re-install xp vm?
What are the names of the Win7 host and shared printer? It might be easier for you if I use the actual names.
hostname = Win7 computer name
printername = Printer share name
Ping is a basic network test command. You have to open a command prompt and type ping hostname
Start - Run - cmd
ping hostname
You should see 4 lines like this if it is successful:
Reply from 192.168.1.20: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=128
If you can't even get a successful ping, then there is a problem with your network settings.
Do you have any firewalls enabled on either system? If so, disable them for now.
And you're sure you shared the printer on the Win7 host? On the XPVM, go to Start - Run and type in \\hostnameQuote:
so you installed as a local printer and created a tcpip port to \\hostname\printername? - it seems so tho i can't print to it without errors.
That should open up a folder showing the resources on the Win7 host. You should see the printername listed. If you double-click on printername, it should try to install as a network printer on the XPVM.
Once we can confirm the printershare, you'd install the printer as local with the LPT1 port (No TCPIP port). We will run NET USE to set the LPT1 to \\hostname\printername for your qbasic.
I don't see how reinstalling the VM is going to help. You need to do some basic network setup, even if you do a reinstall.
hostname = ZESZUT
printername = ZESZUTLASERJET
pinging ZESZUT does give me those 4 reply lines.
i turned both firewalls off and typed "\\ZESZUT" in the run command on the xp. it tells me "the network path was not found".
i get this same message on the other machines here. but when they go to network places, they DO find ZESZUT.
